So there I sat at the intersection waiting to turn left. I had the misfortune of being the first vehicle

at the light. Therefore I had a front row, and way-too-close-up, seat to the action. The disheveled man darted across the street and took up his post on the median to take advantage of all the cars stopped at the red light. He previously had been stationed at the corner, but when that light turned green and cars drove off he targeted the cars at the red light in the left-hand turn lane. Yawning, bare foot, sporting a full leg tattoo and smoking a cigarette, the 20-something degenerate must have imagined himself something of a marketing genius. For his cardboard sign didn’t have the usual “hungry, out of work” type message. No this guy was an original. His sign said “Dropped off by an alien, need a taco.” As I did my best to ignore him, “don’t make eye contact” is a motto we frequently live by, I couldn’t help but compare the activities of my day to his and his unkempt lazy partners who were stationed at every median in the intersection. At my desk at 6:45 that morning, I pushed hard on the deadline for this issue, knowing that at 1:45 I had to make a mad dash to town (two hour round trip) to do banking, groceries and get birthday supplies for the 10-year-old, be back in time to pick

her up by 6, prepare a super fast easy dinner, spend an hour of family time and then back at the computer until at least midnight, the same quitting time I’d had the previous night. But this guy who hasn’t

worked in who knows how long, maybe never, wants me to give him money for a taco. I don’t think so. I have nothing against helping people in need. We regularly

do that. We have devoted thousands of hours in the last few years to providing an off road camping adventure for kids who come from disadvantaged homes. What I do have a problem with is helping people who are not helping themselves. At all. For instance the taco-loving alien. I was outraged when the car behind me handed the guy some money. Let’s just encourage the “I-don’t-need-to-work-I’ll-just-beg-money-from-the-people-who-do-work” ethic, why don’t we?! While in the process of helping kids from at-risk homes at a Thundering Trails camp

a few years ago I personally witnessed the concept of socialism and what a huge failure it is. In fact it was my own misguided idealism that caused the entire situation. Whenever we have a camp that falls near Easter we do an Easter Egg hunt for the kids. The boys love these hunts as much as the girls. It can be challenging to hide a

few hundred eggs without 12 rowdy kids knowing what you’re doing. Since many of them are candy-filled and its getting fairly warm in the desert around that time they can’t be put out before the kids arrive at camp. So usually I’m up super early on Sunday morning (and that’s after

getting to bed around 1 or 2 a.m. because I was up late working on the camp poster) and I go to a part of the property where I don’t think they’ll see me if they happen to be early risers. When the time came for the hunt during this particular boys’ camp I wanted to make sure the eggs would be split fairly among them when the hunt was over. So I came up with what I thought was a great idea. I told the boys that there were enough eggs for each one of them to get 21 eggs. “You can find as many as you want, but after the hunt, be

sure to count your eggs and if you have more than 21, share with someone who didn’t get as many.” Sounded like such a wonderful idea. Until I saw how a few of the boys implemented that plan. We were only minutes into the great Easter Egg Hunt of 2013 when I witnessed first-hand exactly why socialism, or being “fair” to everyone, does not work. Anthony was super excited

about the hunt and he took off like gangbusters and stayed on high speed the entire hunt, he found more eggs than anyone and seemed to be having a fun time doing it. He didn’t pass a single bush without checking to see if

there was a colorful plastic eggs hidden in the depths of it. While a couple of other obviously very unmotivated boys sauntered along hardly even glancing at the bushes they slowly passed by. And if they didn’t feel like trying hard, what difference did it make? They were going to get 21 eggs each even if they didn’t put forth the effort to find a single egg. Yet Anthony who’s face was glistening with sweat as he gave 110% effort in the heat of the day would have to give up the majority of the eggs he found. All because I thought the division of eggs should be fair Socialism. It does not work. Neither do half of the people who believe in it. E

Keep Fighting the Wack JobsHello! I was on my first wedding anniversary (Dec 12-20) in Escondido. Loved the area. Had great food, toured Deer Park Museum and went to the zoo. But the most fun was talking with Bruce and Winnie Meyers (Manx Club) in Valley Center and then heading out to Ocotillo Wells to see some buggies and check out the “Cal Desert.” Way Cool! Met some great people at Ironwoods and they took us for a two hour ride into the desert. Thank you Dawn and friends! Please find $20 enclosed for a Christmas subscription special! I’m looking for a fiberglass body for my 1984 Chenowth rail. Hood and side panels. Also John Johnson racing adapters, Panzer brackets, Jackman wheels 5=lug VW aluminum or steel and Hella Ralley 2000 lights. May I list what I need in your classified section?Thank you,Dave IbachWellsboro PAP.S. Great magazine! allowing modified vehicles built in 1982 and earlier.

The idea of the class is to allow more racers to bring out their vintage off-road vehicles and race. After

last year’s hugely successful launch of the Vintage Class, The Martelli Brothers and Casey Folks of Best In the Desert decided to open the rules and allow more vintage vehicles to race. “There are a lot of really cool vintage off-road race vehicles out there that are still

capable of racing. After class steward Norm ‘Hot Rod’ Francis approached us with the idea, we thought it would be a great way to celebrate the history of The Mint 400 by creating a new Open Class that allows modified vehicles beginning in 1982 and earlier to come race. The large majority of vintage off-road vehicles have had some sort of modification,” stated Mint 400 CEO,

Matt Martelli. For more information go to www.themint400.com/ For racer registration go to www.bitd.com

