2 April 2013

Dear Members:

I want to say thanks to all the members of the Board for their continuing work in making St. Andrews Country Club such a great place to live and play. As a community we are lucky to have so many talented members who donate a large amount of time and chair the various committees. I want to specifically thank two Board Members who are retiring from the Board: Al Prince for his years of service on the Board and as Greens Chairman, and Alan Minion for stepping up when needed to fill a Board vacancy.

Phase II of the Club Improvement Plan is underway and this summer we will see many changes to our normal routines. I thank you all in advance for your patience and understanding during this time. I, the Board, and the professional staff, realize the inconvenience many of you will experience and want you to know that we are doing everything possible to minimize the disruption.

Switching gears to club activities, March was a very busy month with fantastic competitions in golf and tennis, spectacular dinner events and shows and our traditional Passover and Easter holiday celebrations. There were so many events and activities to enjoy that I’m sure there was something for everyone of every age to enjoy.

April promises more entertainment with the Spring Social on Saturday, April 13. If you haven’t already picked up your invitation, they are available every day at the Front Desk. If your team didn’t get crowned the 2013 Color War Champion, don’t worry! There are still plenty of competitions remaining with the Men’s & Ladies’ Golf Championship, the Tennis Closing Event, Play with the Pros Golf Finals, WGA Spring Tournament and the Forget Me Not Golf Tournament. Please check the April calendar on page 8 and online at www.standrewscc.com.

Eileen and I hope you enjoyed your holidays with your family and friends and look forward to seeing you around the club!

Sincerely,

Michael Goldman President, Board of Governors

Dear Members,

All of the March activities and events continued our winning streak of providing you, your families and guests with excellent service and numerous memories. The professional staff takes great pride in delivering exemplary service each month and I thank each of them for their hard work and dedication. They are truly the ones that make St. Andrews the Best of the Best in service excellence.

As we begin to shift gears in April for Phase II of the Club Improvement Plan, I, and the professional staff, have been working hard to ensure disruption during this time is as minimal as possible. I have reached out to other area clubs and have arranged dining and pool reciprocals with Addison Reserve, Broken Sound, Mizner, Polo Club, Stonebridge & Woodfield. A reciprocal reference guide is currently being prepared and will be mailed to you in the next week or so.

The pool and poolside window will be closing on April 17 and is scheduled to reopen in early November. Most of the Clubhouse will be closed beginning April 29 and these areas include: the main entrance, the lobby, the Ladies’ Card Room, Men’s & Ladies’ Main Restrooms, the Gallery and Lounge. The Promenade will be open for Ladies’ Card Play and Bridge and will be accessed near the entrance to Lakeside. The Men’s Card Room, Ladies’ & Men’s Locker Rooms, Golf Shop, POA Administrative Offices and the Club Administrative Offices will be open. Please note the Front Desk will be relocated to the Club Administrative Offices and will still be providing you with services such as faxing, copying, etc. You will be able to access these areas through the Golf Shop or the Ladies’ & Men’s Locker Rooms.

Morning Bagel Service will continue at the FTS Center and will be moved from the Lounge to Lakeside. Lakeside will be open for lunch and dinner according to our summer hours of operation. We encourage all members to use your golf carts when visiting the club for the easiest access to the areas open for your enjoyment. A Covered Valet area will be relocated to the existing Bag Drop Area and shuttles will be provided to take you around the back of the Clubhouse to Lakeside.

As a reminder, all Golf, Tennis, Fitness and Spa amenities will remain unchanged during Phase II of the Club Improvement Plan, operating under their normal summer hours. They will continue to host our annual holiday tournaments with dining to accommodate our normal menu selection and some themed holiday items. We will not be able to accommodate the traditional Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur dinners due to facility limitations. Our apologies for this inconvenience.

We realize there will be considerable changes to your normal summer routine and appreciate your understanding, patience and cooperation. If you have any questions regarding Phase II of the Club Improvement Plan, please reach out to me or my professional staff who are happy to be of assistance.

I hope you and your families had a wonderful holiday.

