The Customary Units of Capacity/Volume

• Now, you will review below the unit conversions in the customary system of capacity measurement.

• For example, 1 pint of water is equal to 2 cups of water. Likewise, 16 cups of water is equal to 1 gallon of water.

• 1 cup (c) = 8 ounces (oz)• 1 pint (pt) = 2 cups (c)• 1 pint (pt) = 16 ounces (oz)• 1 quart (qt) = 2 pints (pt)• 1 quart (qt) = 4 cups (c)• 1 quart (qt) = 32 ounces (oz)• 1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts (qt)• 1 gallon (gal) = 8 pints (pt)• 1 gallon (gal) = 16 cups (c)• 1 gallon (gal) = 128 ounces (oz)

Using “Proportions”• There is an easy way to convert. It is called

“proportions.”• For example: Convert 3 gallons of water to quarts. • Solution: You will simply make the following

“proportions equation.”• 3 gallons = 1 gallon X 4 quarts• First, write the given measurement in the numerator

of the fraction. In the denominator, write X for the unknown. Then, write an equals sign. After that, write the given conversion. You must write gallons on top, because the numerators must have the same units. Now, you have set up your proportions equation, which is ready for you to solve.

How to Solve Proportions Equation

Lastly, you will solve the proportions equation you set up.

To do this, simply “cross multiply,” which means for you to multiply the numbers in an X formation, like below. After multiplying the numbers, set them equal to each other.

3(4) = X(1)Now, use algebra to solve for X, which will