Off-Road racing legend Rod Hall will also return to The Mint 400 as Grand Marshal and will lead the 4 Wheel Parts Mint 400 Vehicle Parade on Wednesday, March 9th in his newly restored 1969 BFG Ford Bronco. Originally built by legendary race car builder Bill Stroppe, Hall piloted the BFG Bronco to an overall win at the 1969 Mexican 1000 (The predecessor to the Baja 1000). The BFG Bronco will be on display at the BFGoodrich Tires booth during Contingency on Friday, March 11th. E

The EPA Will Make It Illegal For You To Convert Your Car Into A RacecarBy Michael BastaschPosted February 9, 2016

First they came for coal plants, then natural gas drilling and now the Environmental Protection Agency

(EPA) wants to make it illegal for people to convert your car into a race car — all in the name of fighting global warming, of course. Last year, EPA proposed new global warming regulations for vehicle emissions that effectively ban converting vehicles made for on-road use into race cars. The EPA will also make it illegal to buy or sell certain car parts used in race car conversion. “This proposed regulation represents overreaching by the agency, runs contrary to the law and defies decades of racing activity where EPA has acknowledged and allowed conversion of vehicles,” Chris Kersting, the president of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), said in a statement. SEMA specifically asked the EPA if its global warming rules would ban race car conversions, and the agency confirmed this to be true. The news has racing hobbyists livid. “Congress did not intend the original Clean Air Act to extend to vehicles modified for racing and has re-enforced that intent on more than one occasion,” Kersting said. For years, President Barack Obama has pushed more regulations related to fuel

economy and carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles as part of his effort to fight global warming. Obama’s latest round of vehicle regulations, proposed in October, sets standards for medium- and heavy-duty engines. “By the middle of the next decade, the cars and trucks we buy will go twice as far on a gallon of gas,” Obama said in a 2013 speech. “That means you’ll have to fill up half as often; we’ll all reduce carbon pollution.” But Obama’s vehicle regulations are projected to have an almost immeasurable impact on future global warming — based on the very same climate models used by the government to estimate the efficacy of CO2 regulations. “In other words, EPA’s own analysis concedes that the model noise is greater than the model signal. This is indisputable proof that the impacts are statistically insignificant,” climate scientists Patrick Michaels and Chip Knappenberger with the libertarian Cato Institute wrote in regulatory comments to the EPA last year. “Further, if the model noise represents real world noise, then this is also indisputable proof that the ‘affect’ will be undetectable and thus unverifiable,” Michaels and Knappenberger wrote. “And further still, no one could argue that averting 0.003°C of a projected 3.48°C of global warming… would have any ecologically significant impacts in the real world.” Furthermore, low gas prices have frustrated Obama’s fuel efficiency ambitions. A study by University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute found that fuel economy of new cars sold in 2015 was lower in 2014. This is all due to cheap gasoline. “When gasoline is cheap, the motivation just isn’t there for consumers to pay a whole lot of attention to fuel economy,” Brandon Schoettle, a UM researcher, told NPR. The EPA did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Here’s How States Can Defy The EPA’s Global Warming PlanBy Andrew FollettPosted February 12, 2016

In the wake of a major Supreme Court decision, a free market energy group is encouraging state governments to not

comply with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) global warming rules.

The U.S. Supreme Court halted the EPA’s Clean Power Plan (CPP) from being implemented in a 5-4 vote Tuesday — so the court has a chance to rule on its legality down the road. In response to the ruling, the American Energy Alliance mailed out “stop work” orders to all state governors and regulators, asking them not to submit compliance plans to the EPA. “This ‘Stop Work’ approach is the best way for state leaders to protect their citizens from the higher energy costs and job losses that this unlawful regulation would undoubtedly cause,” Thomas Pyle, president of the American Energy Alliance, said in a statement Friday. “As a country, we should focus on ways to make electricity more affordable, not on implementing regulations that will raise energy costs, which hit the poor and middle class the hardest.” The CPP requires states to drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the

energy sector. The rule is expected to result in the closure of coal-fired power plants across the country. Even EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy admits the court ruling stalls the CPP’s implementation. McCarthy, however, encouraged states to continue working on CPP compliance plans despite the unresolved legal issues. McCarthy says she “remains fully confident in the legal merits of this rule,” and claims the Supreme Court’s stay “doesn’t mean they spoke to the merits” of the CPP. This is great news for the 29 states suing the federal government to stop the CPP, which asked the Supreme Court to halt implementation after a lower court rejected their appeal in January.

“The [CPP] illegally forces states to overhaul their energy portfolio and does so without congressional authority, costing countless jobs, increasing electricity prices and jeopardizing energy reliability,” Patrick Morrisey, the West Virginia attorney general who has led the legal battle, said in a statement from late January. “Without Supreme Court intervention, West Virginia and other states [would have suffered] irreparable harm as job creators and state agencies spend untold resources to comply with a rule that is likely to be struck down as illegal.” E