See you around the Club soon,

Warm regards,

Style

I receive many comments about our team members and in general compliments about service throughout the property. It is so nice to see that membership is appreciative of the enthusiasm our team members have for the work they do here at St. Andrews Country Club. Thank you for all of your kind words regarding our staff. Our approach to finding and retaining great employees is to search first and foremost for those individuals who are altruistic by nature. In addition to a great service attitude we need to see a level of energy and enthusiasm that enables our people to keep going through rigorous seasonal demands, enthusiasm to keep team spirit alive and stay focused on our key objectives. Those key objectives are to provide kind, attentive and accommodating service to our members and their guests while maintaining standards for service, cleanliness and maintenance of the property. The foundation of our service group are our captains and senior staff employees who take the new and less experienced team members and acclimate them to our culture. They interpret standards set by the management team and follow up day in and day out to ensure every team member is

living up to or exceeding standards. In The Gallery and Lakeside we typically have half the team hired who are relatively inexperienced but who have great attitudes and can be molded and shaped to become, in short order, St. Andrews quality. Our Captains include Reagan, Frenel, Harry, Charlie, Dimitri, Wally, Ari, Apolos (Captain in Training). Each one plays a key role in shaping service and ensuring you have a quality experience every day. They train and monitor service standards daily as well as keep the 60 or so servers we have on schedule performing tasks required to handle the huge amount of covers we do (20,000 covers in December). This season, my first back to St. Andrews Country Club was a fantastic experience for all of us, we can’t wait to usher in another year and with a brand new Clubhouse on top of it. We are looking forward to a strong finish to this season with a multitude of final events in April.See you around the Club.

The kids are having a blast with all of the events they can handle right now. We had our first Kids Can Garden with a tour of the butterfly and herb gardens and learned how to pot a tomato plant. Kid’s Club in March kicked off the Color War weekend with lots of games and prizes for the little ones. Be sure to make your reservation for the Kid’s Club Closing Social on Friday, April 12! We want to send off those kids for the summer with a bang so make sure they don’t miss out!If you like Billy Joel, I sure hope you have your reservation in at the Gallery for the Billy Joel Tribute Dinner and Show featuring “Turnstiles” on Wednesday, April 3. Reservations are filling up, so make sure to get your requests in!April is treating us with two lectures this month. 6 April 2013

March Madness 2013A busy March kicked off with one of St. Andrews premier events, the 20th Annual “Men’s Classic”. This fabulous 3-day event was filled with great golf, food, and club camaraderie. The field was full with 105 players, 21 teams, and over 250 members packed the 18th green for Sunday’s final round. The Classic went into a 2-team playoff as the team made up of Captain Tony Tranese, Wayne Legum, Bob Kohansky, Jack Stievelman, and Leon Brauer defeated the team of Ken Garrod, Robert Beber, Ron Grudberg, Barry Greene, and Captain Mark Nestler. Both teams finished at 13 under par before Captain Tranese stuck it in close on the 1st playoff to seal the victory. Again St. Andrews showed its community leadership by presenting a check to the Boca Raton Regional Hospital for $25,000.

Next up was the annual Ladies’ Member-Guest held on Thursday, March 14. Tournament Chair Julie Gitlin put on an incredible day and turned the club into “The Great American Barn.” Over 176 members and guests were treated to a special day filled with great golf, fabulous gifts, and delicious food everywhere you turned. Next year you won’t want to miss out on this event.Immediately following the Ladies’ Member-Guest was the return of “Camp St. Andrews”. This Color War event pitted members in even numbered houses against those who reside in odd number homes. The 3-day event kicked off on Friday, March 15 with events in both tennis and fitness. Saturday saw more tennis and fitness events while golf kicked off Color War with chipping, putting, and a nine-hole scramble. Over 100 members participated in Saturday’s golf events and by the end of Saturday the Odd team had built a 300 point lead. Sunday started with 100 members competing in two rounds of Ryder Cup golf matches and by the end of round two only 20 points separated the two teams. On to the relay race where the Even team took the 250 points and left only the Tug-Of-War to determine the Champion. In the end the Odd team was too strong and captured the 750 points needed to name them the 2013 Color War Champion. The awards for best all-around male and female golfer went out to Shelly Harris and Neil Fox for their outstanding play and participation. The event ended with nearly 300 members gathering poolside for a spectacular cocktail and awards reception done St. Andrews Style. Be sure to check your April calendar and sign up for all the upcoming golf events. Men’s Canal Cup, Ladies’ & Men’s Club Championship, Play with the Pro Finals, Men’s Closing day, Ladies’ Spring Golf & Luncheon, and Couples Forget-Me-Not make for a busy month.

