Leah Thordarson starting volunteering for Westside Daze back in 2002 in her role then as executive director of the Westbank Chamber of Commerce.

“For me it’s always been

about our community, and there’s nothing nicer than being able to do something for your community,” Thor-darson said.

Today, along with being involved in her own business,

COMMUNITY By Barry Gerding

A passion for her community is what has fueled the long-time involvement in West Kelowna’s annual summer celebration.

Curves, Thordarson serves as president of the Westside Daze Society.

Thordarson cites the cre-ation of the society has given stability to Westside Daze, and the event continues to grow from a stable organiza-tion base after being taken on by various community groups in its history prior to 2002.

“There were a couple of years there where the

event didn’t take place, but through the society we’ve been able to build the event up and attract some really good people in our commu-nity to help organize it,” she said.

She describes the process of planning Westside Daze every year as putting on a party for 35,000 people and leaving a smile on everyone’s face.

“It’s meant to be an easy going event, free and offer-

ing something for everyone,” she said.

Thordarson said Westside Daze receives government grant funding which covers

about 20 per cent of the cost to stage the five-day festival.

“We get a lot of in-kind support from our local busi-ness community which is a tremendous supporter of Westside Daze. Plus, close to 100 volunteers help to make it all possible by carrying out the tasks behind the scenes, from organizing parking to helping with the parade and the Canada Day festivities,” she said.

She said events like the Canada Day cake cutting, the parade, the Show’n Shine car exhibition and the nightly en-tertainment have all become hallmarks of Westside Daze in recent years.

“The Cardboard car contest was very popular last year, put on by Fender’s, and there will be some new

events such as the Okana-gan Science Centre for kids exhibit, the firefighters doing a Jaws of Life display and the West Kelowna arts Council will have an art display set up and artists working on site,” she said.

Thordarson said the West-bank Museum and Westbank First Nation museum displays will also be returning, and hopes in the future that other multicultural exhibits will be added to continue to reflect the evolving ethnic demographic of the com-munity.

“The multicultural compo-nent is something we didn’t get together for this year but would like to see included more in the future,” she added.

Director Chris Haffenden said they had 135 cars and a number of motorcycles at last year’s Westside Daze, the most they’ve ever seen. While they don’t really have room for more than that, he would like to see them reach that number again, plus see more motorcycles.

The car show always sees a large variety of cars from classics that have been restored, original cars that

have been in the family for generations, unique and modified cars, and ‘rat rods’, a type of car that is increasing in popularity.

Rat rods are cars that have been heavily upgraded and modified underneath the hood but the body itself receives no work, resulting in a car that may not look like much but is often very fast. While Haffenden has come to appreciate rat rods, he noted

his favourite cars are always the unique and strange ones.

A mechanic for 35 years, Haffenden has helped many friends restore cars. He is also the owner of a 1985 Honda Goldwing, and knows no restored vehicle took the same amount of work as another. No matter how long it took to restore a car or motorcycle, he says it is always very encouraging to

receive compliments for it.“It’s just the joy of building

something, being able to show it off and take it on the road and do things, it’s just a lot of fun to do.”

The Show and Shine car show runs from 10am to 3pm July 1st at Memorial Park. Free registration begins at 8:30am and while it isn’t necessary to pre-register, it would be appreciated.

Cars and Motorcycles ready to go on displayThe Show and Shine car show has a lot of momentum to build off following a record setting year in 2014.

Pamela Barnes is the Coordinator of Sukanaqin sxelxalt (Okanagan Day), an event that will feature many traditional first nations performances and activities such as drumming, dancing, storytelling, rope making and fishing. While some of those activities will reflect the cultural blending and evolution of Okanagan culture, others will date back well before Christopher Columbus or even the vikings landed in North America.

“Flint knapping, the making of points for spears and arrowheads, rope making, those are techniques that go back thousands of years,” she said. “The stories themselves go back to the time of the plant and the animal people, before there were people, so as far back as can be remembered.”

Barnes would like to see the traditional performances instil a curiosity about

Okanagan culture, as there are thousands of years of cultural history they can teach about.

“(I like) the opportunity to meet the public and share the local culture,” she described. “There’s not a lot of opportunity, most people don’t know a lot about the local culture and history, and really first nations history in general is not well known. In school curriculum we’re really mentioned to tell someone else’s story, but the real true history and story of these lands doesn’t begin with European contact. It leaves out thousands and thousands of years of history.”

Okanagan Day will be on June 28th from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. Teepees will be set up thenight before, and Barnes welcomes anyone who is interested to come watch or try it out themselves.

An opportunity to soak up local cultureOkanagan Day will not only be providing family friendly entertainment at

Westside Daze, it will also be educating attendees about traditional Okanagan culture.

“Previously loved items looking for new homes.”

The Canada Day cake is a tradition that has gone back for many years at Westside Daze.

Anya Dumas began to help bake the cake in 2008, and in 2012 took over the lead role. Baking a cake that measures four-feet-by-six-feet isn’t something that can be quickly accomplished; in fact, it takes Dumas and her two friends, who assist her, roughly two full days to prepare it. While the 24-square-foot cake originally had a buttercream lling, Dumas decided to change it to a banana pudding lling with white chocolate pudding icing the second year she was in charge.

“I thought I would change it because of the heat,” she explained. “Buttercream is very soft, and of course it’s always very hot in July. So I thought I’d try something new, and banana pudding is a good mix with the strawberries.”