CarveacreThere is controversy surounding

Carveacre Road in the Cleveland National Forest in San Diego

County. This is a dirt road that goes from Lyons Valley Road up Mount Lawson. Some people know the top area as Pancake Rock. The San Diego 4 Wheelers have held a run up this hill for decades where they make pancakes for everyone. I found out a few months ago that the gate at the beginning of Carveacre has been locked. Locked by the city of San Diego, who just happens to own the first few hundred yards of the trail, because the trail is “dangerous.” The Cleveland is going through a process to close various routes in the forest that have been identified on the ground, but are not in the system. What they are doing is looking at the routes for reasons that would prevent them from making them legal. The reasons might be that they go through wilderness, are in or too close to wetlands or run through areas with biological or archaeological resources. I don't have a problem with this. If there is a reason to close a route that is backed by sound science, so be it. A year ago the forest started this process with scoping and identified various routes they intend to close. A few months ago the forest published the draft of what they want to do. Again they want to close various routes found, but surprise, they want to open a few by adding them to their inventory so 1.2 miles will be opened. What was a surprise to us is that they want to formally close their part of Carveacre Road, about 1.4 miles or most of it. When a federal agency goes through a process like this, called NEPA or National Environmental Policy Act, they are required to take comments. While the comment period was open, we invited the person from the Cleveland National Forest in charge of this action to come to an SDORC meeting. Josh Heys came to our meeting to field questions. I heard through my friend John Elliot that a woman from the Sierra Club is interested in keeping this trail open. You can imagine how I feel about a Sierra Clubber, but if they share my feelings on a topic, who am I to complain? So we invited Cindy to the meeting and peppered Josh with questions about the planned closure. A few days before the comment period ended I sat down to write my comments and when I went to open

the draft plan on the Cleveland website, the page didn't work! I thought I might have missed the deadline. I have seen agencies close their website the minute the comment period ends. So I wrote comments from memory, as I had read the draft plan a week before, and emailed them in. That was a Sunday night, Monday was Martin Luthur King day so Tuesday I called Josh to find out

what happened to the website. He said he was as frustrated as I was, maybe more. Josh emailed me the draft plan so I could submit additional comments. (you can submit as many comments as you like during the comment period) Tuesday night, the last night of the comment period I got to work. I limited my comments to Carveacre Road and started out with this "First, I want to ask

the forest why the proposed action website page has gone down at least three days before the comments are due? Many people wait to near the end of comment periods to submit comments. It is as though the forest knows closing Carveacre Road is controversial and they are making it much more difficult for people to submit comments.” I pointed out a number of things, like just eight years ago the forest went through Travel Management where they evaluated all routes in the forest and only put the “good” ones into inventory. Fifty-year-old Carveacre passed then, so why is it neccesary to close it now? What has changed? The forest mentions safety, fire danger and biological resources as reasons they need to close it. Safety is never a reason to close OHV trails. Everyone (including courts) knows OHV can be dangerous and we assume the risk when we do it. Fire danger? OHV's in the forest are supposed to have spark arresters. If they are afraid of someone lighting a fire up there, how is that different for any other route? Are there new biological resourses since Travel Management? I asked these questions in my comments, knowing that they are not good reasons to close the road. The draft plan says the forest consulted a number of organizations and agencies when it was working on this plan. I pointed out that SDORC was never consulted, even though the plan directly affects our members, that SDORC commented at the

scoping phase and SDORC commented at length at Travel Management. The forest mentions they are using a State restoration grant to evaluate and close these routes. I mentioned in my comments that I read and commented on grants and there was no mention of closing Carveacre Road there. I contacted the State Grant manager to ask about changing the scope of a grant after it was awarded. I am waiting to hear what he has to say. I commented that the forest owns land down to Lyons Valley Road just a short distance from the closed gate. I said the forest could cut a new road from Lyons Valley to where their portion of Carveacre begins and could control the entire length. I said that if that is hard to pay for, SDORC would be happy to apply for a grant to help pay for this. SDORC has grant experience, having recently received a $10,000 grant from Polaris to hire a lobbyist. There is grant money available from a number of sources, especially when it comes to saving a trail from closure. If you comment at the draft stage and don't get what you want at the final stage, you can protest. If you still don't get what you want, you then have standing to file a lawsuit. We have found a lawyer who wants to work with us on this and we are starting by giving the forest a Freedom of Information Act request for info on Carveacre Road. It will be interesting to see how the forest reacts to our and other commenter's input. Following is the last paragragh from my comments. “The forest response to comments about the closing of Carveacre Road reads like it is rationalizing this action after it has already decided to close it. Safety, fire and biological sound reasonable, but didn't cause it to be closed during Travel Management and don't add up to justify closing it now. If the cost of managing is too high, come to SDORC to get help with obtaining grants. The practice of management by closure is infuriating to users. The forest needs to manage the forest for the users, not from the users.”

Obama Creates MonumentsYou may have heard that Obama

created three national monuments in the California desert February

12th. This probably won’t have a large impact to OHV in those areas, but there is still a big problem with it. Negotiations have been going on for some time to do this and much more with legislation. The bills, carried by Feinstein and Congressman Cook, would have made these same monuments, but would have done a variety of other actions. The most important is it would have made five BLM OHV open areas national OHV recreation areas. This was our golden opportunity to make these areas much stronger. Right now, these areas are open because the BLM management plans allow it. Should an endangered species or other valuable “resource” come along, these areas could be in trouble. Obama has used the Antiquities Act to make these designations, completely cutting out congress and local government in the process. Well,

not completely cutting out congress, as Senator Diane Feinstein asked the president to do this, even though she was also working on a legislative solution to this. This is sad for off-road leaders who worked inside the system for many months to try to get good bills passed to do this and more. This really shows that for OHV to survive, we need friendly legislators in office at all levels of government. There is a primary election coming this June and a number of off-road friendly candidates are running for office in east San Diego county. Assemblyman Brian Jones is running for State Senate, State Senator Joel Anderson is running for San Diego County Supervisor, Congressman Duncan Hunter for Congress and his chief of district staff, Mike Harrison is running for State assembly. These four individuals are very off-road friendly and will need your vote and support. Besides voting for them, you can donate money and volunteer to help their campaigns. Offer to put yard signs up, walk precincts or make phone calls. SDORC is having bumper stickers made that say “Off-Roaders for Harrison Assembly.” Look for them in shops and proudly display them on your vehicles. Saving our sport can be incremental, doing little things regularly to help. Please go to these candidates websites and Facebook pages and see what you can do.

