Neighbourhood Watch is coming to Sunbury, possibly as early as next year.

Local police and the Neighbourhood Watch organisation are involved in talks to start a group in the town.

Police sergeant John Letchford said it was time its absence in Sunbury was rectified.

Neighbourhood Watch state co-ordinator Gill Metz said a community-run group in Sunbury petered out more than a decade ago.

She said the state organisation had undergone a lot of change in recent years, but the philosophy remained the same.

Its all about looking out for each other, Ms Metz said.

The new group will cover all of Sunbury, rather than particular neighbourhoods.

Ms Metz said the explosion of social media presented many opportunities.

It allows us to get our messages out in a very timely manner, she said, citing a recent incident in Geelong, where a Neighbourhood Watch group was able to alert residents almost immediately about a conman operating in the area.

Sunbury resident and former Shire of Bulla councillor Hector Bugeja encouraged people to support the group.

Anything to help raise awareness and encourage people to report crimes would be welcome, he said.

Ms Metz said the organisation wanted to hear from people interested in joining the new group.

    More details are at www.nhw.com.au.

Macedon Ranges police and health experts have warned that the shire is not immune to the scourge of crystal methamphetamine.

Ahead of a free community forum being held in New Gisborne on December 16, Inspector Ryan Irwin said that while ice was not causing the widespread problems experienced by other areas, there was no room for complacency.

There is a concern that ice is a growing issue here, he said. We want to provide local people with the right information so they can be informed and equipped if they find themselves confronted with this issue.

Ice is a highly addictive drug that causes increased aggression, sleep deprivation, impaired judgment and intense lows.

Inspector Irwin said police were coming across people in possession of the drug every week.

Without wanting to be alarmist, it is definitely here.

He said there was a strong link between the presence of drugs and increases in crime.

Next weeks forum, which will be facilitated by drug health and information body the Penington Institute, will include a panel of local service providers. Inspector Irwin said they would provide advice for people wanting to help family and friends who might be struggling with ice.

We know there are people who know that their kids or people in their social set are using ice, but they dont know what to do, he said. We want to help them answer that question, what can I do for my son or daughter?

The forum will be at 247 Station Street, next to New Gisborne Primary School, from 7pm. For bookings, email [email protected].

A Gisborne man who underwent open-heart surgery as a child has lived to tell the tale and cycled his way from London to New Zealand.

Jeremy Scott hopes his story will inspire other people to live a life less ordinary.

Scott, 41, is about to release a book chronicling his 51,916-kilometre journey, which took more than two and a half years.

The architectural draftsman got on his bike in October, 2011, and finished the ride in May this year.

He was inspired to embark on the adventure after reading a series of articles about cycling tourism while living and working in Britain.

Id been looking for some sort of challenge in my life but didnt know what it was, he says.

Scott, who grew up in Auckland, had already conquered a major difficulty in his life.

A large hole in his aorta valve led to open-heart surgery when he was four.

While the surgery was successful, he says he was often frustrated by his inability to keep up with other children.

Several decades later, Scotts journey through 29 countries from Europe to the Middle East, on to Asia and south to his homeland of New Zealand was also a difficult one.

Apart from dealing with rain, extreme heat, subzero temperatures, deserts and mountain terrain, Scott occasionally lived in fear of bears and wild dogs.

A run-in with members of Irans mafia is a moment he says he will never forget.

They owned a truck stop where I stopped for a rest, he says. Id agreed to stay there the night it turned out that it was just a front for their drug dealing. When I realised what they were doing and that they had guns, I was

scared to leave as they would think I was going straight to the police.

Then a couple of trucks turned up and the drivers sat at different tables. When they ordered their food I said to myself, Ive got four witnesses Im going.

Scott approached the men who ran the truck stop and told them he had to leave. He says he quickly rode about 40 kilometres in the pitch dark absolutely crapping myself.

While the trip had its hairy moments,

    Kindness powered the pedals

Scott says there were also times when he was overwhelmed by the immense beauty of the worlds creatures and landscapes.

For me, probably the biggest highlight of the trip was the people, he says. So many times I was offered a place to sleep, or food or friendship.

Scott, who moved into the Gisborne area after his ride to be close to his sister, says his cycling trek has sparked a desire to pursue a new career as a motivational speaker.

I realised on my trip how many people were inspired by my lifes journey it opened my eyes to the fact that I can use my life to help inspire others, he says.

Scotts book, The Long Road from a Broken Heart, will be released on December 15. The large format, 274-page book includes more than 170 photos.

The book, which costs $75, is available at www.jeremyscott.com.au. Ten per cent of every copy sold will go to the Heart Foundation.

A rogue Betty Rubble, medieval knight and bombshell policewoman are among the people wanted by volunteers at a community-run costume hire shop in Lancefield.

