President’s Message

November

On Sunday December 1 was our Jingle Bell Ball with caller Frank Lescrinier and cuer Jim Elder. Thank you to Alan Willis for covering the presidential duties for me at that dance since we were out of town. I heard good things about the dance, and was sorry to have missed it.

tinued through Tuesday December 17 at Valencia Meadows Park. We ended the Beginning 1 class with a party night, with substitute caller Dick Hodnefield.

Rob and Joy Starks offered their home for our Christmas party on Saturday Dec. 7. The culinary artists in our group were in fine form for the potluck. The games were a big hit, with an unusually challenging assortment of items to guess in the mystery bag game. The Christmas Carol quiz was my favorite. The gift exchange added to a fun evening. The board meeting was held on Wednesday December 11 at the home of Jody Milligan and John King.

The board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday January 15, again at the home of John King and Jody Milligan. On Sunday January 26 we are supporting the Halfway Class Level Student Stomp sponsored by A Square D Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara district clubs. The dance is at Wilkinson Center in Northridge from 2 to 4:30 pm. Our restaurant fundraiser is at Souplantation on Monday January 27 from 5 to 8 pm. Thank you for your continued support of our club and the square dance activity, and most of all for your friendship Angie Messina, President

by Alan E. Willis, ASD Delegate

Associated Square Dancers (A Square D) has a great start to the new year in store for you! Our Valley/Ventura/Santa Barbara District clubs will be putting on their annual half-way dance for students, the Student Stomp, on Sunday, January 26, 2014. The dance will be held from 2:00 – 4:30 PM at the Wilkinson Center, 8956 Vanalden Avenue, Northridge, CA. Angels and club members are encouraged to attend to support the students from the various classes in the area that started this past September. Tickets are $7 each at the door. Bill Horst will act as Master of Ceremonies with Dick Hodnefield, Dale Hoppers, Lloyd Lewis, Arlen Miller, Don Schadt and our own Rod Shuping sharing the calling duties for the afternoon. Refreshments will be provided, and thanks go out to Jody Milligan, Sharon Seguine, Karen Geller-Shinn, Phil Hays, Carol Posthumus and Angie Messina for volunteering to supply treats on behalf of our club. Each club is also being asked to bring at least two donated items to be used as door prizes at the dance, and I’ll be contacting our members shortly to see if anyone has anything they’d like to donate.

There will also be a square dance clothing sale – a major fundraiser for the clubs who put on the dance and who share in the proceeds from the clothing sale. The clothing sale starts at 1:00 PM (arrive early for the best selection and you’ll have up to an hour to shop before the dance starts!) and will run throughout the dance with payment by cash or check made payable to “A Square D”. If you would like to donate items to the clothing sale, there’s still a little time left. You need to call Don & Renee Krall at (818) 360-8750 or (818) 324-7069 or email them at [email protected] RIGHT AWAY to make arrangements to deliver your items to them prior to Wednesday, January 8, 2014.

Kitchen Report by Angie Messina

Thanks to the Kitchen Crew for our December 1 Jingle Bell Ball, Pat and Will Barker, George and Adel Kirby, and Bob Kofnovec, as well as anyone else who brought goodies. The Kitchen Crew for our January 5 Noisy New Year Celebration consists of Frank Kopecky and Gail Blair, Hans Lokkart, Margaret MacCurdy, and Linda and Ron Marrin. Please be reminded that we put out light appetizer-type munchies at the beginning of the dance, saving the majority of the food for break time at 3:45. When it is your turn to serve, we ask each person to please bring enough refreshments to feed two squares. This means a couple should bring food to feed four squares. If you can’t serve on the date you are scheduled, please arrange a switch and notify Phil Hays and me (Angie Messina) so I can correctly acknowledge the people who are serving. If you are assigned to the kitchen crew, you are asked not only to bring refreshments, but also to help arrange the food on the serving table, and to help clean up after the dance. If you can’t stay to help clean up, it is suggested that you trade dates with someone else, so that the burden of clean-up is shared by the entire crew.

KITCHEN CREW INSTRUCTIONS Please arrive between 1:30 and 1:45 PM – we rely on the Kitchen Crew members to help Phil Hays set up the decorations for the dance and two members to act as Club Greeters. If everyone arrives on time, the work goes quickly and the Kitchen Crew will be able to enjoy the round dancing starting at 2:00 PM. Also, if you are assigned to the Kitchen Crew for this dance but cannot serve, it is YOUR responsibility to make arrangements to switch with someone assigned to a future dance (a copy of the 2013 Kitchen Crew assignment list is available on the Sierra Hillbillies website, www.sierrahillbillies.org) and to follow through at that future date. Please contact Kathy Kerner at (661) 259-8800 to coordinate food dishes and notify her of any Kitchen Crew substitutions.