News FlashAs this issue is going to print,

the Cleveland National Forest released the final environmental

assessment for the route closing project that includes our beloved Carveacre Road. In the assessment, they have continued to close Carveacre Road. As I type this, the link to the forest information is broken. The publication of the final environmental assessment triggers a 45 day protest period. This period will end 45 days after February 12th. You can be assured that I will be protesting, along with some other like minded people. If you submitted comments on this in January, you are allowed to file a protest, and I encourage each of you to do so. The link to the final EA is http://www.fs.fed.us/nepa/nepa_project_exp.php?project=43836 - Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link “URD_objection legal notice (PDF 210kb)” for information on how to protest. Tell them the resources they say are being damaged are not, that fire hazard is no more there than anywhere else in the forest and that because a route may be considered dangerous is no reason to close it. Look at the Rubicon Trail, famous for being dangerous and difficult. E

I've always attempted to inform people that the answers to their health issues is not always drugs, more drugs,

then surgery. The article I’m reprinting a portion of points out the real and current dangers of LEGAL, prescription drugs that many an MD prescribes for back pain, neck pain, headaches, hypertension, stress, high cholesterol, numbness, tingling, and pains shooting down the arms or legs. I'm not writing about real medical emergencies here that require immediate medical evaluation and treatment.Nope! I was in Kaiser the last year for a routine over all physical examination. I have written about this subject before but I left out some important details. So, since I had not had a complete physical exam in years and I'm in my late 50's now, I figured I should follow through. I mean the full check up! I figured as I'm the one always preaching prevention, it was time for me to walk the talk! Up the rear and all, to screen for colon cancer. Oh boy! But, I went through the entire medical exam and on the follow up visit the MD told me “You are like a teenager but for your worn out motocross knees!” I told the Doc, “I can get new knees and hips, the replacements are decent these days and have been for a few decades already. But no one makes new spines or nerves, can't get those Doc!” He gave me a blank stare. I told the Doc, “I’ve been getting adjusted about one time per month by a chiropractor since I was 18 years old and that was the last time I had a medical physical as well, about 40 years ago. Here Doc, take a look at my own spinal X-Rays from 6 months ago I brought in with me for you to see and you can see there is no arthritis in my spine anywhere, 95% clean, even with 48 plus years of riding dirt bikes and motocross. And arthritis runs big time in my own family’s genetics!” The MD just gave me a blank stare. So I asked him “Hey Doc, what do you do with people who come in with back or neck pain or headaches?” He told me that he just sends them out for medications or X-Rays if needed and

if the medication does not work or the pain comes back they might prescribe a stronger or different medication or send them out to physical therapy. He had NEVER sent any one of his patients to see a chiropractor, ever and did not know what they do or can do. He had never been to one himself. Imagine having a

medical doctor that had never been to a dentist, ever? Wow! So, I looked straight at the MD and said “Hey Doc, if a patient came into see you with a toothache, would you send them to the pharmacy or would you send them to a dentist?” He just gave me that blank stare again. Oh well. That is too bad for all the folks that come in to see just this one MD, as they will all be told to go take drugs for two to four weeks and if the pain is still there, come back and they will get another, stronger drug, maybe get sent out to physical

therapy. Those patients of his will never hear the words “Maybe you should go see a chiropractor for two to four weeks and see if you make any progress without drugs, for your headaches, back and neck pains and here is a prescription for pain, muscle spasm and inflammation to get you by and give you some relief in the short term.”

The statistics reveal (Health Grades, 2006) that 97% of all visits to an MD result in being referred to the pharmacy. Those 97% will NEVER be recommended to try another form of non-drug treatment, including at least chiropractic. That should be a crime in my opinion or at least malpractice for not informing the patients of ALL their options. If a person came in to see me, the DC and they had a broken bone, cancer or an infection and I did not send them immediately out to a medical doctor, that would be malpractice and a crime on my part! But when an MD just sends nearly everyone for drugs and never mentions other treatments that could safely help that person, it's not malpractice?

Yes, that is what has been going on for decades folks! Wake up and ask your own MD “Why did you not recommend that maybe I try a DC for my aches, pains and headaches instead of the drugs right off the bat Doc?” Go ahead, I dare you! Or do you think your own MD is just too closed minded, uninformed or worse yet, biased towards other forms of natural, non-drug health care? Be brave, let me know how that goes folks. Now, here is a portion of the article as posted below. Pay attention, your own life could depend on it!

Prescription Drugs Now Kill More People than Illegal Drugs Prescription drugs are now killing more people than traffic accidents and illegal drugs, according to the 2009 death statistics. Read the full article at http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/10/26/prescription-drugs-number-one-cause-preventable-death-in-us.aspx

