Christmas means many things to many people.

For seniors in the Stettler area and elsewhere, the traditions of Christmases past remain etched in their memories and often contrast decidedly from children’s experiences in the modern era.

Points West Living residents shared some of those Christmas refl ections from their childhood:

— What were some of your childhood Christmas traditions?

Freda Nims: “Well, we didn’t have a tree. And Santa Claus didn’t come. They didn’t believe in that, my parents. They came from Russia, so they didn’t believe in that. We always celebrated it, because we knew it was because Christ was born. But we had no Santa Claus come to our house.”

Jim Ellwood: “There were five in the family, my parents and three kids, and we always bought presents for each other. We usually went to church … we lived on the farm, so we’d go in the cutter to church with the horses.”

Mildred Howlett: “Really English, all the English traditions. We had the roast turkey and all the trimmings, and Santa Claus came. The kids hung their stockings just the same as they do now.”

Bill Jamieson: “We stayed home most of the time. We had no way of going anywhere other than with a team and wagon. We didn’t have any cars.”

Jenny Gordon: “We celebrated on Dec. 24 always. Then I got married and it worked out really well because we could have my Christmas with my family and then

celebrate on the 25th with my husband.”

— What was your favourite gift?

Nims: “My dad gave us each an orange and an apple and some peanuts and some candy. And that was it.”

Ellwood: “I remember one time, I was up in the hay loft poking around, and I see this toboggan there, so I knew what my present was gonna be. ‘Oh boy, am I ever surprised to see that. Isn’t that a good present?’ ”

Howlett: “A doll. It’s as big as a year old. And I had a whole box of baby clothes, just for that doll. And I had this box full of clothes and I was about 10 years old and these people were visiting, this woman and her kids, and my mother gave that little girl my doll and all my clothes, and I wanted to keep her.

She said, ‘Millie never plays with it anymore.’ Well, I guess not, I was 10 years old. I wanted to keep it. (Jokingly), I never forgave my mother for that.”

Jamieson: “We didn’t get very much. We were quite poor. We got a sack of candy or something, or an orange.”

Gordon: “At the Christmas concert when we were kids, we used to get candy and nuts in a little brown bag, and there was a Japanese orange.

To me, that was absolutely wonderful. It’s not a gift, but it was one of the things I remember more than anything.”

Hubert: “My favourite gift, and the only gift that I remember as a young child, was a doll. You could turn the arms and

turn the neck. But it had a crack, right down from its cheek to underneath its cheek. My father had a hardware store and he used to get toys in. I got the doll that was broken, but I loved it so much. And Dad told me Santa Claus made a mistake and dropped it. I still have the doll.”

— What kind of food did you have at Christmastime?

Ellwood: “We raised turkeys, so we always had turkeys, and being on the farm, we always had vegetables, potatoes. My mom used to make a really big Christmas dinner and New Year’s dinner.”

Hubert: When the family’s all together, there would be two turkeys: one made with apples and one made with bread dressing.”

Gordon: Oftentimes when we were kids, it

was goose my mother cooked. She cooked it just perfect. She did red cabbage, and we had two different desserts.

— What was your favourite part of Christmas?

Ellwood: “Christmas Day, presents and stuff like that. Then after that, we’d have company come and the visiting and stuff.”

Howlett: “Outside of presents, the Christmas concert at school. That was always exciting.”

Gordon: “I almost think it was the Christ-mas concert that we had at the school. We all performed.”

Hubert: “It was probably just being surrounded with family and going to the Christ-mas festival at the church, the singing and all. That stands out quite a bit.”

the common sense solutionto secondary containment

The holiday countdown is on and it’s time to get your house razzle-dazzle ready. But before you do, make sure to check that your lights and decorations are still in good working or-der after a year in storage.

Not only can old decor look worn out, but it also can put you and your family at risk — which is the last thing anyone wants at this joyous time of year.

CSA Group, a leader in public safety testing and

certification, offers these tips to help you stay safe this holiday:

— Carefully inspect light strings each year. Dis-card any with frayed cords, cracked lamp holders or loose connections. Inspect for storage damage from moisture or rodents.

— Turn off the electric-ity to the supply outlet be-fore working with outdoor wiring. Unplug light strings before replacing bulbs and check to ensure replacement

bulbs match the voltage and wattage of the original. To avoid a shock from dam-aged wires, use insulated fasteners rather than metal nails or tacks to hold light strings in place.

— Make decorating a family activity by planning this year’s theme with the kids, but don’t let kids or pets play with light strings.

— Keep electrical con-nectors for outdoor lights above ground, out of wa-ter and away from metal

gutters. Connect outdoor lighting into receptacles protected by weatherproof ground fault circuit inter-rupters (GFCI).

Continued on Page 6

Keep the traditions, but ditchthe dangerous, worn-out decor

Page 6: Special Features - Christmas in the Country

Continued from Page 5

These can provide protection from electric shock by sensing ground

leakage and cutting electrical power.— Use heavy-duty extension cords

for high wattage decorations and large

electronically-animated displays, and don’t overload extension cords.

