Two Lynwood Police Department members recently visited Lurie

Children’s Hospital of Chicago to personally deliver get-well cards and spend time with pediatric patients.

The get-well cards were designed by Josh Watson, information technology coordinator for Lynwood’s Police, Fire and Emergency Services Departments.

Watson and Deputy Police Chief Terrence Shubert partnered in this endeavor with Cardz for Kidz, a national nonprofit organization that encourages the creation of cards to uplift the spirits of hospitalized children.

Watson created a card and submitted his design to Cardz for Kidz. His card was judged in the top 10 designs out of 2,498 submissions. He is an amateur artist who enjoys drawing.

Watson’s get-well card depicted a superhero on the front with the message “You’re Much Stronger Than You Think You Are.” Inside was a photo of the entire Lynwood police force and signatures by the officers.

At the hospital, Watson drew pictures of superheroes and animals for the children, while Shubert played games with the young patients. They said the intention of their visit was to “bring some joy to kids and their families.”

Shubert said the Cardz for Kidz website address is www.cardzforkidz.org.

Lynwood Little League baseball fields at Lakeview Community Park are undergoing major

upgrades, thanks to the generosity of Curtis Granderson.

Granderson, a member of the New York Mets Major League Baseball team, is funding the following Little League improvements at two of the three fields: new fencing and backstops, new dugout roofs, installation of outfield warning tracks and erection of scoreboards.

The aging fencing and dugout roofs were deteriorating and needed replacement. The baseball fields never had scoreboards.

The Little League season starts May 1, following April practices.

Granderson grew up in Lynwood

and played Lynwood Little League baseball for six years. He was an outstanding high school and college athlete. He set several single-season records as a baseball star at the University of Illinois at Chicago and had the second best national batting average of a college player.

Before joining the New York Mets, Granderson spent six years with the Detroit Tigers and four years with the New York Yankees, playing in the World Series with the Tigers, the Yankees and the 2015 Mets. He was selected as a Major League Baseball All-Star three times.

In addition to his successful baseball career, Granderson has been recognized for his work with and support for youth programs.

Lynwood Community Update | spring 201622

In my position as an officer of the Illinois Municipal League (IML), I have been heavily involved in

the Moving Cities Forward initiative taken recently by the League. Moving Cities Forward is an IML policy agenda that has received media attention throughout the state.

The Illinois budget stalemate continues to place all Illinois communities in a state of financial limbo. One significant and ongoing Moving Cities Forward initiative is securing the timely distribution to local governments of their fair share of revenue such as motor fuel, casino and video gaming taxes collected by the State of Illinois. Local governments rely on the regular and timely distribution of these state-collected tax revenues to fund their operations. It is not a handout - it is your money collected by the state on your behalf.

The Illinois Municipal League is an association representing more

than 1,200 cities and villages. Its work in Springfield on behalf of its members includes proposing changes to legislation that has a negative impact on a local government’s ability to serve its residents. As Lynwood mayor, I believe the IML is a strong voice speaking for Illinois municipalities.

The photograph accompanying my message tells an interesting

Black History Month story. The photo was taken in 1966 when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at the

Robert Taylor Homes during his civil rights crusade in Chicago. I always told people that I had met Dr. King on that day; however, until recently, no one had ever noticed that I was in this photo. Now, fifty years later, a very good friend of mine, Johnny McEwen, brought it to my attention. I have seen this picture a thousand times and I had never before looked beyond the face of Dr. King himself. Thank you Johnny.

Lynwood resident Kahla Peay-West, who is a designer, turned the photo into a remembrance of that eventful day. In the two circles are images of yours truly - five decades ago and today. The framed photo is hanging in the lobby area of Village Hall. As mayor I do feel inspired to help make our community a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family.

Sincerely,

Cycle of sufferingAccording to the Centers for Disease Control,28 million adults are diagnosed annually withchronic sinusitis, resulting in 12 million visitsto the doctor. Physicians treat the symptoms– headache, sinus pressure, facial pain, congestion, sore throat, fatigue – withantibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines.Patients find temporary relief. After a shortreprieve the symptoms return, resulting inanother visit to the clinic and pharmacy.