While there are many different enjoyable aspects of making the cake, Dumas’ highlight in preparing it comes right at the end of the two-day process

“I think it’s the nishing, when you

know everything comes together,” she described. “When the cake is done and nished, just how it looks. It still amazes me how big the cake is.”

Once the cake is ready to go, it’s transported by ambulance (due to its size and the ambulance having air conditioning) to the Canada Day celebration, which is where the best part of the entire festival takes place for Dumas.

“When they open the door and you see all the people waiting for the cake and waving their hands, that’s really awesome, it makes my day for sure,” she described.

“When everybody enjoys the cake, and you put all the time and work into it, and people say it’s an awesome cake, it’s awesome.”

With a festival as expansive as Westside Daze, there were many areas Dumas could have chosen to volunteer in. But with her love for baking and cooking, she said there really wasn’t much debate over where she would try to help. Although she has now been involved with baking the cake for eight years, she noted she has far too much fun baking it over two days with her ends to consider passing the apron on anytime soon.

…you don’t need to bring anything but your imagination.

That is the message from Jayme Schall, who along with Kirk Chavarie is coordinating the CARdboard Car Building at Westside Daze. The activity was held for the first time last year, and it provides supplies for kids

to make cars out of cardboard and decorate them with other materials. Schall said there are no restrictions, as once the participants get going they can create whatever they want.

“We make a standard car shape, just a little box and then add a windshield by taping it on,” Schall explained. “There are little license plate cutouts they can glue on, and it’s pretty much go from there.”

The activity went over very well last year, and Chavarie noted it wasn’t just the kids who enjoyed it.

“A lot of the parents that came saw it as a good opportunity,” he described. “Finally their kids were putting down their phones, getting away from the TV and getting creative again. A lot of the parents even hopped in and got involved with it. They were all having fun.”

Even with all of the highlights from last year, Schall didn’t hesitate to say what her favourite part was.

“The best thing was just seeing the look on the kids’ faces when they saw what they got to do,” she said. “You just gave them this box with glitter, stickers and steering wheels,

and the cars were big enough for some kids to sit in. Just their faces was the best part.”

There will be enough supplies for 100 participants this year, available first come, first served. The activity will be divided into three groups, each with about one hour to work on their cars. There is one difference this year. Following an awards ceremony at the end, everyone will be able to take their cars home.

Both Schall and Chavarie intend to run the CARdboard Car Building at Westside Daze for many years, and Schall encouraged everyone to come check it out.

“There are no limits, come get creative and see what your mind can come up with.”

CARdboard Car Building will take place on June 27th from 12:00pm to 3:00pm at West Kelowna Memorial Park.

An impressive lineup of performers promises to delight at Westside Daze

SATURDAY, JUNE 27 Aaron Halliday

Aaron Halliday is a Canadian Singer/songwriter. Born in Nova Scotia and currently living in Penticton, Halliday has been performing live for the past 25 years.

He has spent his entire life surrounded by music with early in uences like Merle Haggard, George Jones and Waylon Jen-nings. Later he developed a more modern taste with favorites like Blue Rodeo, Dire Straits, Steve Earl.

Halliday now nds himself leaning more to the traditional roots of country music, which has led him to one of the tradi-tional country music icons of his generation, Alan Jackson.

Halliday’s look, his performance and his gentlemanly quali-ties come across on stage as directly comparable to Jackson.

musicians whose classical, folk and rock backgrounds fuse together to create a dynamic and unique sound that instantly connects and resonates with audiences.

Through their uplifting energy and remarkable stage pres-ence, they weave together a tapestry of tales that evoke a nostalgic experience of days gone by.

Extensive touring has taken them from San Francisco to Newfoundland, playing an average of 100 shows a year with that number steadily on the rise.

Known for their charismatic energy and superior lights and sound production, the band delivers an entertaining show that keeps people coming back for more.

SUNDAY, JUNE 28James Elser

James Elser was born in Calgary, where he started playing piano at the age of 13.

At the onset of lessons, James disliked conventional classical training and his piano teacher, celebrated and honored that, and allowed Elser to learn songs that he wanted to play. The hit TV show from the 1980s Hill Street Blues theme song was the rst real song Elser learned in his rst few months of lessons.

From that point forward he took on television themes, folk tunes, ragtime and classical piano. His taste of the road left him wanting more and when he received his acceptance letter for the Composition Program at UBC’s Musical Program, he crumpled up the letter and chose to go on the road instead.

In the 30 years since, his musical style has continued to encompass elements of folk, rock, ragtime, jazz, blues, classical and his own original music.

His tribute show to crooners touches on the music of such icons as Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble.

Ron enthusiastically embraced crooning,, appreciating that this was a natural progression stemming from his former in u-ences. He had always loved the standards, recognizing that this and other genres were all connected.

Cassandra FriskieWhen you ask Cassandra Friskie when she realized that

singing is what she was born to do, she would respond:”Since I was born.”

Friskie comes from a long line of musicians and started singing professionally at the very young age of eight. Watch-ing her father, Randy “Elvis” Friskie perform for all those years, inspired her to follow in his footsteps, and start impersonating herself.

Her big voice and charisma has landed her huge oppor-tunities, such as opening for Lonestar and The Rascal Flatts, headlining at the Northwest Washington State Fair, singing at the British Columbia Country Music Awards and performing

with the Beach Boys.Although musical tribute impersonating is a huge passion

for her, Friskie is also pursuing a solo career and loves writing and creating her own music.

She is currently working on her debut solo album.