For example, hydrocodone, a prescription opiate, is synthetic heroin. It's indistinguishable from any other heroine as far as your brain and body is concerned. So, if you're hooked on hydrocodone, you are in fact a good-old-fashioned heroin addict.’ Merck: With a long list of deaths to its credit, and more than $5.5 billion in judgments and fines levied against it, it was five years before Merck made its $30-billion recall of the painkiller Vioxx that I warned my readers might be a real killer for some people. After the drug was withdrawn, and 60,000 had already died, Merck picked up the pieces painlessly by getting a new drug fast-tracked and on the market. That drug is Gardasil, a vaccine that so far has been linked to thousands of adverse events and at least 49 unexplained deaths. It's a situation that the FDA and CDC have been denying repeatedly, keeping their heads buried in the sand even as the adverse reports

mount. Baxter: Dozens of recalls of products that caused deaths and injuries, at least 11 different guilty pleas to fraud and illegal sales activity, more than 200 lawsuits – many of them stemming from selling AIDS-tainted blood to hemophiliacs – and more than $1.3 billion in criminal fines and civil penalties. Pfizer: In

the largest health care fraud settlement in history, Pfizer was ordered to pay $2.3 billion to resolve criminal and civil allegations that the company illegally promoted uses of four of its drugs, including the painkiller Bextra, the antipsychotic Geodon, the antibiotic Zyvox, and the anti-epileptic Lyrica. The information as posted above is from the original article and points out what I've been preaching as a DC for over 30 years now. The fact is, most people just want a quick fix to their health issues and just taking pills is one of the most common answers offered by their medical doctors. It is what they are trained for and it is what they know the best.

The REAL War on Drugs should be right here, not on illegal drugs as illegal drugs only kill about 15,000 a year in the USA. Ten times as many people die each year from LEGAL drugs. Let that sink in for a minute. In my own opinion, most people are not well informed, if at all, of other choices that may help them or cure them of many health conditions, injuries and aliments. The MD's just send folks to the pharmacy about 97% of the time for all health issues. Of course the American Medical Association is in bed with the Pharmaceutical Industry, as it goes hand and hand for good business. And we sit around and wonder why we have a massive death problem with prescription drugs? We hear the politicians up on stage speaking about the “War on Drugs” and the border security issues with drugs being brought into the USA and what they are going to do about it. Meanwhile, the talking heads seem to know little or nothing about the real drug problem in the USA and around the most of the world? It appears to me that human nature always wants the quick easy fix for a given problem instead of getting to the real root of the health issue. So, taking drugs is the easy fix for most of us and even for our children and older folks. Because things like exercise, proper diet and weight management, meditation or the like, finding a hobby that you enjoy that provides exercise or stress relief, regular chiropractic like you get regular dental check-ups, acupuncture, massage and stretching are too much trouble and take way to much time and effort and might not be covered by your medical insurance plan. No, a cup of tea, massage, chiropractic, acupuncture will NOT cure any and all issues. Thank the Lord (and some very smart humans for antibiotics and surgery when needed, including all modern scans and diagnostics) but, never discount the effectiveness of other types of health care in many a condition that are far safer to use than prescription or over the counter drugs with all their side effect and risk of reactions. Most folks are just too lazy or misinformed or plain uninformed to try these other types of treatments. If you can read this as posted, it is up to you to make the best, informed choices for you. Without the full knowledge of the choices, it would be tougher to make the best choice. Now you know!

www.SS-OffRoadMagazine.com - MARCH 2016 - S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE 15

In previous columns I’ve discussed how to prepare your vehicle for driving off-road, and offered a number of safety

suggestions for you and your passengers. The goal, of course, is to make sure you are properly prepared for your trip and ready for most contingencies. This month I’d like to revisit the issue of preparedness but take more of a “big picture” approach. It’s too easy to become complacent in our lives. We’re not faced with daily calamities and crises like you see in other parts of the world. We California residents are somewhat more in tune because we’re always under the threat of an earthquake, and we frequently deal with major events such as wildfires. But it’s still easy to take our relatively calm lifestyle for granted. Disaster can strike in a heartbeat. Will you know what to do when it does? How will you and your family react? Where will you go? These and many other questions will be blazing through your mind. Unfortunately, that is not the time to be asking questions. Instead, you must act, and act fast. How you respond when disaster strikes is directly related to how well you and your family have prepared. The Red Cross www.redcross.org and FEMA www.fema.gov provide a wealth of information on how to prepare for emergencies. The key is to take action now. Merely thinking about it won’t do any good. The interesting thing about 4-wheelers is to begin with they often are pretty well prepared. Their vehicles are well stocked with the necessary tools and materials, and many have what I call a survival mindset. We’re accustomed to being out among the elements, and can manage fairly well for a short period of time. The problem is the planning we do is just for the particular outdoor trip, which may last a few days at most. We don’t give much thought to how to handle

a major urban crisis. Reviewing the Red Cross and FEMA sites will give you some great ideas. The next step is to put those thoughts into action. Don’t worry about accomplishing everything in one day. Some of these steps, like developing a plan, take time. What’s important is that you do something now. Use the “Swiss cheese” approach. When faced with a large, daunting task or problem, tackle the small matters you know you can accomplish. Over time

you will punch enough holes in the main problem so that it looks like Swiss cheese and will fall apart on it own.

Complete two actions today. First, develop your emergency contact list. This should be comprised of a friend or family member in another state. (A son in Michigan is on my list.) Sometimes only a long-distance call will go through. Just as you program your ICE (In Case of Emergency) numbers into your cell phone, you also select an individual to contact in the event of a major disaster. Make sure your family members know the contact person’s name and number. This person can relay messages for family members. During an emergency, and if you have the time, let your contact know where you are going should you have to evacuate. Second, establish two meeting places for your family. One should be just outside the house. This is especially critical during a fire. Too many people have perished because they ran back into their homes, not knowing that their loved ones were safely outside. The second location should be in your community, and is used in the event of a larger-scale disaster. Recently I successfully tested my ability, using ham radio, to contact my wife while she was in the parking lot at work. For us that parking lot is an ideal location, because it is local, sits on a hill, and there’s a good chance at least one of us will be there. OK, if you want one more simple action for today, jump on the FEMA site, click on the Plan Ahead tab, and print