Revolutionary treatmentAccording to Dr. Sreek Cherukuri, a boardcertified Ear, Nose, and Throat specialistat CarePointe Sinus Center, many of thosesuffering from chronic sinusitis are effectivelytreated with a new office procedure that resultsin lasting relief without the discomfort and riskof major surgery.

“Balloon sinuplasty is a breakthroughprocedure that relieves the pain andpressure associated with chronic sinusitis,”Dr. Cherukuri told the Times. “For selectcandidates, sinuplasty can result in long termrelief. Since it is done in-office, the patientavoids the anesthesia, risks, and downtime oftraditional sinus surgery.”

Minimally invasiveNew patients provide their medical history, andthen receive a thorough examination of thenasal and sinus cavities. Based on the results,a CT scan may be ordered to complete theworkup.

Many patients experience a narrowing of thepathway into the maxillary sinus, while otherssuffer from blockage in the frontal sinus. Bothproblems are treated with a balloon probe thatopens the area without tearing the mucosa.

Fast resultsThe balloon sinuplasty is performed in theoffice under a local anesthetic. That reducesthe risk for patients who have adversereactions to anesthesia.

Post-operative bleeding, pain, and recoverytime are minimal.

“Most patients return to normal activities inone or two days,” Dr. Cherukuri said.

Compared to the ten-day recovery period fromnormal sinus surgery, the difference is nothingshort of revolutionary.

Dr. Cherukuri added that patients do not havethe discomfort of nasal packing.

“Traditional surgery results in nasal packingup to seven days,” he said. “Patients have acertain amount of discomfort from the packing, and the removal process.”

Balloon sinuplasty opens the nasal cavities andallows them to heal properly, eliminating therecurrent infections.

Covered by InsuranceTo date, over 160,000 patients have been treatedsafely and successfully with balloon sinuplasty.Ninety-five percent of patients surveyed weresatisfied with the procedure. Medicare andmost insurances cover the procedure.

“Our patients have been very happy,” he said.“Balloon sinuplasty is not for everyone. But forthose who are good candidates, the results aresignificant and permanent.”

Those suffering from chronic sinusitis nowhave an alternative to the cycle of symptomatictreatment that results in frustration.

For more than three decades, Angie’s Warsaw Inn restaurant in Lynwood has been a diners’

favorite offering its fresh homemade buffet selections.

Owner and operator Angie Golom opened the restaurant in 1980. She has been greeting several generations of returning patrons who enjoy the Polish and American dishes on the extensive buffet. “Guests tell us ‘this is just like my Mom’s cooking’,” Golom said.

Buffet items include soups, salads, ever-popular Polish pierogi dumplings and stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes and blintzes, meat entrees, and a variety of dessert items, such as kolaczki cookies.

“We prepare our food fresh, from scratch,” Golom said. “Our buffet food, including salads, is homemade, not frozen and without preservatives. We make our own Polish sausage and bake our bread and desserts.”

The Warsaw Inn features daily

specials, such as roast duck, fried and baked seafood, barbecue ribs, roast pork loin, and more. The restaurant also offers carry-out meals, catering and is open for occasion lunches.

Restaurant hours are 4 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. Early bird price is offered 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Angie’s Warsaw Inn is located at 2180 Glenwood-Dyer Road. The phone number is 708-474-1000. The restaurant’s website can be accessed at angieswarsawinn.com.

Five members of the Lynwood Emergency Services Depart-ment recently participated in

specialized training for the duties they perform.

The training session covered subjects such as tornado and train derailment response, search and rescue incidents, legal concerns and other topics. Hanover Township sponsored the training program.

Russell L. Pearson,

Emergency Services director, said the Department is seeking volunteers. Emergency Services personnel assist the Police and Fire Departments with traffic control at accidents, fires and other emergency situations. The volunteers also help police with crowd control and safety patrols at festivals and other special events.

Additional information or an application is available by phoning 708-935-5862.

The Lynwood Fire Department now has 14 state-of-the-art digital radios with computer

software for use in emergency operations.

Fire Chief John Cobb said the radios can automatically track firefighters operating in fire incidents, notify the firefighters when to evacuate, and allows firefighters to better communicate with personnel in command vehicles.

