Drug o�ences and breaches of court orders have driven a 30 per cent hike in Sunbury’s crime rate.

But Hume police’s Inspector Anthony Brown said higher numbers were not necessarily a bad sign, given a string of successful drug raids.

Data released by the Crime Statistics Agency last �ursday reveals 3303 o�ences were recorded in the year to March 31, up from 2534.

�ere were 279 drug o�ences detected in post code 3429, up 55 per cent.

Justice procedures, including breach of court orders, also soared from 211 to 573 cases over the same period – more than 170 per cent.

Inspector Brown said: “Extra support has led to increased patrols, which have led

to increased arrests and detected o�ences. Obviously, drug use in general, we don’t see as good, but the fact we’re catching them indicates we have increased our e�orts in that area.”

Inspector Brown said court order breaches include people who break intervention orders or don’t abide by parole conditions.

“It just says we’re still maintaining our focus. We don’t see any breach as minor so we’re prosecuting every one.”

Vandalism and related o�ences climbed almost 20 per cent, from 1479 to 1770, while crimes against people rose from 467 to 491 (�ve per cent).

Across Hume, the overall crime rate was up more than 16 per cent. �e new �gures come a fortnight a�er the police union rejected calls for Diggers Rest to be transferred into the Sunbury

Sunbury police station already closes on occasions due to a lack of sta�, but o�cers can still be contacted via intercom and phone.

Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn claimed the latest �gures were a direct consequence of not having enough police.

But Sunbury MP Josh Bull said an extra 406 police o�cers would be out on the beat statewide as part of a $596 million state government budget package.

“Since November 2014, the government has funded more than 1150 police personnel, including 300 general duties police, 106 specialist o�cers and 400 custody o�cers,” Mr Bull said.

“With police forming special teams of o�cers – to smash gangs and target violent crime – we can expect to see increases in aggravated burglary and motor vehicle the�s because o�enders are getting caught.”

Inspector Brown said Hume had received more police in the last state increase, and while he hoped for more with the coming roll-out, Sunbury continued to be well served. He also said custody o�cers would free up uniform police.

Overall crime in the Macedon Ranges was up 17 per cent, from 2139 to 2503 total o�ences.

Assaults rose 25 per cent, from 179 to 225, property damage climbed from 197 to 220 o�ences, while court procedures went up from 30 to 64 (113 per cent). Drug use and possession increased slightly, from 147 to 150 o�ences.

Kids having a disco ballHundreds of primary school-aged children will dress in their PJs well before bedtime for this Friday’s Sunbury Blue Light Disco.

Spokeswoman Rose Le Guier says the disco, held every two months, gives children the chance to interact with police in a fun, social setting.

‘‘It’s a healthy physical activity which contributes to the social and emotional development of young people,’’ she says.

‘‘We also provide our junior committee members with meaningful roles in the preparation and running of the discos, aiming to educate and instil accountability.’’

A Romsey teacher has urged Macedon Ranges fathers and educators to sign on for the latest classes of an award-winning youth mental health training course, saying it’s a great chance to learn skills that could save lives.

Sacha Wilmann, head of senior secondary school at Hume Grammar, took part in a 14-hour course o�ered in March.

He said the council-run program provided knowledge crucial to helping young people in a crisis or those in the early stages of a mental illness.

“It was a real eye-opener,” Mr Wilmann said.

“O�en when you’re a teacher or a parent, you just deal with it as it comes at you … you don’t really think about it beyond that.

“But those initial conversations you have, suggestions for getting assistance, and letting them know you’re there for them, can make a real di�erence.”

�e course covers topics including anxiety, depression, psychosis, alcohol and drug problems, and eating disorders.

“To actually hear about the weight of numbers, and the fact that many of the issues are growing, and our health system’s capacity to deal with it … that was sobering,’’ Mr Wilmann said.

He recommended the course to any adult who has dealings with young people. A special men’s-only session will be held at Woodend’s Holgate Brewery in July and August.

Delays caused while the Victorian government decided whether to create a stand-alone Sunbury council stalled plans for Goonawarra’s John McMahon Reserve, according to Hume council.

Responding to a budget submission that slammed the council for perceived inaction at the home of the East Sunbury Sporting Group, council’s city infrastructure director, Peter Waite, said a strategy for the reserve was due to go before councillors later this year.

