From the first letter to Serapion by Saint Athanasius, bishop It will not be out of place to consider the ancient tradition, teaching and faith of the Catholic Church, which was revealed by the Lord, proclaimed by the apostles and guarded by the fathers. For upon this faith the Church is built, and if anyone were to lapse from it, he would no longer be a Christian either in fact or in name. We acknowledge the Trinity, holy and perfect. Accordingly, in the Church, one God is preached, one God who is above all things and through all things and in all things. God is above all things as Father, for he is principle and source; he is through all things through the Word; and he is in all things in the Holy Spirit. y and perfect, to consist of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In this Trinity there is no intrusion of any alien element or of anything from outside, nor is the Trinity a blend of creative and created being. It is a whol-ly creative and energizing reality, self-consistent and undivided in its active power, for the Father makes all things through the Word and in the Holy Spirit……(continued page 5)

O Lord, our God, may our reception of this Sacrament and our acknowledg-ment of the holy and eternal Trinity and Its undivided Unity profit us unto health of mind and body. Through our Lord.

Excerpt from Monsignor Michael Schmitz’ sermon on Pentecost Sunday: (The entire sermon was translated and emailed for the Oakland apostolate. If you wish to be on the mailing list, please send your request to [email protected].)

… “Pentecost repeats itself many times in Church history. Christians are often fearful in the face of the crises of world history. They don't believe in the majesty of God. They doubt the risen Lord. They no longer know about the power of the Holy Spirit. And yet the Trinitarian God is present in His Church until the end of time! Again and again He saves them from destruction; again and again He defeats the lack of faith and error; again and again He builds the church anew and greater in the midst of the crises of the time! … “Be it external or internal crises: The Church always stands up again and every crisis makes her stronger and more courageous than before. None of this is based on human strength or action. If the Church depended on us, she would never have left the Upper Room in Jerusalem, where the apostles were trembling. As humanly as the outward appearance of the Church has sometimes ap-peared in her members, as fearful, incompetent and doubtful as the apostles, bishops and priests may have been, as much as the sins of all Christians weaken the outward action of the Church, so strong and overpowering in her is the Holy Spirit. St. Augustine rightly says: "What the soul is in our bodies is the Holy Spirit in the body of Christ, which is the Church”. (Sermo CCLXVII de tempore, c.4. PL 38, 1231). “That is why the great Pope Leo XIII was able to exclaim in his famous encyclical "Divinum illus munus" at Pentecost in 1897: The Holy Spirit communicates the "truth ... in full to the Church and lends her His constant and caring support so that she never falls into error , so that she can always unfold the seeds of divine teaching and bring them to full maturity for the healing of the people. Because now the salvation of the peoples, for which the Church is destined, necessarily presupposes the continuation of her ministry through all times, the Holy Spirit always gives her life and strength to strengthen her in her existence and growth." The hierarchy, the sacraments, the divine order, indeed all the gifts of grace of the Church and her members come from her soul, the Holy Spirit. Again, Pope Leo XIII says: “The fact that the Church is a thoroughly divine work is evident from no other proof than from the glori-ous splendor of the gifts of grace with which she is endowed in every respect; a work and gift of the Holy Spirit, of course.”

MESSAGE FROM FR. GLENN NAGUIT The Staff of the Parish are working to make the Church ready for the resumption of public Mass-es. We are awaiting any instructions from downtown Oakland. Please check the Parish website at stmar-garetmaryoak.org for the latest. If you do not use the internet, you may call the Parish office at (510) 482-0596 and hit extension 2 to hear some of the pertinent announcements. After over two months, we may soon see the resumption of Masses and other liturgies in the Diocese. The task is how to implement the guidelines for our Parish. There are limitations on the number of people that can be admitted into the Church build-ing at any time. We may use the online application called Signupgenius.com for you to reserve your place at a Mass of your choice. Go to the site, then click on the search button on the upper right hand corner. The sign-up isn’t up-and-running yet, pend-ing the resumption of public Masses. To sign up, you will need to enter the Parish’s email address: [email protected]. You may also visit the Parish website to access the sign-up application. * I pray every day for the well-being and health of all our Parishioners. Let us continue to pray for each other. We continue to pray for those who are sick. We remember also those who have died. May the Lord grant them eternal rest. We must not forget to pray for our Nation: that after this has passed, we may all resume the lives that for several weeks now have been put on hold. * I would like to thank all who have stepped up by continuing to donate to the Parish: those who are continuing to mail in their donations, those who dropped their donations into the donation box/basket in the Church, and those who have donated through WeShare or Paypal. I know these are anxious times for many financially, so I am deeply grateful to those who remember the Parish. The Diocese has created an online giving portal at https://www.oakdiocese.org/parish-support You can use this portal to donate not only to St. Mar-garet Mary, but also to other parishes in the Diocese. 100% of your donations through the portal go to the parish. Thank you.

