STANLEY HUMPHRIES SECONDARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER JANUARY 23, 2018

Parents / Guardians and Community Members,

Perhaps a little late but … Happy New Year!! Although winter still reminds us that we live in Canada and we can expect snow to continue to fall for some time to come … the days are getting longer and we’re seeing a little more sunshine too! Staff and students at SHSS continue to connect with their community through acts of kindness and giving, as demonstrated prior to the Christmas break and last week’s Fine Arts Performances (thanks Ms. Clark for all the amazing preparations!!). This fall Ms. McKay’s Family Studies 12 class completed a formal research project on the impacts of cell phones in the classroom. They presented this research and their recommendations to our staff and as outlined below, we are implementing a plan to support learning at SHSS starting semester 2. Our staff and students really do lead, achieve and succeed. With semester one quickly winding down, staff and students are wrapping up projects and course work in anticipation of term three and semester two getting started on Monday, January 29th. There are number of important dates and timelines for all students related to semester turn-around, the provincial exam sessions and several important dates specific to our grads. Please take a minute to review this important information. Once semester 2 is underway, it won’t be long before we begin the processes related to course selection! Please keep an eye out for that info. On behalf of the staff and students at SHSS, I wish our parents / guardians and community all the best in 2018! Principal D

Student-Led SHSS Cell Phone Policy (Introduced Semester 2, January 2018)

Ms. McKay’s Family Studies 12 class researched the impact of cell

phones on student learning. They read current research outlining the

pros and cons of having cell phones in schools and then prepared a

summary of their results, along with options for a cell phone policy at

SHSS. Finally, the students analyzed the options and developed a made-

for-SHSS cell phone policy.

Current education research shows that when students do not have cell

phones in school test scores improve, students are able to pay attention

in class better, students communicate with other students more, and

bullying decreases. All students, even the ones who do not bring cell

phones to school, realize the benefits of not having cell phones in

school. In short, removal of cell phones from school equates to adding a

full week of instruction to the school year.

Many schools in our province and country have

decided to completely eliminate cell phones from the

building to realize the above benefits. Upon evaluating

current cell phone research our students believe that

since cell phones are a part of our society, it is

important that students, staff, and parents, learn how

best to use this growing technology. Students used this

guiding principle to develop a plan for SHSS that includes teacher

monitoring of cell phones, education of parents, students and staff in

appropriate cell phone use in a learning environment, and consistent

consequences for students who violate the policy.

Following is our student-created cell phone policy at SHSS:

Cell phone daycare:

All classroom teachers will have a wall hanging spot in their

classroom where students who bring cell phones to class are

expected to place their phones during instruction time.

Students who do not want to put their phones in the case are

expected to not bring their phones to class.

Education:

Parents

Please limit/reduce texting or calling your student during class

time.

If you have an emergency situation and need to speak with

your student, please call the office, as we will also be able to

support your child initially.

Students and teachers

Cell phones are new technology for everyone. School is the

place for all of us to learn. Information regarding how to use

phones as learning tools will be provided by your teacher.

Consistent Consequences

1st policy violation – phone must be given to the teacher

2nd policy violation – phone goes to the office and student

picks it up at the end of the day

3rd policy violation – phone goes to the office and phone

privileges at school are removed

Thank you to Ms. McKay’s Family Studies 12 class for taking on this

valuable project!

Small town, big thinking! Teens at Stanley Humphries, bolster generosity and confidence through classroom-led do-gooding.

For the past four years, educator Tracy Kuiper has looked to

WE Schools programming to help guide the Leadership class

at Stanley Humphries to think beyond the town’s limits—

literally

speaking. An

annual trip to the province’s mecca makes this learning even

more tangible.

Every fall, the class travels to Vancouver for WE Day—a day

in the Rogers Arena featuring celebrity performers the likes

of Shawn Hook, sandwiched between an impressive list of

international speakers.

After a full day inside the stadium, Tracy and her

students leave the venue and head straight to The

Salvation Army Belkin House, a place where

Vancouver’s homeless can find assistance and

rehabilitation with the goal of self-sufficiency.

Radiating inclusiveness, the atmosphere here is shaped

by an

understanding that each student has special skills. Under the

guidance of Tracy Kuiper, they are invited to use these talents

in ways that boosts their self-confidence and encourages

further participation—motivation and collaboration among

students transpires naturally.

On January 18, the SHSS fine art students shared their many talents. Over 200 people enjoyed

the choir, jazz band and concert band. Funds were raised through a silent auction which will

support the Spring Band Trip.