the suggestions listed under “Protect Your Family.” I also suggest that you keep your gas tank at least half full at all times, and create a Go-Bag. Containing food, water and other essentials, your Go-Bag can help you survive on your own for several days. Backpacks with multiple pockets make really good Go-Bags. Some people keep these in their homes; others store theirs in the vehicle. Either way, the Go-Bag is essential for preparedness planning when you must leave immediately. You may also consider brushing up

on your driving skills. Sign up for one or more off-road driving courses (such as a Rocks Clinic or the Basic Course), or an advanced course (Winching, for example), so you are better

prepared to drive over broken streets, downed telephone poles, other debris, and climb curbs to skirt problems. The Go-Bag, along with the supplies and materials already on hand and the skills you bring to the table, turn your 4WD vehicle into what I like to call a Mobile Disaster Preparedness unit. Just what you need in a time of crisis. Emergency preparedness isn’t the most pleasant topic. We wish we didn’t have to even think about this. But disasters are a part of life. By preparing properly now you give yourself and your family a fighting chance should the unthinkable occur.

Glen Helen Raceway has been behind the curtain of keeping Quad racing

on the surface and roosting as the seasons and years coast by on the Southern California scene, with the five round STI Quad-X and UTV Racing Series Presented by Yamaha. The entry numbers have experienced a

decline over the past few years, but Glen Helen adapted with the trend by introducing the ever growing sport of UTV racing to the Quad-X program. In addition to the full slate of Quad classes, there is also a full gambit of UTV classes. The first two rounds of the STI Tire and Wheels were held on a warm Saturday and Sunday, we were on hand for Sunday’s round two, let’s race. Commonly seen in the Quad-X Pro Championship final standings over several seasons, multiple series Champion, David Haggsma,

will also be racing in the AMA’s 2016 ATV Motocross National Championship, as part of the Maxxis Tires, Liquid Wrench, Elka, Honda Team. The 2015 STI Quad/UTV X Series

Champion in both the Quad Open Pro and UTV Pro class laid down the speed as always on the Glen Helen dirt that Haagsma knows oh so well. At the previous day’s round one Haagsma ran away with the Quad Pro moto one start and never looked back for the win. Former Quad-X Champion Kory Ellis, has taken on a mechanic, coach and mentor role with Haagsma, and the team decided on the strategy of sitting still on the Quad Pro start giving the pack a substantial head start. In round one’s moto two after holding back on the start Haagsma checked in at sixth place on lap one, then in the lead by lap four for the win in the seven lap Quad Pro moto two, Haagsma (1-1) went on to the Quad Pro overall win in round one. For this round two, Haagsma stayed behind once again on the start of both motos of the Quad Open Pro, and the results were the same as he caught the leaders and gapped out for both Quad Pro moto wins and overall. In the UTV Pro moto one, Nic Granlund, swooped through the timer at just over half of a second in front of Haggsma on lap one. Out of Las Vegas, Granlund edged away from Haagsma driving through five laps for the moto one win, almost three seconds back Haagsma for second and Larry Heidler for third. Coming in on lap one with Granlund in the lead of moto two, into a left hand sweeper about

four turns from the scoring line. Haagsma in second cuts his car hard left looking to capitalize on Granlund going wide. The plan rings true, Granlund in hot sweeps wide Haagsma tacks the gas to the floor, going inside of Granlund for the lead. Haagsma races up a two second lead on lap two, Granlund in second,

and Cody Wemple having a great race in third, three seconds behind Granlund. Racing fast into a left hand, Wemple’s ride swaps the rear end and he high-centers on a berm ridge. Haagsma runs it out at five laps and a two second plus gap for the moto two win. Granlund in second and Heidler third. The final three are Haagsma (2-1) first, Granlund (1-2) second, and Heidler (3-3). Haagsma finishes up the weekend winning the Quad Open Pro and UTV Pro overalls both days. He is also racing the 2016 World Off Road Racing Championship Series (WORCS) in the UTV and Quad classes. Out of Hemet, Colby Wemple, lit it up in moto two falling in behind the leaders and appearing to have third wrapped up, until he got a little heavy on the throttle in a slick corner spinning out. At sixteen years old, Wemple has worked tirelessly on his stock 2014 Polaris XP-1000 in preparation for the series, building and modifying the car from the ground up. The youngster has also participated in the KTM Challenge, a promotion by KTM allowing mini racers to race in a Supercross event. With his motocross experience and fearless nature on the track, and considering this was reportedly his first time racing the UTV, he is just beginning to start rattling the top three. Please go to quadxseries.com for complete information, and glenhelen.com/results/ for complete results for the series. E

Sara Price: The Racing Journey Continues

By Rodney RutherfordImages courtesy Sara Price

Thunder on two wheels for well over a decade, Sara Price has seventeen National Amateur Motocross titles. Racing

at AMA’s Amateur National Championships in 2006, Price placed first in the Girls 65-105cc (9-13) class for the championship. She went on to place second in the 2008 Woman’s and second in the 2009 Woman’s (age 14+) class, both years were close in final points for the titles. She also earned National number four in the 2009 final Woman’s Pro points, 2009 Lucas Oil Woman’s Class Rookie of the Year. Her list of wins on two wheels just continues on as her 2015 Lake Elsinore GP win in the Woman’s class chalked up yet another Elsinore win on the bike. Price made the transition to UTV’s in 2013 but still brings out the bike for occasional racing fun. Price has done well in UTV racing and won the 2015 TerraCross Woman’s Championship. A long time Kawasaki rider she is reportedly the first Woman Pro motocrosser to ever receive a factory contract, which Kawasaki awarded her in 2010. This rapport with Kawasaki is ongoing and she is keeping the spotlight on the company. IMG Sports racers and the Kawasaki Teryx Girls, Sara Price (driver) and Erica Sacks took