The new equipment was acquired with funding from a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant and 9-1-1 emergency telephone fees. The radio technology was developed following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The radios are designed for ease of operation by firefighters, featuring louder speakers, more convenient control, emergency

lighting, multi-band operation, and the automatic firefighter accountability system, Chief Cobb said.

The radio-computer firefighter accountability system is compatible with member Fire Departments in Lynwood’s regional firefighting division, as well as fire agencies operating on the same radio band in Illinois and Indiana.

BODY CAMERAS FOR RESPONDERSLynwood Emergency Services Department volunteer Dave Harned points to a body camera attached to his uniform. The Emergency Services Department has initiated the body camera program because Emergency Services volunteers have at times been subjected to verbal abuse and threats while fulfilling their responsibilities to keep people safe. The body cameras worn by responding personnel will be used in conjunction with camera systems installed in Emergency Services vehicles.

What is storm water?Storm water is rain, hail or

melting snow that drains into a municipal storm drainage system, such as catch basins, sewer basin and drainage swales, eventually flowing to a wetland or body of water such as a lake, stream, river or creek. The Village of Lynwood’s storm drainage system flows into Lake Lynwood, Lincoln Lansing Drainage, North Creek and West Creek.

Why be concerned about storm drain pollution?

Since storm drains collect storm water that flows into Lake Lynwood and the Lincoln Lansing Drainage Ditch, pollution in catch basins will pollute our local bodies of water. Pollutants impact our groundwater, wetlands and waterways, contaminating drinking water and endangering the health of people, fish and other wildlife. By keeping our catch basins and drainage swales uncontaminated, we keep the environment of Lynwood clean.

What should you do if you suspect a storm drain is being polluted?

If you see pollutants entering our drainage system or see someone dumping into a storm basin, please phone the Lynwood Public Works Department at 708-758-8434.

Branch pickup serviceThe Public Works Department

will collect branches twice a month on even numbered Fridays.

For safety reasons, branches should be at least 48 inches in length. Branches shorter than four feet are considered yard waste and will not be picked up. Smaller branches should be cut up and placed with twigs in biodegradable bags for the weekly Homewood Disposal yard waste collection. The Public Works Department can safely chip branches up to 15 inches in diameter.

Branch piles will not be collected for chipping if other matter is mixed in. Metal and other debris in branch piles can damage Public Works equipment and/or cause injury to a Village employee.

Dogs on leash ordinanceThe Village is enforcing an

ordinance regarding dogs due to numerous complaints that people

are walking their dogs without a leash in Village parks and not cleaning up after pets.

The Lynwood ordinance requires that dogs must be leashed and that owners must have the necessary supplies to pick up after dogs and must do so. Tickets will be issued to pet owners who violate the ordinance requiring dog leashes and pet cleanup. Residents who see violators are asked to contact the Police Department.

Holiday trash schedule Homewood Disposal, the

Village’s garbage, yard waste and recycling service provider, observes the following six holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. When a holiday occurs prior to garbage pickup day, collection will be delayed one day. If a holiday occurs on a Saturday, Homewood Disposal will observe it on the prior Friday. If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the firm observes it on the following Monday.

Yard waste collectionHomewood

Disposal Company will collect yard waste as part of its weekly trash pickup. Yard waste must be placed in the yard waste container rented from Homewood Disposal or in paper biodegradable bags. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be collected.

No electronics, tire pickup

Homewood Disposal Company will not pick up electronics, including televisions, computers,

monitors, stereos, and other

devices. Residents must discard them at area electronics recyclers. Also, tires will not be collected by the disposal firm; they must be taken to local tire stores that accept used tires.

Credit, debit card payment of Village utilities bills

Residents may use Discover, MasterCard and American Express credit cards to pay municipal

utilities bills, both online and at the Village Clerk’s office.

Lynwood uses the Illinois Fund E-PAY system for the electronic payment services. A convenience fee is charged. For online payment there is a sliding scale fee depending on the amount charged. A 2.1% fee is charged on credit or debit card payments at the Village Clerk’s office. The Village does not receive the fees; they are paid to the credit card companies. To make an online payment, residents should visit the Village website at www.lynwoodil.us and access the E-Pay link.