St. Andrews Women’s Golf Association has had two incredible months of “Fabulous February” and “March Madness.” The final numbers are in for Play for P.I.N.K. 130 golfers filled both our courses. We raised almost $40,000 ($10,000 more than last year). Our men even launched the first event with the promise of continued participation in their own tournament next season. Again, a special well-deserved “thank you” to Judy Falk, Shelley Harris, Alice Kent and Ellen Liebman. Our clocks were set ahead, and we continue to move forward with our busy S.A.W.G.A. calendar of events. On March 15, Julie Gitlin single handedly rustled our St. Andrews staff together to hostess a darn tootin’, guitar strummin’ Ladies’ Golf Member-Guest: The Great American Barn. The day was amazing; such creativity and excitement! Our courses were filled, as were our stomachs. Fun décor, delicious food, beautiful gifts and prizes , and, of course, great golf! We all want Chef Steve’s recipe for the delicious “western” turkey breast. Our women have been busy enjoying our regular Tuesday tournament schedule which continues year- round. Nine-holer clinics are continuing. Check our St. Andrews Club Calendar, our own SAWGA website at www.standrewscc.com under Golf / S.A.W.G.A., or call the Golf Shop so that you can participate with us. Foursomes are out competing in Play with the Pros: Paul Clivio, Ben Bauer, Terry Farino and Mike Johnson. Find out in a few weeks who won. Women’s Club Championship will conclude with finals on April 14. Women in all flights can compete. Let’s gather to congratulate the winners on Championship Sunday. We’ll be waiting for the results of our St. Andrews Golf Team led by Captain Maddy Seeman. The Challenge Cup matches are taking place at Boca West CC, Ironhorse CC, Admirals Cove, Broken Sound and St. Andrews. Good luck!!!!Information will be available shortly so that you can sign up for the Summer Swingers League chaired by Ina Rae Fox.“April Showers Bring May Flowers” is the theme for our Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, April 23, chaired by Meryl Gallatin. Colors of the day = pastels. This is open to all 9 & 18 holers who are members of S.A.W.G.A. Please join us for continental breakfast on the Terrace, golf, lunch, prizes and welcoming the 2014 Officers. Sign-up is in the Golf Shop. Here’s to great golf and fun!

As our 2013 tennis season comes to a close, there are a few recent events to report on: The 4th Annual Addison Reserve / St. Andrews Canal Cup Challenge was held on home soil this year and the pride of St. Andrews Country Club certainly didn’t disappoint. All around superb play

led the troops to a come from behind team victory seven matches to six over Addison Reserve. Thanks to all participating players for making this a memorable event. The Men’s Member - Guest tournament was played under beautiful blue skies and the two divisions of six teams each battled hard for over 2.5 hours. The Djokovic Division was won by the dynamic team of Kyle Silverman and Michael Boyer, who both played excellent tennis throughout to beat out two-time finalists Russell Weisz and Craig Shapiro. The Federer Division was also a tight contest but an exciting sudden death tiebreak win by Gordy Saul and Jay Weitzman gave them the champion’s trophy over finalists Marc Frager and Ron Ellman. Congrats to all trophy winners! The first annual COLOR WAR event was a resounding success. The event kicked off with a Jr. Tennis Pizza Party and all the kids had a fantastic time. They battled against each other in tennis, games and a fun relay race. The adult competition had over 32 players participate in the round robin tournament as well as the popular skills competition. In the end, the black team edged the white team by the slightest of margins. Thanks to all for your participation and support and I hope everyone had a great time. On a final note, please sign up in the Tennis Shop to play in our Closing Tennis Event and Luncheon on Saturday, April 6. Also scheduled for the morning is a pro set doubles exhibition between yours truly, Dave, Simon and Marcelo so come out and enjoy the fun. See you on the courts!

Fitness✔DOMORE

March 15 was one of the craziest, busiest, but exciting days in the Fitness Center ever! We had dozens of members running, biking, jumping rope and crunching everywhere. Timers were going and whistles were blowing, coaches were calling out numbers and encouraging everyone. (Except for Mitch she was threatening participants!)

