Head Coach Marcus ZiemerThe 2010 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 20th as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State University.

A two-time all-conference performer for Sonoma State in the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 258-112-39 record over the past 19 years. Though his squads have had success year in and year out

(just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves of the last four seasons have taken winning to a whole different level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves to a 48-6-6 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 65-16-12 over the last four seasons, with three NCAA Tournament appearances and a NCAA West Region Championship in 2007.

Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first national championship.

Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA cham-pionship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts.

Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 190-60-20 in conference play.

In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.

Celosmanovic is tied for the conference lead in scoring with 12 goals and Chris Akwaja has net-ted nine scores, as the two combine for 21 of Chico State’s 31 goals this season. Goalkeeper Sam Evans is third in the CCAA in goals against average (0.87), as he has given up just 10 goals in 13 matches this season. Chico State and Sonoma State split the season series this season -- both teams won on their respective home fields

Scouting No. 4 Seed Cal State Dominguez Hills (13-4-2, 10-4-2 CCAA)The Toros will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed in the tournament after finishing second in the CCAA South Division standings. The defending CCAA champions are ranked 24th in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II poll and are No. 4 in this week’s NCAA Division II West Region poll. Cal State Dominguez Hills, who is making its 12th appearance in the conferece tournament (16-3 record) with seven CCAA titles, is riding a three-match win streak where the Toros have outscored their opponents 10-0 during that stretch. CSUDH won the national championship two seasons ago and are looking to defend its west region title this season. As the highest scoring team in the conference, the Toros have outscored their opponents 42-18, including 22-7 in the second half. They are led by the seven goals and eight assists of Andre Turoldo. Goalkeeper Markus Dickerson is third in the CCAA in goals against average (0.87) and has recorded seven shutouts in 2010. Cal State Dominguez Hills and Sonoma State have faced each other in the championship match in each of the past three seasons and it was the Toros who defeated the Seawolves 3-2 in double overtime in last year’s tournament final. CSUDH is also the only team that SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer has a losing record against, as the Toros have a 16-6-2 record against the Seawolves in Ziemer’s 20 years at the helm, including a 3-0 victory over Sonoma State earlier this season in Carson.

Sonoma State History in the CCAA TournamentIn the 12 year history of the CCAA Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament, the Seawolves are mak-ing their 10th appearance. Sonoma State is 6-7-1 all-time in the tournament with two champion-ships under its belt (2005 and 2008). In 2005, SSU defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 1-0 in double overtime to win the title. In 2008, the Seawolves again defeated the Toros, but it came on a 6-5 win in penalty kicks after the match ended in a 0-0 tie. In nine previous appearances, Sonoma State reached the title match five times and are 2-3 in such games, all of which have been against Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Ranked Sixth in NCAA Division II West Region PollIn the official NCAA Division II West Region poll released Tuesday, the Seawolves are ranked sixth. The top four teams in the final poll to be released next week will qualify for the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament. Sonoma State is looking to make an appearance in the postseason for the fourth straight season.

Varnadore Again Named CCAA Player of the Week - Oct. 24-31For the second time this season, freshman forward Taylor Varnadore has been named the Wilson/CCAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for scoring three goals in victories over San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay. Varnadore scored the equalizer in the second half on Friday against the Gators, a game in which the Seawolves later won, 2-1. It clinched a berth into the CCAA Cham-pionship Tournament this weekend. In the regular season finale on Sunday, Varnadore struck again -- twice. The true freshman netted two goals in the 3-1 win over the Otters in Seaside. It was the second weekly honor for Varnadore this season.

Lighting Up The ScoreboardSonoma State is the conference’s second highest scoring team with 40 goals this season, two goals behind Cal State Dominguez Hills. Nineteen of the Seawolves’ 40 goals have been scored by just two players -- junior Trevor Hurst with 10 and freshman Taylor Varnadore with nine. Fourteen players have recorded at least one goal and the Seawolves are outscoring their opponents 40-25, including a 23-9 margin in the second half.

And The Assist Goes To...Junior Cam Vickers handed out two assists this past weekend, giving him a conference-leading 11 on the season. He is tied for second on the all-time list with Christopher Ziemer (1990-91, 97-98). Vickers has 30 career assists, three short of the all-time record of 33 assists, held by former Seawolf Eric Lafon.

Hurst is Second Seawolf to be named Player of the Week -- Oct. 4-10After scoring two game-winning goals to knock off North Division leader Chico State and second place Cal State Stanislaus last weekend, Sonoma State junior forward Trevor Hurst was named the Wilson/CCAA Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. Hurst, a junior from nearby Santa Rosa and Piner High School, turned in a pair of solid performances last weekend, scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory over the 14th-ranked Wildcats on Friday. In Sunday’s 4-3 shootout victory over the Warriors, Hurst again netted the game-winner with 15 minutes remaining in regulation. It capped off a sensational Sunday for Hurst, who collected two assists as well.

Freshman Phenom Earns CCAA Player of the Week Award - Sept. 6-12Taylor Varnadore, a freshman and local product from Sebastopol and Analy HS, totaled eight points (four goals) while helping the Seawolves to a CCAA-opening split against Cal Poly Pomona and No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino. The 17-year old true freshman scored a pair of goals in a 5-3 loss to the Broncos on Friday (9/10) and followed up that performance with two scores in a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes on Sunday (9/12). He becomes the first men’s soccer player to earn the weekly award since former Seawolf Eric Lafon did so during the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2008 and is also the first fresh-man to grab the award since 2005.