He said a dra� plan considered another sports oval and other facilities highlighted by the sporting group, which represents the East

Sunbury football, cricket and netball clubs. But group committee member Sarah Johnston, who started a petition that has more than 125 signatures, said players, spectators and o�cials had waited long enough for things like a second oval, pavilion, children’s playground and separate clubrooms for functions.

“We just want a look in,’’ she said. “�ere’s $19.5 million being spent in Craigieburn and you can’t start anything for us?”

Pressure on the reserve’s facilities is expected to grow signi�cantly in coming years, with thousands of houses to be built near the oval on the Melbourne-Lance�eld Road.

Ms Johnston said the absence of any facilities in which to raise money had hamstrung the

�e group’s submission states several capital works projects in the council’s 2013 four-year works plan had not come to fruition.

�ere have been limited contributions for relatively minor upgrades, it said, calling on the council to �nish the dra� plan, which has been in development for several years.

But Mr Waite said the council had invested heavily in the reserve.

“Council has installed a new scoreboard and a new shelter,” he said. “We’ve also sealed the carpark and marked lines, which make it possible for netballers to train.”

Mr Waite said residents and the reserve’s users would be asked for feedback once the reserve’s new plan was released.

Trio on Malmsbury theft chargesThree central Victorian men face burglary and theft charges after goods valued at $15,000 were stolen from a house in Walsh Street, Malmsbury, on April 19. Macedon Ranges detectives arrested a White Hills man, 24, following raids on an Epsom property last Wednesday. A Kangaroo Flat man, 32, was charged on May 31, while a Malmsbury man, 28, was charged on June 12. All three were bailed, but the Malmsbury man has since been remanded for breaching conditions. An author who is writing a history of Riddells Creek is seeking stories and photographs for the project.

Sunbury’s Robyn Goss and husband Ian operated a popular local history museum, featuring an old tram, at Riddells Creek in the 1980s.

She’s putting a call out for information, no matter how large or trivial, as she starts work on an update of her popular 1983 book Riddell’s Village.

�e family of local pioneer John Carre- Riddell has already o�ered photographs to help paint a picture of how the town has changed.

“It’s such a wonderful area with such a rich history,’’ Mrs Goss said. “�ere will be a lot of ‘then and now’ … we want people to be able to

see what it was like, because many people come to live here and have no idea.

“�ey don’t know what they might be living on … it may have been a cordial factory.”

Mrs Goss says she’s interested in hearing residents’ re�ections and memories of the area.

Moves designed to improve transparency of local government chief executives’ pay and performance, and increase collaboration between councils and communities, have been welcomed in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges.

But a proposal to increase mayoral terms to two years and strengthen mayoral powers has led to calls to also increase pay in an e�ort to attract high-quality candidates.

Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins has encouraged people to comment on a directions paper released as part of a wide-ranging review of the Local Government

• Phasing out the rights of non-residentproperty owners to vote in council elections; and• Creating a single, consistent land valuationsystem for levying rates.

Both Macedon Ranges councillor Russell Mowatt and Sunbury Residents Association president Bernie O’Farrell said the idea of two-year mayoral terms was not without merit.

Act. She said the most comprehensive review of the act in 25 years would look at all objectives, roles and functions of councils.Proposed measures include improving

the transparency of the pay, recruitment, conditions and performance of council chief executives, and creating “citizens’ juries” to give residents greater input into the formation of council plans.

Other proposed reforms include:• Providing the option of directly electedmayors;• Beefingup thepowers of the local governmentminister to deal with misbehaving councillors;• Introducing electronic voting for the 2020council elections;

But they said it was a lot to ask of someone who might be reliant on other income.

“If someone’s working full-time, it’s going to be very hard,” Cr Mowatt said.

Mr O’Farrell said extending mayoral terms could weaken the field of candidates.

“You should have the best person for the job, but if they don’t have the ability to get leave from where they are, you are limiting the people you can draw upon,” he said.

While supporting the general concept of citizens’ juries, Mr O’Farrell and Cr Mowatt said they would only work if people with su�cient expertise were involved.

Brainstorming a sunnier Sunbury By Matt Crossman

Suggestions to improve Sunbury are gaining traction among a group of residents and shopkeepers who have been meeting to discuss ‘‘dangerous’’ ideas.

�e Cafe of Dangerous Ideas is an initiative of Sunbury Community Health (SCH), which opened late last year and has included roundtable meetings at which participants have explored opportunities to improve the town.

Initiating community “get to know you” activities, creating teams to welcome new residents and a new cultural food festival were among ideas raised.

SCH child, youth and family services general manager Marcus Bosch said the concept had sparked some “really good conversations”.

