It is one of the reasons dogs make great companions for people suffering from PTSD. Similar facts regarding dogs visiting children and the elderly in hospitals or rehab centers seem to show they help promote the healing process. Even the simple act of walking your dog is a health benefit. It promotes social interaction, not just for you but for your dog too. Have you ever noticed people are friendlier when you walk by, they actually smile or start a conversation which in most cases they wouldn’t even acknowledge you. Studies have also shown parents believe that pets are an essential part of the family and it is important for their children to grow up with pets. They provide structure in your life. No matter what your mood is, you know your pet needs you to feed, exercise and care for them. There have been many studies that show children growing up with furry animals will have less risk of allergies and asthma. For elderly people who are able, just caring for a pet can provide exercise and companionship. It has been found pet owners over 65 make fewer visits to their doctors than those without. They can help you find new joy in your life and just make you take better care of yourself thus creating a longer and happier life. All these things and more they do for us daily without ever asking for a new car, phone, clothes, etc. Their unconditional love is apparent everyday. Even those with physical disabilities or ones that are getting older, loosing their eyesight or hearing, or having a hard time getting up for that special walk, they never complain. They just keep on giving their all to us for that kind touch or look. So for them everyday …. life is good.

Spring/Summer 2014

Animal Rescue League of El Paso is a No-Kill Shelter and a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization.

As the saying goes….life is good! After a morning of play these Animal Rescue doggies all sacked out together. The same can be said for our cats. It is amazing to see these beautiful creatures enjoy life even without a forever home yet. But as most of you reading this know “life is good” for us humans as well when we invite these awesome creatures into our home. The difference they make in our lives is amazing. The fact is they never judge us, never have a bad day and are always happy to see us. These are just a few of the reasons these

beautiful creatures fill and fulfil our lives. There are actual facts related to the health benefits of having a pet companion. They keep us healthier and make us better people. We are more compassionate toward all living creatures because of them. Although much like human relationships they are a mix of love, worry, joy and frustration, all the while making us find ways to improve their lives as well as ours. Studies have shown just petting a dog or cat can reduce blood pressure and also decrease levels of cortisol, a hormone related to stress and anxiety. In the “Spot” Light!

Animal Rescue’s Spotlight focuses on two dogs that were recently

adopted after being at ARL for a while. Brandie was originally from

another rescue and graduated from the Sheriff’s department PAWS

program. Brandie is a

pretty big girl and the

training from the PAWS

program is just what she

needed. She was a little

picky with others dogs and

really did not like cats.

Unfortunately being such a large dog she needed a

family that could and would be able to handle her.

Her new family said Brandie loves her walks and

flushing out the bunnies, but no bunnies harmed!

She had no problem with her potty training, she

takes corrections very well and they love wrestling with her and how gentle she can be. But she

really really loves her walks. We are so happy Brandie finally found her real forever home. Thank

you so much Brandie’s family for welcoming her into your life.

Adele was found as a stray. By the looks of it she had

a rough time, she had a major scar on her front right

side. She probably never had a real loving home but

was eager to please. That’s why ARL thought she

would be a great candidate for the PAWS program.

She did great thus making her even more adoptable. It

may have taken a while for the right family to come

along, but Adele is proving to have been a great fit. Her

first night home Adele was already making herself at

home on the family couch. Something Adele never

experienced before. She keeps a close eye on her

“little person” and seems to have adapted to her new family very well. Animal Rescue is just so

happy to know our Adele is finally happy with a forever loving family.

Our reflection garden is growing! ARL started the garden to memorialize/honor pets and animal lovers alike. Money raised will go towards caring for the current animals at our shelter. The bricks have been placed in the courtyard at Animal Rescue League to

create the garden. Please come by anytime to see the dedications.

Animal Rescue League’s 2014’s “Dinner With Friends was a huge success. We want to thank everyone

involved. The date is set for next year already, so keep May 2, 2015 open to attend another great event.

Cesar Millan in El Paso! Cesar Millan brought his new show to El Paso in March. Cesar is known as the “Dog Whisperer” but his new show focuses on how to teach the human in regards with handling your dog. Animal Rescue League was fortunate to be part of his program. ARL brought several dogs for Cesar to meet and decide which ones he would use during his program. It was so much fun to interact and talk with Cesar again. Back in 2005 Animal Rescue brought Cesar to El Paso for his seminar. In addition Cesar came out

to our shelter and helped us with some of our harder to adopt dogs.

A No Kill Rescue Organization Our mission is to serve stray, abandoned, orphaned, abused and injured companion animals by providing medical care and shelter in times of need, locating lifelong homes, and promoting responsible pet guardianship through education, legislation and sterilization.

“Someone else’s trash turns out to be our treasure” Rescuing is not an easy job. People ask all the time, “how can you do this job for so long?” Adopting these thrown out animals is what helps to keep the faith in rescuing. We have been fortunate to work with the PAWS In Detention Program at the El Paso County Sheriff’s

department. Sheriff Wiles along with Lt. Hebeker were instrumental in starting this program. The program gives the inmates a chance to learn new job skills. The program trains inmates to take care of these dogs and teach them basic obedience. These dogs have been thrown out like the trash and now are getting a second chance. Recently two of our dogs have graduated and now have become therapy/service dogs. The new guardians are so proud of them and show them off to everyone. They’re just a couple examples of our treasures.
