The Emancipation Proclamation
• Issued on January 1, 1863 during the 3rd year of the Civil War
• It granted freedom to all slaves in the rebelious states
• Flawed- Border states and some Confederate states were not included
The Emancipation Proclamation Cont.
• Accepted black men into the Union Army – over 200,000 black soldiers served in the war
• Gave the Union army a moral stance. Fighting for freedom.
• Strenghthened the Union militarily and politically

African American slaves developed their culture out of the severe adversity they faced
Forged communities through folk tales, music and dance
Through song they passed messages, promote ideals and values and protest their situation
Some slaves gave up dancing at the insistence of white preachers so they developed the “ring shout”

They didn’t consider it dancing as long as they didn’t cross their feet.