“�e early stages were very much putting ideas out there whereas now we are looking at where do we go from here,” he said.

“We’ve done a lot of talking through the strengths of Sunbury and looking at how we can make it better, through some of those ideas and others.”

Mr Bosch said residents from all walks of life were encouraged to take part in the next phase of the project.

“We’re looking to explore how we can use the group to move some of these ideas along,” he said.

Another idea proposed was setting up neighbourly “sharehoods”, where barbecues or social media connections are organised on a street by street basis, to share information, skills and tools.

Plans for a new Kyneton Primary School have been enthusiastically welcomed around town, with many prospective parents seeking meetings to talk about the design.

Principal Alistair Rayner said there had been a lot of ‘‘enthusiasm and excitement’’, with people expressing overwhelming support.

Detailed plans for the new school on Edgecombe Street, next to Kyneton Secondary College, were unveiled at a community meeting, and are on display at the current school and in main street community information windows.

�e design features a range of learning spaces catering for all types of learners, including ‘‘quiet spaces’’ for children with special needs.

“We’re kind of sur�ng a wave at the moment,’’ Mr Rayner said.

‘‘We’ve been having a lot of meetings with prospective parents wanting to talk through the plans. �e reception’s been fantastic.”

Mr Rayner said access-for-all would be a big drawcard of the new school.

“When I came on board at the start of term four last year, I was so pleased to �nd that plans had advanced to the state [they had].

“�ey had thought about kids’ learning needs, not about teacher’s teaching styles,’’ he said.

“We will focus on developing teaching styles to work in those spaces.

“Our practices are already changing.”Incorporation of the latest technology won’t

come at the expense of “authentic, collaborative conversation”.

“Our approach is to put the right kind of device in front of children to, again, suit their learning style,” Mr Rayner said.

A Gisborne aged care centre has been promised $1.4 million for a new dementia wing to help deal with an anticipated ‘tsunami’ of cases.

Two months a�er attending a dementia forum, Labor’s spokesman on ageing Shayne Neumann returned to Macedon Ranges Health’s Gisborne Oaks aged care home last Wednesday to pledge about half the money needed for a new unit, if the ALP wins government.

MRH chief executive Don Tidbury said the announcement, made by Mr Neumann in conjunction with McEwen MP Rob Mitchell, would make an enormous di�erence to the lives of people living with dementia, if it is ful�lled.

As reported by Star Weekly, projections Star Weekly, projections Star Weeklyshow McEwen will have the state’s second-highest incidence of dementia by 2050, its occurrence tipped to soar by 754.1 per cent.

“Over the next 10 years, the number of people living with dementia will more than double in this community and signi�cantly exceed the Victorian average,’’ Mr Tidbury said.

Mr Tidbury said MRH would embark on a major community fundraising campaign to add to Labor’s commitment, with about $3 million needed to create a best-practice unit.

Mr Neumann and Mr Mitchell attended a forum at the aged care centre in April when carers demanded an immediate response to the crisis facing the area.

Embattled Liberal candidate Chris Jermyn insists he’s still in with a chance to win one of Australia’s most marginal seats when voters go to the polls on July 2.

But his Labor counterpart Rob Mitchell believes it’s clear from the federal government’s actions that the McEwen electorate isn’t a priority.

Announcing $150,000 to improve access for people with a disability and to install a permanent public address system at Sunbury Memorial Hall, Mr Jermyn said he was con�dent voters would see the string of campaign “hiccups” for what they were.

‘‘It’s important we put local issues on the agenda; that’s the big thing here,’’ he said. ‘‘We can play dirty, grubby politics, but frankly I think everyone is sick of that.”

Mr Jermyn was �rmly in the national media spotlight a�er he stood outside Sunbury Community Health on May 28 with Cor�ute signs while Opposition Leader Bill Shorten committed $2 million for a new child health hub.

�e Liberal candidate later packed up his listening post and stormed o� a�er being unable to articulate his own party’s Medicare policy to reporters.

�en, large signs above his Sunbury campaign o�ce had to be pulled down a�er it was revealed they did not meet Hume council bylaws.

Last week, concerns were raised about his involvement in a media development company, which has lost millions of dollars.

‘‘Frankly, they ran out of money,’’ Mr Jermyn said. ‘‘As CEO, I was an employee. I wasn’t on the board … and, I’ll tell you, as a shareholder, I lost more on paper than anyone else.’’

