Charlie Head was the first person
to complete a 1000km,
unsupported standup paddle,
from Land’s End to London.
As a whitewater, ocean and river
paddler, Charlie was also the first
paddler to circumnavigate the
Isle of Wight, paddling 97km in 14
hours. As a result of his success
Fanatic and ION now sponsor him.
He was part of a team of paddlers
who were the first paddleboard
expedition in the Arctic Circle.
With his love of adventure and
the environment, Charlie set up
The Big Stand, a Charitable
Incorporated Organisation (CIO)
that works with disadvantaged
young adults.
Charlie has worked closely with a German boat engineer and Rannoch
Adventure – a leading ocean rowing specialist – to develop the first
ever ocean-fit standup paddleboard.
This vessel will allow Charlie to live unsupported for up to 80 days.
It will provide his electricity, convert seawater to fresh water,
protect him from ocean storms and store his food. The vessel will
be equipped with technology that will play a large part in
Charlie’s safe navigation towards Richard Branson’s Necker or
Mosquito Island. This in itself provides great PR for the challenge
especially since Richard’s passions are water sports, challenges
and ocean conservation as well as helping less advantaged young
people.
In Association with
“If anyone can do this, it has to be Charlie,
the most experienced man in the business!
It gives me pleasure to be part of this
amazing project in a support role and know
Charlie has what it takes to succeed.”
Charlie Pitcher, World Record Holder for unsupported
solo rowing the Atlantic

Communication StrategyCommunication StrategyCommunication StrategyCommunication Strategy
Our communications strategy has begun and it is aimed to maximize the reach
beyond the paddling communities. We would expect to work with your PR and
marketing teams to ensure your brand values are communicated effectively and we
can make the most of opportunities to join up communications. With international
media coverage it is important to us that your brand receives the coverage to
reflect it’s investment and generosity.
We are in talks with Red Bull and Discovery TV, have articles lined up with most SUP
online media channels/papers and Escapism magazine (UK largest travel magazine)
has an article soon to be published. Tenerife are arranging PR for us, as will Fanatic
and ION (International). The possibility of landing on Richard Branson’s island also
poses huge opportunities for additional PR.
The media reach for Charlie’s Land’s End to London challenge, was 36 million people
(approx) worldwide. CNN ran a news piece on him, which can be seen here.
American Airlines magazine ran a piece on him in addition to Yahoo news, Gawker
and approximately 20 other online newspapers and video channels. A general idea
of this reach can be seen via this Google search. As requested, we will be
approaching the majority of these media avenues for this challenge.
Our PR will extend to various other travel magazines that have already expressed
an interest in running a piece as well as local and national papers. We will also be
looking at TV shows such as Blue Peter and The One Show. It is important that our
sponsors fully benefit from their investment and that we promote The Big Stand as
much as possible and therefore this is a crucial part of the challenge.
Social mediaSocial mediaSocial mediaSocial media ---- The team will also be constantly interacting on social media
platforms, the website and blog providing updates on progress and events that
are associated to the challenge. These platforms include:
FacebookFacebookFacebookFacebook: Charlie Head, OceanSUP and The Big Stand (~ likes 2500)
TwitterTwitterTwitterTwitter: @OCEANSUPHEAD and @thebigstanduk (~followers 500)
The website will have a dedicated section for sponsors logo as well as a click
through advert for the Gold sponsors on the home page.

The Big StandThe Big StandThe Big StandThe Big Stand
Co-founded by Charlie, The Big Stand is being set up as a Charitable
Incorporated Organisation (CIO), a non-profit charitable business working with
16 - 25 year olds. Our target audience is mostly disadvantaged unemployed
young adults, but we will also work with homeless or those with disabilities of
the same age. Environment and adventure are at the heart of The Big Stand
where we will run residential (camping) and day courses for our students.
Charlie has a passion for water sports, adventure and the environment and when
he met Kiko Matthews, an ex-Head of Science, The Big Stand was created. Kiko
had gone part time to set up a social enterprise and Charlie was looking for
someone to help support his ideas. She felt that a school environment was not
the place for many students to thrive in, especially not to learn about important
issues such as environmental conservation and their own health and Charlie felt
it was unfair that only a certain sector of young people got to benefit from
water sports and adventure. The rest is history.
Between them, and a group of skilled trustees, The Big Stand is developing into a
very innovative organisation using standup paddling, adventure and
environmental education to develop our students.
The idea developed from a very simple one. Many school leavers are intelligent
enough to go into employment but due to the lack of support, confidence,
direction and motivation, they find themselves unemployed. It is also well
documented that adventure activities help build confidence, develop many life
skills and improve well being. Stand up paddle boarding is easy to learn, being on
the water is renowned for being beneficial to the mind and body and so linking
all these factors has created the successful formula that is The Big Stand.
MissionMissionMissionMission Our mission is to connect young adults to
their environment through adventure,
developing skills that improve their
wellbeing, confidence and employment
status
VisionVisionVisionVision Our vision is to have a centre made out of plastic bottles, cleared from
our beaches by our partner schools. It will be a floating sustainable
island that will demonstrate positive actions that can take place to
help protect our environment.
