Smart Urban Energy

The generation and management of energy is animportant challenge for every city. Governmentsworldwide are making it a goal to develop clean andrenewable energy to ensure energy sufficiency andsecurity. Meanwhile, the mass production of solarpanels in Asia has made the generation of solarenergy more affordable. This has enabled an increasein the consumption of solar energy in both theindustrial and residential sectors. Traditionally, consumption of solar energy is easily accessible forhome owners with rooftops.

Reducing Pedestrian Fatality toZero

We highlight existing research on pedestrian safety inthe United States, with a focus on crashcharacteristics and the safety effects of variousintersection features and traffic-control devices. Datashows that across the US, half of pedestrian fatalitiesoccur from 6PM to midnight, and that pedestriansare then 3X to 6.8X more vulnerable at night than inthe daylight. We show that smart cities sometimeshave a knee-jerk reaction to add more light, while webelieve it should be about making lights smarter, specially if the goal is to reduce pedestrian fatality tozero.