Candidate with ‘hiccups’

Nine candidates will contest McEwen, including Mr Mitchell, who is the sitting MP, Romsey resident Neil Barker (Greens), �e Nationals’ James Anderson and independent Ross Lee. �e Australian Country Party, Rise Up Australia, Animal Justice Party and Family First have also entered the �eld.

Mr Mitchell said Mr Jermyn wasn’t wrong when he said he had a chance to take McEwen.

“Just like there is every chance that the Turnbull government will be returned … [but]

we will have to pay to see the doctor every time, there will be tax cuts for the top end of town at the expense of our kids’ education, and our towns will yet again miss out on vital infrastructure, like mobile black spot �xes and better roads.”

Last Tuesday, Senator Scott Ryan joined Mr Jermyn in announcing the Liberal funding for Sunbury Memorial Hall, a week a�er Labor committed $2 million to a global learning centre there.

What are your ties to the area? How long have you lived here?

I’ve lived in the Macedon Ranges for 16 years, growing up in Woodend and moving to Mount Macedon in my high school years. I’ve been to Woodend Primary School and Braemar College.

How did you get your start in music?

I’ve been musical since I was born. My parents met playing music together, and have passed it on to me. We’ve always been known as the crazy musical family. Mosey started when I became friends with Jimmy [O’Hare] and Isaac [Trickey], both incredible, amazingly talented musicians. We were all interested in the same types of music, and started catching up more o�en with our instruments to cover songs we loved.

What led to you entering last year’s battle of the bands?

We wanted to move away from covers and show the world our original music. Battle of the bands gave us the opportunity to stand on that stage and perform our original music. Knowing we had entered also inspired us to write more of our own songs to show our friends and family.

What has it done for the band, and for you?

For the band, well, we got all the way to the �nal stage and got to share even more of our original work to a larger audience from all over Melbourne. We got to support one of our favourite bands, Alpine, and got wonderful

feedback from them. We’ve been seen by even more people now, who want us to play gigs for them … and the support and followers have just been so incredible!

What was it like performing at the state �nal during this year’s Moomba?

Moomba was amazing. What a great festival! We felt famous up on that huge stage, playing alongside other incredible acts. �e audience was so supportive … and the feedback we got from strangers made us feel so happy.

We have a line-up of gigs coming closer to the end of the year. We are also keen to record our songs, so we can have them on CD for people to listen to.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I have very little spare time, with work, uni [international development studies at Australian Catholic University] and the band. But when I do get a spare moment, I like to write

lyrics, watch Net�ix, go for adventures with my dog, and cook.

Where do you like to hang out?

I love the Village Larder (mmmmm … chai latte). I also love exploring the track around Bu�alo Stadium in Woodend, the old horse racing track.

Despite an 87-goal win at the weekend, Macedon knows it still has plenty of scope for improvement in the Riddell District Netball League.

�e Cats, who have only lost to ladder leaders Rupertswood this season, put on a show against an undermanned Sunbury Kangaroos.

Scoring at least 23 goals in each quarter, the Cats passed the 100-goal mark to win 107-20.

Cats coach Ciara Stewart said she wasn’t 100 per cent happy with how her side played against the Kangaroos.

“�e �rst quarter we weren’t overly happy with,” she said. “Once we pulled our �nger out, we tried new things.

“We were missing one of our permanent players, and with school holidays coming up we’ll be missing a lot of players, so we were trying di�erent combinations.”

Tara Burnip was one player who used the extra court time to her advantage, her height under the ring proving di�cult for the Kangaroos.

Stewart said it was about getting Burnip adjusted to playing in the A-grade side.

“Tara is the newbie out there and a game like today is the perfect time to give her a crack,” Stewart said. “�e physical nature of the game is what she needs to work on. She’ll learn and develop.”

In the previous game, Burnip played a quarter against Lance�eld a�er a 63-goal game the week before.

Stewart said that while the Cats had been winning, they weren’t at the level she wanted.

“We still haven’t had a game which we have been happy with,” she said.

“We haven’t had a full hour and looked back at it as a good game. Against Lance�eld we won by 13, but it felt like two goals.

“We haven’t found connections. We are winning and playing reasonably well and there’s better to come.

“You don’t know which players you are coming up against due to Victorian Netball League.”

�e Cats this week face Riddell, which should have a full squad from which to choose, given this round’s VNL games take place mid-week.

Stewart said she thought the Cats would also have a full list from which to choose, with player unavailability likely to a�ect subsequent matches against Diggers Rest and Romsey.