Fancy That, an offshoot of the towns opportunity shop, is holding a no-questions- asked amnesty as it seeks the return of these and other dress-ups.

Other items that were never returned after the maximum one-week hire period include a womens Snow White costume and childrens Monsters Inc outfit.

People who have forgotten to return a costume hired from the shop are being urged

to drop them off to shop volunteers, including Lancefield twins Linda Davies and Caroline Middenway (pictured) ahead of the busy holiday period.

Fancy That has hundreds of other outfits for people attending Christmas and New Years parties, ranging from cowboys and Indians to 1920s gangster costumes and Bollywood clothing.

The High Street shop is open from 1.30-5pm on Wednesdays and Fridays and 10am-2pm on Saturdays.

Gunman robs pregnant womanA heavily pregnant woman has been robbed while working at a Sunbury service station. Hume detectives are seeking information from the public after a man entered the Horne Street service station about 9.55pm on November 26. A police spokeswoman said the man demanded cash and became aggressive after being unhappy with the amount provided, telling the attendant he had a gun and threatening her. He left after being told she had provided him with all the cash available. The woman was not injured in the incident. The man is described as Caucasian, aged 20 to 30, with a solid build and crew cut.

Bogus cop thinks better of it Kyneton police are hunting a man who pulled over a driver using flashing red and blue lights. A spokeswoman said a Kyneton woman, 20, told police the incident took place on Yaldwyn Street East shortly before 10pm on Thursday, November 20. She said an old Holden sedan with a loud exhaust was being driven behind her car and the driver activated flashing lights which were fixed to the dashboard. A man got out of the car and approached the drivers window, asking her to produce her licence and registration. Police said the woman had reservations about the mans identity. When she began to question him, he ran to his car and drove away. The man is aged 20-25, about 173 centimetres tall and with sandy brown hair. Anyone with information should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Careful with that fireFire restrictions came into force in the Macedon Ranges at 1am on Monday. With forecasters predicting a hotter and drier summer than normal, authorities have warned they will take a zero tolerance approach to illegally lit fires. More details are at www.cfa.vic.gov.au/can or phone 1800 240 667.

The Gardiner Reserve Community Project Committee is inviting people to its end-of-year fundraising event, with popular Christmas movie The Grinch to be projected onto a 10-metre screen.

Committee president Paul Doolan says the movie night on Sunday, December 21, will help finish the first stage of upgrades at the reserve.

The second part of stage one allows for an electronic screen, which will act as a scoreboard, outdoor cinema and communication notice board in times of emergency, Mr Doolan said.

Plans for stage two works include an amphitheatre between Gardiner and Sankey reserves for use by schools and community groups. The movie night will raise funds for both stages of work.

People are being encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and picnic baskets.

A sausage sizzle and refreshments will be available and Santa will make a visit.

Tickets are $10 each or $30 for families (two adults, two children). Gates open at 6pm and the movie will start at 8pm.

    To book, visit www.trybooking.com/GJFT.

In any sport, good technique is a strong foundation to enhance performance and to help you keep your body injury free.

In dance, the way you point your foot can not only dramatically change the aesthetics of your dancing, but can change the way different structures and muscles are loaded in the leg and foot. Here are a few points:

Pointing a foot should be initiated from the ankle, and the toes should be stretched out, like extension of the curves of your feet. Basically, the direction your foot is pointing should be in a straight line with your leg.

There are two main types of poor ankle positioning with pointing. Sickling the foot is when the outside ankle bone (lateral malleolus) deviates outwards and/or towards the floor. Fishing is when the inside ankle bone (the medial malleoulus) deviates inwards and/or towards the floor. Both of these actions create uneven stresses around the ankle, which over time can lead to injury.

Pointing shouldnt be initiated at the toes. Curling the toes under can be a sign that you are over utilizing the muscles in your lower leg, rather than using the deep muscle in your foot that help control fine toe positioning.

Incorrect technique can lead to symptoms such as ankle and foot pain, muscle tightness, and cramping in the arch.

If your teacher has identified these issues with your point, a physiotherapist can assist with exercises to help improve your technique.

Its not often a price with a two in front is seen these days, so this one is likely to be snapped up by a savvy investor or first-home buyer wanting to make a start in the market. With a huge street frontage, the house is beautifully presented and, with lovely polished floorboards, timber blinds and an on-trend colour palette, is a great house for a couple or small family. There are three good-sized bedrooms, two with built-in robes; the main has a walk-in robe. An updated bathroom serves these rooms. The lounge room has a ceiling fan and connects with the kitchen-meals area. The compact kitchen is well laid out for practicality and comes equipped with white cabinetry, microwave nook and stainless-steel underbench oven and gas cooktop. Ducted heating and a pergola are further treats and, along with oodles of off-street parking, theres a garage/workshop.

