Catholic Scientists Discuss the Big Questions
While I studied at Cambridge for my PhD in archeology and social anthropology, my class-mates were often shocked to find out that I was not only an active Christian but a priest and missionary. They were all either atheists or doubting agnostics, and they couldn’t understand how I could hold to the Christian faith and at the same time be a true scien-tist—which in their minds meant paying homage to the god of falsifiability. And since faith is non-material, it is along with Santa Clause and Mary Pop-pins, among the first and easiest things to be falsified. And even worse, how I could be callous enough, they would say, “to force others to leave their beautiful customs and be held down by the colonial oppression of Christianity.”
More often than not, we the Christian faithful today are also similarly condemned or discounted by youth-ful proponents of our modern age for having our heads in the clouds and not recognizing the many sci-entific discoveries that seem to challenge or even ne-gate the bible, tenets of faith, or Church traditions. But, in the words of St. Thomas Aquinas, the faith trajectory is always one of “faith seeking understand-ing” and not understanding seeking (or more often) trying to deny or falsify faith. In response to this, the first conference of the Society of Catholic Scientists, 100 strong, met last month at Chicago’s Knickerbock-er Hotel to discuss: The origin of consciousness, the origin of human language, the origin of the cosmos, and the origin of living things. Some of the questions they discussed included: “might there be other planets that harbor life - perhaps one of the recently discov-ered earth-like ‘exoplanets’? Might there even be oth-er universes?” Their aim was to foster fellowship
among Catholic scientists and to provide a resource and discussion forum for questions about science and faith.
The physicist, Marissa March, spoke on the topic “The Catholic Scientist in the Secular World: What is the meaning of our vocation and how does it distin-guish us?” Father Joachim Ostermann, O.F.M., a Ca-nadian Franciscan and a biochemistry professor, spoke about science in light of the Christian view of the human person. Other conference speakers includ-ed Brother Guy Consolmagno, S.J the Vatican Obser-vatory director; Karin Öberg, an astronomy professor at Harvard; and professor Kenneth R. Miller. Non-Catholic speakers included MIT’s Robert C. Berwick, and the theoretical physicist John D. Barrow, from Cambridge, UK.
Barrow discussed his views on the origin and evolu-tion of universes, while Berwick spoke on the ideas he and Prof. Noam Chomsky developed on the begin-nings of human language and why human language is so special. The Society has several hundred members including some of the top researchers in the fields of astrobiology, evolutionary theory, and super-string theory. The society’s president is Stephen M. Barr, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Delaware.
The society held its first-ever Gold Mass at MIT’s chapel November 15. It chose the term “Gold Mass” because it is the color of the hoods worn by those graduating with a doctorate in science and because St. Albert the Great, a medieval philosopher with a strong interest in natural sciences, was an alchemist who worked to turn base metals into gold. That Mass fol-lowed the tradition of Masses for other professions, such as Red Masses for lawyers, White Masses for medical professionals, and Blue Masses for police officers.

AROUND TOWN
Daily Prayer for Our Priests
O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful & tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely & desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity. Amen. --St. Therese of Lisieux