“It’ll give us our bench mark,” she said of the Riddell match. “It’s going to be an interesting game. ”

Rupertswood, Riddell, Romsey and Melton Centrals were the other winners at the weekend.

When the opportunity came up to coach Sunbury Cricket Club, Justin Nelson’s hand went up.

Nelson, who joined Sunbury last season, had previously spent three years as captain-coach of Victorian Turf Cricket Association club Flemington.

“I’ve always had that passion to coach, and last year was the �rst time I hadn’t done it in a while,” Nelson said last week.

“So when the opportunity came up, I jumped at it.”

�e club announced earlier this month that Nelson would take on the coaching role, with Jason McGann as captain.

It was a tough opening season at Sunbury for Nelson, who only played six games due to a broken �nger. He averaged 13 with the bat and took �ve wickets.

Nelson was part of the GDCA side that won the premier division at Bendigo Country week.

Before coming to Sunbury, he played for more than 10 years at Flemington, and in England.

His signing as coach kicks o� what will be an exciting year for Sunbury, which has new club rooms due to be �nished before the season starts.

Nelson is hoping for a return to the �nals a�er Sunbury �nished seventh last year in the McIntyre Cup.

“I’ve always placed a big emphasis on developing the young players,” he said.

“We’ve managed to hold onto every senior player from last season, and we’re talking to potential recruits.”

Kart star proves his talent on the international stageSunbury’s Jordan Ford shocked himself and the superkart world with a stunning international debut earlier this month.

A�er dominating the 250cc national-class superkart Australian last year, Ford travelled to England for the third and fourth rounds of the European Superkart Championship and the British Superkart Grand Prix.

Over one weekend, Ford competed in the 250cc mono-cylinder division, which is being run for the �rst time this season.

A�er practice ahead of the third round of the championship, Ford quickly realised he wouldn’t just be making up the numbers.

He had never raced against any of the drivers before and he told Star Weekly before travelling Star Weekly before travelling Star Weeklyto England that he was just hoping to be competitive.

“A�er qualifying it made us set our goals higher straight away,” Ford said on his return.

“�e aim was to win then. �e equipment was second to none and I was able to learn the track quickly.”

In a tough battle with British superkart champion Gavin Bennett, Ford won his class in the third round of the European Championship, before engine problems restricted him to fourth place in the fourth round.

“I was close to the track record in practice and I went under it in the race,” he said. “Gavin then went under it again, but I was able to win.

“I had an engine failure in the second race and �nished fourth.”

�e best was still to come for Ford in the grand prix, when he dominated the race and broke the lap record again.

“�ere were 45 karts in my class … the best people in the world competing and I was able to come out on top,” he said.

Ford said he would now focus on the Australian Championships, with an eye on returning to Europe next year.

He won three out of the four races in the opening round of the Australian championship, with engine drama preventing him from starting in the other.

He sits second in the championship and is con�dent he can go back-to-back.

“I think there’s an expectation to defend the title next year,” Ford said of returning to Europe. “If I can maintain the sponsors, maybe I can do the whole European championships.”

Early lead sets Jets up for top eightSunbury Jets cemented their spot in the top eight a�er a hard-fought win over Melton �oroughbreds in Big V men’s division 1 on Sunday.

Against a side coming o� six straight wins, the Jets were challenged from the �rst whistle but managed to hold o� every time the �oroughbreds got within a basket to win 75-66.

�e two sides went goal-for-goal in the �rst quarter. �e Jets led by one point at quarter-time, and extended the margin out to as much as eight points late in the second quarter, before a three-pointer from former Jets player Billy Feben reduced the margin to �ve at the main break.

Scores were level half-way through the third quarter, before the Jets opened the margin back up to six points at the �nal break.

�e �oroughbreds got within two points late in the �nal quarter, but that was as close as they came.

With the �oroughbreds trying to stop the clock, the Jets were sent to the foul line frequently in the dying minutes and the margin blew out to nine points.

Mitchell Newton, who top-scored with 25 points, was impressive at both ends of the court, pulling down a massive 25 rebounds, including 17 defensive rebounds.

Ish Sanders chipped in with 24 points.Meanwhile, it was a big win for the Jets’

undefeated women’s side over fourth-placed Latrobe City.

�e Jets jumped out of the blocks in the �rst half and opened up a 14-point lead at half-time.

It was a more even third quarter, but the Jets extended the lead to 17 points at the main

break. As it’s done many times this season, the Jets �nished the game o� in �ne fashion, winning 90-64.