Luxuriously appointed, the house has four bedrooms three with sleek en suites. The huge main bathroom has twin vanity basins and stacks of storage, and theres a great study. If the amazing conservatory at Muckleford Hall doesnt win a legion of fans (and that would be surprising), perhaps the top-notch interior and leafy surrounds on the block of about 3295 square metres will. Four bedrooms include the main with walk-in robe and swish en suite with floating vanity unit and huge shower. The main bathroom picks up on the hints of Victoriana found in the ceiling rosettes, with tessellated-style flooring and clawfoot bath. A library (with floorboards) that links with the conservatory, and a theatre/living room have an innate elegance, while the family room abutting the kitchen is carpeted and has plantation shutters adorning windows and doors to a deck. The kitchen has a modern-country feel, with wooden benchtops, lots of panelled cupboards and stainless-steel dishwasher, wall oven and 900mm gas cooktop under canopy rangehood. A tennis court, gazebo, cubby house and three-car garage are outdoor treats.

Back in the day when the site of this house was farmland, a well was dug. Its still there and the owners have created a traditional wishing well to mark the spot so if the property is one you want to snag, perhaps a whisper into its depths will seal the deal.

The house, on about 0.8 hectares, has plenty on offer to fulfil wishes. Owner-built, its a classic homestead style of its circa - late 1980s era, with colonial windows and wrapped on three sides by bullnose verandahs. Inside, it has the sense of quality and sturdiness which is, really, an owner-builders imprimatur. This gives the house a cachet that sweet young things

in todays housing market can only hope to live up to.

Down a brick-paved path wending past sleeper-edged gardens, entry is under the verandah to a tiled foyer with an L-shaped lounge-dining room on the right; in here, an exposed brick wall with fireplace housing a wood heater has a mantelpiece of recycled timber from Victorias alpine region.

The dining area links with the kitchen which has stacks of timber cupboards (including leadlight overheads), leadlight bifolds to a step-in pantry, a wall oven and 900mm electric cooktop; timber blinds and large-format grey floor tiles are more

recent additions. The adjoining meals zone opens to the laundry which has access to a two-way toilet.

Four bedrooms and the main bathroom are down a carpeted hallway from the entry foyer. Each bedroom (with robes) has pretty garden views, while the main has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with deeply recessed skylight.

The meals area opens to a large covered pergola above polished slate; this is a lovely leafy spot with a wood heater and links to a fenced, in-ground pool surrounded by decking and lots of trees ensure maximum privacy. Brick steps head down

from the pergola area to a vast backyard dotted with shady trees, a mix of cypress and exotics.

A very pretty seasonal creek wends its way through the property, its steep banks lined with trees and tumbling-down ground covers. At the back of the property, there are a storage shed and a large (four-car) steel shed with attached open bay for caravan/boat parking.

A sealed driveway heads to a remote-controlled double garage at this big-hearted property where wishes can come true.

oFFicial ratEs rEMain on holdOfficial Interest rates remain on hold to close 2014. The Reserve Bank of Australia has left the official

cash rate on hold at 2.50% p.a. for December, marking a full calendar year with no change. RBA Governor,

Glenn Stevens cited below trend growth with lower currency and higher house prices means no rate

cut. Rates were tipped by the majority of economists and experts to remain on hold. A survey of 37

financial experts from finder.com.au forecasts the likelihood of a cash rate shift next year (92% believe

the next move will be an increase). Of the 37 experts, many raised several key issues that influenced

their predictions including the need for stability, a slow economy, a weakening Australian Dollar and no

unexpected movements in the past month.Despite most of the experts betting the cash rate will rise next

year, 69% believe property prices will continue to climb. The Aussie Dollar is still high and other than the

property market still potentially overheating in some areas, this isnt enough to raise rates.

oFFicial ratEs rEMain on holdOfficial Interest rates remain on hold to close 2014.

While many fortunes have been made and lost in the real estate business, many people overlook the

value of real estate investing when it comes to planning for retirement. There are many great ways

that you can let real estate build a nice little nest egg for your retirement and the sooner you begin the

process the better. We at Dunlop Real Estate are well equipped to help you in this regard.

When it comes to real estate it is always good to arm yourself with knowledge before taking any steps

and you should carefully discuss all plans for your financial future with your trusted financial planner or

advisor. His or her job is to give you guidance when making plans and purchases that will affect your

financial stability and security. You need to have a complete and thorough inspection performed before

    you purchase the property.

Rental properties arent the only way to build a property investment portfolio. There are all

kinds of property investment opportunities for those that are willing to take the risk. When it comes

to property investing, the greater risks often net the greater potential rewards. The thing you must

remember is that you are gambling with your financial future. We tend to stick with rental properties as

they are a fairly safe bet and actually pay for themselves over the years while building a nice nest egg for

your future. If we can assist you in any way, feel free to contact me, John Dunlop on 9744 2555 or call

into our friendly offices in Sunbury or Gisborne for a chat.