Now that we’ve all had a chance to party like it’s 2013, it’s time to head back to the classroom – the beginning square dance classroom, that is. The second of our three sessions covering beginning square dance starts on Tuesday, January 14, 2014. We will once again be at Valencia Meadows Park, 25671 Fedala Rd., Valencia, CA from 7:00Rod Shuping. One significant change this year is that the class has been shortened to 7 weeks and the registration fee reduced to $49.00, because the Valencia Meadows Park community room will be closed for two weeks (2/10-2/21) while the floor is being replaced. We have been in touch with Santa Clarita Parks and Recreation about moving temporarily to anotavoid going dark for those two weeks in February. By next month we should have a decision on our request.

The second half will see us covering the first ten Plus calls with the remaining 20 Plus calls being the focus of the spring session of Beginning III. Be sure to show up as often as you can to help out as an angel or even sign up as a student to brush up on your Plus calls. Information on registration is available online at www.santa-clarita.com/seasons. We will also be accepting registrations at the door of the first two classes on January 14 and 21. .

New Editor Sought for the Sierra Hillbilly Holler by Sharon Devol

Due to several unfortunate circumstances, I am resigning my position as the Editor of the Sierra Hillbilly Holler beginning with the March, 2014 issue. Who would like to step up and take the reins? All the Holler reporters are excellent at turning in their articles on time. Training is included, with as much hand-holding as you need! Please contact me at [email protected] or President Angie if you are willing to help. And thank you!

A Very Merry Hillbilly Christmas!

Sunshine Corner

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO: Sharon Seguine 1/05 Margaret MacCurdy 1/25 Karen Geller-Shinn 1/29

and former Hillbilly Mary Jane Hartman 1/18

(No January Anniversaries)

All the news that’s fit we print: Hello New Year! The holidays are past & they were glorious, if stressful, crowded & over tiring from the work involved. The Hillbillies had a wonderful holiday party hosted by Joy & Rob Starks. Rob always provides a great bag game, where you have to identify items simply by touch. And of course we had the gift exchange, which is always great fun. A big “Thank you” to all those who attended our holiday party and brought food for the pantry, or checks to Wellness Works. Both are greatly appreciated. Apparently, we also had elves that placed cookies among the other goodies. As we look forward to the coming year may it be filled with new beginnings & a more peaceful world where we understand & appreciate our differences. We had a real scare with Will Barker. Pat had to take him to emergency. It turned out he had a blocked heart stent, so they just by-passed it with two more. I wonder if Will sets off the metal detector at the airport? Anyway, he is doing fine, has even been out grocery shopping with Pat. Anne Hays went north for a few days in order to spend time with her daughter & help out after she had some minor surgery. Moms are so good at caretaking. Kathy Kerner wishes to express her “Thanks” for the donation the Hillbillies sent to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund in memory of her mother. Unfortunately, to date there is no cure for this dreaded disease & many of our family members & friends are being afflicted. The Messina’s, Angie & Bob, along with mom Esther DeGregorio have been on the move again. They traveled to Chicago to attend the wedding of Bob’s nephew. Then, on to Rochester NY to spend Thanksgiving with cousins. As if that wasn’t enough, they traveled all the way to New Hampshire to visit more cousins. What a family! However, the lesson learned was how much they appreciate the California weather. The Sunshine Lady & the VP spent Thanksgiving at Bass Lake with numerous family members. The weather was beautiful, unusually warm for the time of year. We drove up to Yosemite one day to see the Mariposa Grove & found the place packed with sightseers. Editor Sharon Devol’s church puts on a fabulous concert each year in which Sharon not only sings, but also plays with the handbell ringers. How do you learn to play a handbell? Sharon’s schedule is so full & she has been such a great editor we will sorely miss her. Another incredible display at Christmas was at Wakefield Place. The decorations are just overwhelming in this double cul-de-sac. One home won an award for being the most creative. The homeowner had actually built a carousel, complete with horses, which filled up their driveway. If you haven’t seen this wonderful event put it on your agenda for next year. Mabel Hignite sends Christmas & New Years greetings to all. We miss Mabel & all she did for our club for many years. Also missed are: Joanne & Bob Marrin, Tammy & Paul Allgood, Chris & Cat Spicker and Gerry White. They each contributed in so many different ways to help keep our club a functioning entity.

Thought for the month: “A faith is a necessity to a man. Woe to him who believes in nothing.”