Growth: A Family Project All of us—grandparents, parents, children and grandchildren—are called to give the best of our-selves at every moment, with God’s help, in order to impart a Christian tone to our family. Parents also grow with their children, and with the passage of the years family roles can inter-change. The one who guided others before is now guided; the one who led cedes this responsibility to those coming after. The home formed by everyone is much more than the pri-mary resource for the basic necessities of nutrition, warmth and clothing. Along with all that, it is the place where we discover the beauty of authentic hu-man values; of self-control and respect, so necessary for inter-personal relationships; (Saint John Paul II, Familiaris consortio, November 22, 1981, no. 66) of responsibility, loyalty and a spirit of service. All these values are forged in a slow fire that requires a simple but strong sense of belonging: the awareness of not having been simply “thrown” into the world, but “welcomed” from the start into a small portion of the world, not made of soil but of affection, a family. God himself “chose to be born in a human family, which he himself formed. He formed it in a remote village on the periphery of the Roman Em-pire ... And someone might say: ‘But did this God, who comes to save us, waste thirty years there, in that insignificant periphery?’ He wasted thirty years! He willed this. Jesus’ path was in that family.” (Pope Francis, General audience, December 17, 2014) Knowing they love us A hundred times a minute there takes place in the world what happened when we were born: joy that a child is born into the world.[5] True, we are one among many born on the same day. Nonetheless we are unique and irreplaceable, and willed from all eter-nity: “Each of us is the fruit of God’s thought. Each of us is willed, each of us is loved, each of us is nec-essary.” (Jn 16:21). No person enters the world by accident; each is of great value, is worth everything. Even someone who perhaps has not known his or her parents, or was adopted by a family. “Each soul is a wonderful treas-ure; every human being is unique and irreplaceable. Every single person is worth all the blood of Christ.” (Benedict XVI, Homily on the occasion of the solemn beginning of the Petrine ministry, April 24, 2005). We owe so much to our parents, whoever they may be, despite their weaknesses and difficul-ties.

From the first letter to Serapion by Saint Athanasius, bishop …….in this way the unity of the holy Trinity is pre-served. Accordingly, in the Church, one God is preached, one God who is above all things and through all things and in all things. God is above all things as Father, for He is principle and source; He is through all things through the Word; and He is in all things in the Holy Spirit. Writing to the Corinthians about spiritual mat-ters, Paul traces all reality back to one God, the Father, saying: Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of service but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in everyone. Even the gifts that the Spirit dispenses to indi-viduals are given by the Father through the Word. For all that belongs to the Father belongs also to the Son, and so the graces given by the Son in the Spirit are true gifts of the Father. Similarly, when the Spirit dwells in us, the Word who bestows the Spirit is in us too, and the Father is present in the Word. This is the meaning of the text: My Father and I will come to him and make our home with him. For where the light is, there also is the radiance; and where the radiance is, there too are its power and its resplendent grace. This is also Paul’s teaching in his second letter to the Corinthians: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spir-it be with you all. For grace and the gift of the Trinity are given by the Father through the Son in the Holy Spirit.

For what by Thy revelation we believe of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, with-out difference or separation; so that in confessing the true and eternal God-head, in It we should adore distinction in persons, unity in Essence, and equality in Majesty: in praise of which Angels and Archangels, Cherubim also and Seraphim day and night exclaim, without end and with one voice saying