their shot at the 2015 Rallye Aicha des Gazelles Du Maroc. The fifteen day Rally, started in 1990 by Dominique Serr, is restricted to Women, and is not a race regarding time or speed. The Rallye is a challenge to go from one point to another in the shortest distance possible. Utilizing maps that are decades old with no updates, no global positioning satellite equipment and no cell phone the competitors have to do without the technologies we depend on everyday. Besides the outdated maps some of which are reported to be written in French, teams are allowed to use a compass, navigational plotter and a ruler. The teams receive course headings, checkpoints, geographic coordinates, distances to the checkpoints, in the “Road Book” which is distributed for each day’s stage. The course changes every year and involves eight days of navigation, six legs. and two marathon legs that are two days long. Price and Sacks finished seventh in the Quad/Moto/SSV class. Experienced off-roaders, they had their share of interesting tales, such as running out of fuel in the first stage. The two were catching or attempting to catch some shut-eye as they awaited a fuel supply and were startled by kind locals offering assistance. The teammates were refueled by 3:00 a.m. and back at camp to get ready for the 6:00 a.m. start where competitors launch into the day at two minute intervals. The team was against the wall on the second day, in a case of deja vu all over again. Gaining elevation as the night approached they were caught on a cliff where they lost Sara’s sleeping bag as the check point beckoned in the area below the cliff. They made it back to camp and finished the

rally. Deciding to forgo the 2016 Rally for the King of the Hammers in Johnson Valley, California, the Teryx Girls had another specialized task thrust in front of them and their crew. Price and Sacks recently customized their Kawasaki Teryx Side X Side with the help of Jim Hill at IMG Sports. The IMG Sports crew and many fabricators contributed to the intricate details required to take on the 2016 Polaris UTV King of the Hammers race, a rugged mix of 4-wheeling and off-roading in the Johnson Valley. “We started 20th in KOH and were 12th coming out of a desert section and then going into a rock section got into 5th before breaking at mile 78 leaving us out of the race,” Price wrote. With Sacks in the passenger/spotter seat, the team placed 26th in a field of sixty entrants, emerging as threats for the title in races to come based on the Teryx Girls performance before the mechanical issue.. Price is the real deal, dynamically still writing her legacy with racing accomplishments and has the chutzpa to get her “Full Tilt Boogey” on. Sacks is engulfed in her vortex and who knows what treasures line their choppy rutted path. From Price’s website on a recent commercial video for Toyota of

the USA, she is shown painting a colorful trace with a Toyota Prius, “They gave me an empty Airplane hangar and hooked up my biometric feedback to an LED stick on the back of the Prius making it my paint brush for light art! Who says you can’t get sideways in a Prius!” She is scheduled to pilot a Toyota of Escondido Four-Runner in the all Women USA based 2016 Rebelle Rally, a navigational competition, in October. Toyota of Escondido will also have her in a Toyota Scion FRS in the TRD Cup, “a time attack series.” At press time she was scheduled to go full Teryx Girls with Sacks in the UTV World Championships, racing in the CBS Sports televised 2016 TerraCross

series to defend her title. Bittorrent’s Price gives a much appreciative thanks to Bittorent.com, Toyota of Escondido, IMG Sports, Kawasaki, K&N Filters, Super ATV, Raceline Wheels, Arisun Tires, Slime, HCR Racing, Bell, KC Hilites, Summer Brothers Racing, F&L Racing Fuel, PRP Seats, PCI Radios, 100% Goggles, Factory UTV, Alpinestars, Coyote Enterprises, Attain Media and UTV Underground. The Sara Price story continues to unfold. For up to date information on the adventures please go to facebook.com/teryxgirls and sarapricemx.

Southern California Flat TracK Association 2015 Awards CeremonyJanuary 30, 2016, Perris CAArticle & Photos by Rodney Rutherford

Thousands of dollars in raffle prizes are the norm at the SCFTA Flat Track Championship series awards ceremony,

along with custom jackets and plenty of

emotion. In the SCFTA tradition a plethora of racers were honored with SCFTA number one plates .We will cover five participants as we close out the 2015 season and welcome in the 2016 season. Jacob Cascio, went on

an unexpected and unwelcome ride to the hospital ending his season at the half-way point of the series. Cascio went down and was knocked unconscious at a practice session after going through a wall and making contact with two riders. He was knocked out and pinned underneath his bike while the pipe burned his left leg to a point of third degree burns requiring an eleven day stay in the intensive care unit. Recognized for his bravery and persistence in what was a very difficult time for the youngster at this awards ceremony, he was presented a SCFTA embroidered jacket but most of all given respect for his strength in this difficult injury and the recovery process. Cascio is on the go once again and went for a good ride at round one, more on that next month in the SCFTA round one article. He would like to thank Dalton Racing, Mom Gina, Dad Phil, Grandma Irene, and everyone that has supported him through his racing and injury recovery. Jasper “Jidge” Heathfield, had a wondrous first season in his inaugural sliding season. Heathfield appeared to be gauging his racing growth and staying within his capabilities as his first season matured. Whether this was true or just imagined by the reporter, Heathfield’s confidence seemingly went off the charts and he was merging and battling with clusters of more experienced racers in the latter rounds. Heathfield went on to win eight of ten rounds raced for the 2015 SCFTA 50cc 4-Stroke Beginner title. The smiling youngster was a happy one hanging out with his Mom Anne-Marie, and his racer dad Marc. Heathfield said he had an “awesome” season, and his favorite subjects in school are “Math and Lunch.” Heathfield will be racing in the 65-70cc 4-Stroke Beginner and 65-70cc Open. Look for him crowding out the competitors on the box for years to come. The Moore Family has a rich and colorful history in the world of flat track racing. After Donnie Moore’s dad (Donnie Moore Sr.) passed away a few years ago there was a break in the action but in 2015 we had a return of Moore & Moore Racing to the flat track scene. Donnie Moore Jr. and his Uncle Ron Moore, had Donnie’s dad deep in their thoughts as the Uncle-Nephew duo painted the track red with speed and memories of the past, present and future. Donnie was initially racing in both the Senior 50+ Novice and

