Our focus today is cuckooing. This term is used to describe someone who moves into someone elses home and takes it over. Sometime the person moving in can pretend to be a friend who helps you out but then the relationship changes and they take advantage or worse take over. The victim can find it hard to stop what is happening because they let them move in, they are scared of reprisals from them or their friends, or because they think they are being kept safe eventhough they no longer have any say in what is happening in their own home.If you are worried that someone may be in danger call the Police on 999If this is in a BCC property call the council on 0117 922 2200, select option 4.Friday 19 JuneOn the last day of Stop Adult Abuse Week we want to make sure that we all look after ourselves and each other. GP surgeries are open but they may be a bit different. If you are worried about your health, give them a call and they will give you give you advice and, if required, they will arrange an appointment.

Press releasePress Release - Stop Adult Abuse Week 15 - 19 June 2020As shops across the UK re-open for business, the 5 Safeguarding Boards across the Avon & Somerset area are coming together to highlight the issue of adult abuse. The week long Stop Adult Abuse Week Starts on 15th June, the same day many retail outlets will open for trade again. The week campaign will run across Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, Somerset and South Gloucestershire and aims to highlight that everyone should be alert in helping to prevent adult abuse, by knowing how to spot the signs and knowing how to get help if needed.During the Covid 19 outbreak and restrictions imposed on social distancing there has been an increase in abuse of vulnerable people in their homes, through cuckooing. This can involve strangers, taking over a vulnerable persons home, using it has a base for illegal activity such as drug dealing. It can also include friends and family members moving in, using the vulnerable person’s food and money for their own purposes, leaving the vulnerable person in debt and without enough food. There has also been an increase in domestic abuse and in financial scams during Covid 19.The week will include themed days, with Monday focusing on spotting the signs of adult abuse and neglect and how to report it. Tuesday will focus on financial scams and Wednesday will be dedicated to raising awareness of domestic abuse, with Thursday focusing on the growing issue of Cuckooing. Self-neglect will be the focus on Friday and this will include details of Bristol NHS support services that are currently open and can help. The Abuse exists in many different forms, such as financial abuse, physical abuse, and neglect. These types of abuse can happen to anyone, however those at greater risk include those whose care and support needs affect their ability to protect themselves, such as the elderly, people living with learning disabilities, mental ill-health or severe illness. The Independent Chair of the Keeping Bristol Safe Partnership, Ivan Powell said “We know locally referrals into the Bristol Adults Safeguarding Unit have increased during Covid 19. We also know through research (Hawkley and Cacioppo, 2010) and the findings from our Serious Case Reviews that people who are lonely and isolated are frequently more vulnerable to being targeted for abuse and exploitation, and fear Covid 19 is causing those who are vulnerable to isolate even further from their communities and sources of help.We want the people of Bristol to continue to look out for each other during Covid 19, and if you’re concerned regarding the actual or potential abuse of a loved one, a colleague, a friend or a neighbour, please make a point of reporting it” Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “Adult abuse is one of the hidden harms that unfortunately continues to plague our communities. We must do all we can to protect our most vulnerable residents from any risk of harm. It is everyone’s responsibility to make sure that vulnerable adults in our communities are treated with the respect and dignity that they deserve.“This adult abuse week, I hope we can educate local people about the impact of adult abuse and encourage more people to speak up and take action if they notice something is wrong. We all have a duty to protect our community and this should involve speaking out if there is any suspicion that local people are suffering abuse.”

If you’re concerned about someone you know in Bristol being abused or neglected call Care Direct on 0117 922 2700, or if the danger is immediate call 999.You can read more about stop adult abuse week and other safeguarding information on the Keeping Bristol Safe Partnership website: https://bristolsafeguarding.org/news/stop-adult-abuse-week/
