Six tips on your manners and behavior

1. Make profound use of 3 divine words "please", "sorry", “ thank you" as

much as you can. This would help make your progress a tad bit easy.

2. Always keep eyes and ears open but open your mouth only when

necessary; be receptive rather than being reactive as much as possible.

3. We have to keep in mind that there is no teacher-student relationship

anywhere, so we are responsible our own actions and the effect it would

cause.

4. It would be good if the Newcomers have a problem-solving approach rather

than succumbing to the problem. (Only when necessary)

5. We need to be collaborative during work. Try to understand the manner in

which existing people in your team tend to work.

6. Sixth one , keep yourself presentable at all times because you may never

know who would get impressed by you and when everyone is watching you

no matter where you go.

Need of sound knowledge & good grades 1. Employability does not depend upon a degree alone .

2. Organization are continually changing or evolving. Candidates with

just a degree in any of the engineering discipline are not really fit to

be placed by an organization.

3. Because curriculum is not relevant to changing technology and

business environment

4. To overcome such a situation all those who complete degree

courses must have

1. Good grades

2. And capabilities by acquiring knowledge of evolving

technologies in the selected domain of engineering.

5. These two alone can give an edge over the others and increase

your employability chances

How to shape own Career

Depending on area of interest

• It is very necessary that you have a clear idea –won’t say a dream –

on where you want to be in immediate and near future

• You need to have not only interest but passion for the technology

you select as engineering discipline.

• Such an interests makes you work for better grades and inspire you

to update your knowledge for the domain of technology

• Develop the habit of learning continually

• This is a very important aspect of your career management

Page 10: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

Higher education in India v/s abroad

• The educational environment in India is not in pace with

– the ever evolving technologies ,

– tools and trends in conducting business operations

across the globe.

• The global boundaries are ever shrinking. That affects

business here in India too.

• Unfortunately the education patterns here do not match

these changes, forget about keeping ahead.

Page 11: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

Technology Education in US • In the United States, Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago (IIT-C),

is a reputed private, not-for-profit, Ph.D.-granting 1st Tier Research

university

• It was established in Chicago in 1890.

• It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs in engineering,

science, psychology, architecture.

• It also offers graduate (post-graduate) programs in business, design

and law.

• Along with other private universities such as MIT, Carnegie Mellon

and 20 more, IIT –C is a member of Association of Independent

Technological Universities (AITU).

Page 12: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

How to chose good schools in USA or other countries

• What one must look for is the standing of an university or institution

• These are conducted in a survey by well known organizations and

• The other survey useful will be what is rating on placement and

remunerations the students from a particular university gets.

• One more point to consider is the range of alumni form an

Institution of University

– Contribution technology or business systems

– Awards for research or new inventions

Page 13: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

The USA education system• The education system is one of the most expansive in the world,

with approximately 4,000 universities on offer.

• These universities can be divided into two types:

• Private universities - are maintained by tuition fees and private

donations. They usually have fewer students and are more

expensive to attend, but often have state-of-the-art facilities and

more funding for international students.

• Public universities - are funded by the state and contain large

numbers of students. Tuition fees are less expensive but

international students pay out-of-state tuition, which is often

expensive.

• It is important to note that in the USA, universities are known as

colleges and postgraduate degrees are called graduate degrees.

Page 14: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

THE CREDIT SYSTEM

• American degrees, both undergraduate and graduate, are earned on the basis of the number of courses successfully taken.

• Each course earns “credits” or “units”, which are known as credit hours, semester hours (for schools on the semester system), or merely hours or credits.

• The number of credits earned by each course relates to the number of hours of classroom work involved, but does not necessarily correspond exactly.

• For instance, a course meeting three times a week for an hour (actually 50 minutes) each time may be expected to give a student three hours credit for the semester or term.

• On the other hand, an intensive seminar may meet once a week for two hours and also be a three-credit hours course. Two or three laboratory periods are usually considered to be equivalent to one class “hour”.

Page 15: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

Selecting an Institution • If one decides to study in the United States, one should always

choose an institution which is “accredited.”

• An accredited institution means that its program of study,

professors, and academic facilities meet the minimum standards

established by an agency recognized by the Council on

Postsecondary Accreditation and by the U.S. Department of

Education

• Accreditation by a professional agency applies only to the relevant

school or department; e.g., engineering schools are accredited by

the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.

• The rating decides the level of remuneration levels applicants could

be placed

Page 16: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

Student visas• Before applying for a visa you must be accepted and

approved for your program of study. You will then be

sent the necessary documentation to start the visa

process.

• It is best to apply early and you will also need to make

an appointment for a visa interview with the US embassy

in your country.

• The F-1 student visa is for those wishing to study full

time at an accredited US college or university.

• For a complete guide visit the US Department of State -

Student Visas

Page 17: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

Why Masters program?• BE or equivalent is now an entry level qualification in any

technology organization

• Masters program helps professionals to get insight into the

specialized area

• Masters program thus enables differentiating your career profile for

progression in career and to sustain employability

• On line Master's program from IIT Chicago is comprehensive and

very convenient for a professional wishing to enhance

employability while engaged in professional work

• The online approach allows you to fit study time around other

events in your life

• The International Master's degree from a well ranked university like

IIT Chicago will definitely boost your career graph

• A cost effective option is beneficial in long run

Page 18: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

Job prospects abroad / India

• This heartening to know!

• “There are some areas like science and technology and research and development (R&D), where it is inevitable to recruit Indians”

– Dirk Messelaar, Dean of the University of Massachusetts.

Page 19: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

After the Masters programThere are three options here for you to consider-

• Get a job, and work for which you will need a work

visa(H1B in the US).

• Continue on with your studies and get a higher degree (a

Phd).

• Returning to India.

• Option 4 – Marry American Citizen

Page 20: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

Finding a Job After Masters• Getting a job is what most Indians really go to the US to study for, but

is not as easy as it used to be

• Getting a H1-B also isn’t easy. The applicants themselves cant apply

for a work visa directly. The employer needs to apply on their behalf

• There aren’t that many jobs which narrows down your search for

employers who are ready to sponsor an H1B

• And to add to that you have a limited time to do that.

• Most companies who hire in job fairs, hire only US citizens or green

card holders

• International students need to entirely depend on references from

their professors or rely on professional networking to get a job, or

even an internship.

• The OPT program, after you finish your studies, offers you a 3 month

window to search for a job. If you cant, then you simply pack up and

leave.

Page 21: Spring presntation at Colleges Sangli v2 final

Some tips • An example: You go to the US to get a

masters in VLSI and want a career as a VLSI engineer, you will find openings for your level of experience if

only you are really worth hiring or

you have lots of references within the industry.

• So be industry specific and have skills like communication and innovation and networking