Vet 35+ Novice. Focused on the Vet 35+ Novice he still finished third in the 50+ Novice points. Doing it the blue collar way, he finished on the box with a third in round three and second in the Vet 35+ Novice on his only trips to the top three. Instead he dug in his heels and hailed five fourth place finishes and clinched the Vet 35+ Novice Title in round eleven. Donnie would like to thank Jeff Johnson, his mechanic, Southland Racing, Paint by Smokey, NGK Leathers, Kelsey Gordon, Ron Smith Painting and all his fans. This racing quest for Donnie appeared to focus on the memory of his father, and after not racing in forty years, he represented well with the title. His dream is secured and Dad is happy. Donnie Moore’s Uncle Ron, a former National number, still has the game despite taking over twenty-seven years between races at one point. Racing on a Honda CRF450R, Ron made short work of the Premier 70+ class. Moore dominated the class winning the first ten rounds and enough of a point difference to secure the 2015 SCFTA Premiere 70+ Title in round ten. The young at heart Ron, was up to racing two classes at certain rounds winning one Main and placing third or better five times, for a third in the Vet Super Senior 60+ final score. Ron and Donnie both winning titles, set in place a Winning Memorial to Donnie Moore Sr., and a duo performance that he likely would be pleased with. Ron will be back in the swing of the 2016 SCFTA series to defend his title in the 70+ and race in the Super Senior 60+ in search of that title as well. United State Air Force career man Jim Ottele, had an interesting season for the indefatigable racer with his opportunity to race the Bob Nichols 1937 Big Base Scout Indian. The former race bike was back in winning form after updating the exhaust system, fuel system, and the other staples of fine tuning a seventy-nine year old classic Indian. He managed to get issues worked out and was allowed to run the Indian at Perris, which he did up through round eight. While mired in fine tuning the Indian Ottele reported he lost focus on the Senior Vet +50 Expert. “Jim Wood of Southland Racing pointed out on the Friday before the double header final of the series that I had better put some

new tires on my 450 and put my head down if I hoped to win the series this year”, Ottele wrote. Larry Earhart was eleven points behind Ottele in second, and Joe Steffen thirteen back in third. Ottele, after winning round eleven, just needed to point on Sunday. He finished fourth and secured the 2015 SCFTA Senior Vet +50 Expert Title. Ottele would like to thank Bob Nichols Racing, Southland Racing, Douglas Motorcycles and Mr. Ed’s Racing. Please go to SCFTAracing.com for results, point standings, and schedule information for the remaining eleven rounds.

MSR Presents AMA District 37 Big 6 Racing UpdateArticle and Photo by Rodney Rutherford

District 37 Big 6 Racing commenced their 2016 eight round series under beautiful weather in Adelanto, California. For the

big round one opener, “The Adelanto GP” was held at Heritage Field in Adelanto. The home field of the Minor League Baseball team the High Desert Mavericks, tossed the baseballs aside for the grandest Grand Prix series of them all and may have witnessed the changing of the guard in the elite division of the West Coast Grand Prix (WCGP). The returning 2015 WCGP Pro Champion Colton Udall, was well aware of the threat to defending his 2015 title in Blayne Thompson. Thompson had several shadow box races in the ninety minute GP's throughout the 2015 season, racing out the final round with two second place finishes and a third in the series. Establishing his GP speed in 2015 with his podium finishes and after a high-speed tussle with Robby Bell for the lead at round six in Ridgecrest, Thompson had fuel issues, falling out of the top five at the finish but sending a strong message, he is on fire and ready to burn the opponents. Thompson along with a new member

of the WCGP Pro in Zip-Ty Racing's Dalton Shirey, steam-rolled the pack at round one. Thompson splintered the leaders on lap one tagging the scoring alley with a sixteen second lead over second place Shirey. Thompson put it on skates and stayed the lead throughout the eight lap count and the Adelanto WCGP win, and the King of Adelanto declaration. Racing in the last two 2015 WCGP Pro events, Shirey, a 2015 AMA National Hare and Hound Champion will likely be another one getting in the way of the old guard, sticking a strong second at the end of each lap and second in the WCGP Pro. Multi time GP Champion Robby Bell came in third at Adelanto. Thompson stayed in the tube of the podium top, working his way through the round two lineup. Udall, re-tooling from a seventh place finish at Adelanto, rolled out the speed and came back with panache at round two in Taft.

Thompson went from third to first by lap three while Udall was dicing for the top four. Udall put on a charge to the front and was in the point by lap six, as Thompson ran in second while lining up his salvos for the seventh and final lap. Flame on and Thompson takes the lead and win, Udall second, and Bell a second consecutive third place. Into round three we have Thompson and Bell sitting one-two in the points respectively and unofficially for the WCGP Pro standings as round three approaches. Round three will be March 5-7 at Glen Helen Raceway in Devore, California. There is a class for all in the two days of Big 6 racing, please go to www.big6racing.com for results and schedule information. E
