Executive summary

Welcome to the Deloitte South Australian Stock Exchange Quarterly Index(Deloitte SA Index) for 30 June 2017.

The Deloitte SA Index is a quarterly review of South Australian stocks. It is compiled from publicly available information provided by the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). The Deloitte SA Index is based on the market capitalisation weighted share price performance of South Australian listed companies. The impact of dividends and capital returns are excluded from the Index, which currently comprises 64 companies.

The Deloitte SA Index has increased by 1.2% over the last 12 months whilst the S&P/ASX 200, increased by 9.3% over the same period.

The S&P/ASX 200 outperformed the Deloitte SA Index in the June quarter recording a decrease of 2.4%, compared to a decrease of 3.2% by the Deloitte SA Index. Following an uplift in April, both the S&P/ASX 200 and SA Index experienced declines in May whilst remaining relatively steady in June. The absolute total market capitalisation of the state’s 64 listed companies decreased by $2.8 million, a decrease of 10.1% during the June quarter, from $27.96 billion to $25.12 billion.

Deloitte SA Index top performers in the June quarter represented a broad mix of industries, three of which have been identified as cylinders within the engine of growth for the South Australian economy. Cylinders of growth are strategic industries where Deloitte has identified South Australia has significant global growth opportunities due to a natural competitive advantage. The identified industries include Energy & Gas, Agribusiness and Health & Medical industries.

Stephen Adams Partner | Financial Advisory Market Leader – South Australia

Within the Agribusiness cylinder, Elders Limited’s share price reached a ten year high this quarter after posting positive earnings results, the acquisition of a horticultural service provider and completing the divestment of their live export logistics business.

Similarly, Clean Seas Tuna Limited released positive earnings, upgraded profit forecasts and announced expected expansion into international markets. Clean Seas Tuna Limited enjoyed a 39.4% increase in share price this quarter.

In the Energy & Gas cylinder, Cooper Energy, an oil and gas company, completed a $151 million capital raising to part fund the Sole Gas Project. The market capitalisation of Cooper Energy Limited increased by $189 million in the June quarter.

Reproductive Health Services, a developer of single cell genomic technologies within the Medical industry cylinder, saw a share price increase of 106.7% this quarter after completing asuccessful capital raising of $1.5 million and announcing positive results from independent research into the company’s patented technology.

Stephen Adams Partner | Financial Advisory Market Leader – South Australia

The top performing businesses profiled above exemplify the benefits of strong strategic direction coupled with South Australia’s natural competitive advantage in a national and global market.

Compilation of the Deloitte SA IndexCompilation of the Deloitte SA Index The quarterly Deloitte SA Index is compiled from publicly available information provided by the ASX on the share prices and market capitalisation of each South Australian listed company.

A company is included on the Deloitte SA Index if its registered office is in South Australia. Dual-listed companies are not included in the Deloitte SA Index. The information on South Australian listed companies is extracted to provide a market capitalisation weighted share price index for all South Australian companies broadly in line with the methodology adopted for the compilation of the S&P/ASX 200 Index. The impact of dividends and capital returns has been excluded from the Deloitte SA Index.

The base period of the Deloitte SA Index is 30 June 2005, and for the purposes of the Index this month is given a notional value of one. Please note, if a company has been delisted during a particular period, no data will be included for that month and all subsequent months until the company is relisted. Historical information regarding the company will continue to be included in the calculation of the Deloitte SA Index.
