Barry taught 34 years in Spring Grove Area School District and during his tenure, he was involved in the athletic program in Spring Grove for almost 40 seasons as either head coach, assistant coach, or scout. Barry scouted several basketball games for Coach Gary Miller, served as high school basketball assistant coach for two years, and head coach for one year.

Barry was also the assistant baseball coach for two years, and then moved up to head coach for six years, compiling a record of over 50 wins and 36 losses. He was fortunate to be the head coach when Jeff Palmer threw a perfect game against Northeastern in 1975. In addition to his involvement in Spring Grove baseball, he helped start the Legion Baseball Program in Spring Grove and was the manager of the Glen Rock Legion Baseball Team.

Barry’s longest term was with the Spring Grove golf team, serving as the head coach for over 20 years. His teams won two County Cham-pionships, over 200 matches, sent many players to the District Golf Tournament, and sent at least five to the State Tournament. In the 2000 PIAA Girls Championship Tournament, his golfer, Whitney Myers, finished second with a score of 150 for two rounds.

His passion for golf also led him to co-found the York Invitational Golf Tournament, which invited the best teams from the Central Pennsylvania area to a one-day tournament at Briarwood Golf Club. Many of the golfers invited received scholarships to play golf in college, so it was always an invitation that teams cherished.

Barry was recognized for his outstanding service in the golf community by the York Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association, voted Man of the Year in 1986, and elected to a lifetime membership with the York County Amateur Golf Association in 1989. A year later, he was voted into the York County Golf Hall of Fame.

Tom was the junior high football coach from 1968-1970, high school assistant coach from 1970-1971, and the high school head coach from 1972-1990. His career record was 119-59-7. He lead his teams to Division and League Champi-onships in 1975, 1976, 1977, 1983, and 1986.

District Football Playoffs were not yet implemented in the 1970’s, but in 1975, the Rockets showed their tenacity by breaking Red Lion’s 34-game winning streak. Tom received a letter from Spring Grove Mayor, Richard A. Thieret, congratulating him and the team. They made it to District Playoffs in 1983, but lost to Lancaster Catholic. The team of 1986 did not qualify for District Playoffs due to the teachers’ union strike that shortened the season to seven games. However, they finished 6-1 and were Division Champions that year. After stepping down from his position as head coach, Tom came back to volunteer as an assistant to head coach, Gregg Trone.