Courtney Duever led the way on the scoreboard with 27 points. She is averaging 19 points per game this season. ,

Four players scored double �gures for the Jets, including Jess Bygate who returned to the side a�er being part of the New Zealand national team program.

Bygate came o� the bench and scored 15 points for the Jets.

�e New Zealand national team, the Tall Ferns, failed to qualify for the Olympics so coach Kennedy Kereama, who is also the Jets’ coach, will be back for the last part of the regular Big V season and �nals.

Fast-starting Macedon continued its unbeaten run with a hard-fought win over Sunbury Kangaroos in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday.

�e Cats were in control for most of the match and held on for a 14.6 (90)-9.16 (70) win a�er the Kangaroos surged in the �nal 10 minutes.

Macedon kicked six goals to none in the opening quarter, but it was a more even second term when the Kangaroos missed shots that would have put them back in the game.

�e Cats got the margin out to 50 points in the third before the Kangaroos kicked a late goal to go to three-quarter time trailing by 44.

�e Kangaroos didn’t drop their heads and began playing their best football of the game in the �nal term, kicking four goals to halve Macedon’s lead.

�ey had chances to reduce the margin even further but couldn’t convert in front of goal.

For Cats coach Je� Andrews it was a di�cult last few minutes.

“You don’t know how long there is to go and I was very nervous,” he said.

“We had to put one behind the ball just to make sure.

“Darren Goodwin did a really good job at that and saved a couple of their forays forward that may have given them the extra goal to get a real sni�.

“�ey had their chances. We kicked straight and they didn’t … that was probably the di�erence in the game.”

Matthew Knox kicked four goals for the Cats to be the leading goalscorer, while ruckman Tom Waters was adjudged best on ground.

�e Cats’ win came without star mid�elder Jason Cooke and captain James Wright.

Andrews said Cooke would return next week, but Wright, who was a waterboy on Saturday, would still miss a couple more weeks.

Teghan Henderson le� the ground late on Saturday, but Andrews said he should be right for next week.

“He came o� in the last quarter and we couldn’t put him back on and it helped them,” he said. “It was just a tight spot and, with a lead, we didn’t want to risk him.”

�e Cats face a tough fortnight ahead with matches against Riddell and Diggers Rest.

“We’re sitting 8-0, as are Diggers,” Andrews said. “I think there’s a three-way go at the top of the ladder and I rate Riddell as highly as I rate Diggers.

“It’s good to be in the spot we are in, and it starts now.”

Diggers Rest, Broadford, Rupertswood, Riddell and Romsey were the other weekend winners.

East Sunbury has reappointed Steve Grey as senior coach for next season.

�e club announced on �ursday that Grey, in his second season with the Essendon District Football League division 2 club, will stay on next year.

�under football manager Mark Hourigan said Easts wanted to continue the development they had made under Grey’s coaching.

“We’re trying to get the foundations right at the club and build on what we’ve already done,” he said. “We’re heading in the right direction with Steve … there’s been a lot of hard work over the past two years. Now we can concentrate on the season ahead.”

On Saturday, the �under’s three-game winning streak came to an end against East Keilor. A�er leading at half-time, �under could manage only four goals in the second half, losing 13.11 (89)-7.8 (50).

�omas Galea was the only multiple goal-kicker, with two, while Lachlan Brne and David Johnson were named best in a loss that pegs �under at ��h on the ladder, two games outside the top four.

Thunder coach to kick on

Gisborne came from behind against South Bendigo to record its second win of the Bendigo Football League season on Saturday.

�e Bulldogs began slowly, kicking just two goals in the �rst half to be 25 points down at the main break. �ey reduced the margin to 15 at the last change before kicking four goals to one in the �nal quarter to win 9.7 (61)-8.10 (58).

Riley Patterson, Jake Conolan and Bryce Williamson kicked two goals apiece for the Dogs, with Patterson and Ollie Messaoudi judged best on ground.

On Sunday, against ladder leader Strath�eldsaye, Kyneton su�ered its fourth loss of the season. Less than two goals separated the sides at half-time, but the Storm broke the match open with nine goals to two in the third term.

�e Tigers won the �nal quarter, but it wasn’t enough with the Storm home by 16.12 (108)-10.11 (71). Mitch Scholard kicked four goals for the Tigers with Ben Weightman (two) the only other multiple goalscorer.

�e Tigers remain ��h on the ladder, well clear of sixth place on percentage.