If you need to purchase new lights, look for a certification mark to ensure they are certified by an organization such as CSA Group.

And remember: outdoor holiday

lights are made for seasonal use only; extended exposure to the elements can lead to damage. So when the holidays are over, take down the festive deco-rations and place them back in their original packaging for next year.

Everyone has at least one — the house on the street that lights up in splendor around the Christmas holiday season.

Decorations are in abundance both indoors and out, and just seeing the house brings on a smile. But as beautiful as it might be, that home may also be a safety risk if the decorator hasn’t followed precautions like these offered by CSA Group:

Creativity is key, but not at the cost of safety — Let your inner designer shine, but be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when arranging electrical items, such as lights and electronic decorations.

Be sure to turn off the electricity to the supply outlet before working with outdoor wiring, and never run an electrical cord through a doorway or under a carpet indoors.

Fakes are no laughing matter — Your next-door neighbour dressed up as Santa is funny. Counterfeit decorations are not so funny.

Look for the mark from an accredited certification organization, such as CSA Group, on animated displays, light strings and extension cords. Ensure decorations are marked and certified for outdoor use and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Keep the mood light, but not fiery — Choose flame-resistant decorations and don’t place open flames or candles near flammable materials, such as wreathes, trees or paper decorations. Never nail or tack lighting strings to a wall, as this may damage insulation and create a shock or fire hazard.

Use insulated fasteners rather than metal nails or tacks that could damage wiring to hold light strings in place.

Cosy up — Keep warm by the fireplace but be sure your gas appliances are in good working order. If the pilot light or flame goes out, turn the gas off and wait five minutes or longer

(see the manufacturer’s instructions) before attempting to relight.

Be alert for unusual odors or flames when your gas fireplace is on, often indicating that the fireplace is not operating properly. In such cases, contact your dealer or licensed technician for servicing.

Overload on food, not watts — Don’t overload extension cords. Use heavy-duty extension cords for high wattage decorations and large electronically-animated displays.

For extreme decora-tors, make sure your house is capable of handling the electrical load of multiple lights and decor. If in doubt, contact a licensed professional to inspect your electrical system.

Christmas holiday celebrations are already in full swing — along with the hustle and bustle.

The offi ce parties are already in full swing and storefront windows are all decked out in holiday glitz. Your Christmas lights and decorations are up and all that is left to do is entertain family and friends.

This time of year can be wonderful, but it also brings a certain amount of stress. The last-minute shopping, family visits, kids running around the house and over-crowded shopping centres is exhausting just to think about.

All of that added stress also can affect your immune system. Hugs and handshakes represent golden opportunities for viruses, parasites and bacteria to join in the spirit of holiday sharing.

You wonder how you will ever

make it through the season without catching something.

And then you may ask yourself: Can probiotics really boost my immune system? The answer is yes.

According to dietitian and nutritionist Annie Jolicoeur, many clinical studies have demonstrated the benefi ts of probiotics in terms of preventing and treating the common cold, the fl u and gastroenteritis.

“Taking probiotics reduces the severity and duration of symptoms like fever, coughing, runny nose, and even diarrhea,” explains Jolicoeur. “Therefore, it is recommended that all members of the family take probiotics every day.”

Jolicoeur recommends Probaclac as the ideal solution since it provides probiotic complexes that are designed specifi cally for every age group: children up to the age of 15; adults

(can be taken from the age of 15); and older adults (age 50 and up).

Maintaining a healthy intestinal fl ora helps to protect against the penetration of bacteria, parasites, and viruses, Jolicoeur advised.

“Did you know that the intestinal mucous membrane acts as the ‘cornerstone’ of your overall health? Two-thirds of the immune-defence cells in your body are found there. Therefore, your immune system is enhanced when you take probiotics.”

Here’s a tip: Jolicoeur recom-mends you start taking probiotics at least two weeks before the holiday season begins, so that your body will be prepared to ward off the oncoming germ attacks. More information on the benefi ts of probiotics is available at probaclac.ca.

It’s the time of year when people make resolutions to be a better and healthier version of themselves. So why not make resolutions that will mutually benefi t you and your pet?

Here are some ideas to help you and yours have the best year yet.

— Eat more fresh food. This might seem like an easy resolution. However, it takes time and preparation.

For humans, this means incorporating more fruits and veggies into your diet, while for pets this means ensuring that their pet food uses ingredients such as fresh turkey, salmon and duck, fresh omega 3 and 6 oils (from coconuts and canola), wholesome berries and fruits and vegetables like peas, spinach and carrots. Now Fresh premium petfood by Petcurean is a great example. You can learn more about choosing a pet food with the freshest, healthiest ingredients at petcurean.com.

— Get more exercise. Did you know pets can decrease our blood pressure and cholesterol levels and increase our opportunities for exercise, outdoor activities and socialization? Exercising together will not only help optimize your health but also allow you to spend more time together.

— Use that agenda. This doesn’t seem like a resolution, but sometimes making a plan is the only way resolutions will come to life. Most of us schedule time for other appointments and meetings, so why not set aside some priority time for pets, too?