At the end of it we had some impressive numbers. More surprising was the handicapping system worked pretty well overall and our goal of leveling the playing field was largely successful. Thank you Ron Gallatin. It was your math whiz capabilities that made it work.

Two of my favorite events were the team competitions on Sunday. The Relay Race and Tug of War were great fun and real crowd pleasers. It was interesting to watch more and more members get involved each day, ask questions about events, and then sign up. It was exactly what we were shooting for. The entire Fitness Team would like to thank everyone who participated, because it was you that made it all happen and made it worthwhile.

I would like to especially thank Mitch (White) and Lisa (Black) for doing such a great job with coaching and judging and recruiting. It wasn’t easy talking all the members into doing at least one event, but they did it and almost everyone ended up trying another event! We will have everything perfected in case we want to do this again next year, so be careful if you are moving, you don’t want to end up on the wrong side of the street.

As time progresses many of us are becoming more aware and cautious of the harm UV rays can cause our skin. In our day to day lives we are constantly being exposed to UV rays; the primary source is the sun. As “Sunny South Floridians”

some of the main reason we love it here; is because of its beautiful beaches and climate. UV rays can also be found in medical and salon instruments for treating skin conditions and curing products for the body. These pieces of equipment are regulated and generally will not cause any greater risk than simply walking from your front door to the car parked in front of your house. These simple facts reiterate the importance of including as part of your every day regimen an application of some sort of suncare protection cream or spray prior to facing the day. We strive to do our part to educate you on the importance of a healthy lifestyle and as part of our health and wellness philosophies, The Spa now offers organic and mineral based suncare products from Coola as a new offering to our retail selection. Stop by the spa to pick up your suncare products and make the conscious effort to avoid what can be prevented.

be keeping it going until further notice. We have added Sunday Duplicate Bridge to see if there is interest and will keep it going through April. If the participation is what we expect, we will be looking for it to happen all next season! The Closing Championship Game will be on Wednesday, April 24. Twilite Players, be sure to make reservations for the Twilite Closing Dinner on April 25. April will be the last month that the Ladies’ Card Room will be open until the completion of the Phase II construction. All bridge games will be moved to the Promenade Room thereafter. Bridge Calendars showing times and locations are located at the Front Desk.

The St. Andrews Country Club community made history on February 24 when it dedicated its 100th ambulance to Israel with the help of the American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA). It is the first, and only, group to achieve such a milestone in the U.S. “St. Andrews members have really shown us what ‘communal giving’ is all about,” said Tammy Karu, AFMDA’s Palm Beach County director. “For almost 25 years, they have dedicated themselves to MDA’s lifesaving work and it’s truly inspiring to see them reach this milestone.”Magen David Adom provides a rapid and skilled emergency medical response, including disaster, ambulance, and blood services, to Israel’s 7.8 million people. MDA is the only organization mandated by the Israeli government to serve in this role, but is not funded by the government. Instead, MDA relies on funding from donors around the world.

And the Color War Championship goes to…. Well if you weren’t there, I am sure you are hearing about it. It was a close competition, but in the end, the odd addresses took the win for Camp St. Andrews! Friday, March 15 started the weekend with the Fitness Cardio Challenges, and the Junior Tennis Competition. The Fitness Center was wall to wall with participants which made it instantly fierce with competition. Over at Tennis, the kids were having a ball with Aaron, Dave and Simon on the courts with all sorts of games and target competitions. Saturday, March 16 started early with more Fitness challenges testing agility with different exercises. Tennis tested the skills of many with contest and Round Robin Tennis. Rounding out the day was Golf with putting and chipping contests and the favorite, 9 hole scramble. There were more attendees for all three departments than we have ever had before. The competitors were ready for the final showdown on Sunday, March 17. Over in Golf, we started the final day with the Ryder Cup. Sunday not only brought the teams, but many families came out to cheer on the contestants for the relay race and Tug of War Challenges that took place on the Driving Range. The ultimate MC and Chairman/ Co-Director of the event, Ron Gallatin, brought out the game faces in the competing teams as he refereed the final events. The Tug of War was the deal breaker for the winner. The final stop was the poolside cocktail party and award ceremony. The best all-around female and male tennis player awards went to Susan Emby and Fred Cohen. The best all-around female and male golfer awards went to Shelley Harris and Neil Fox. The best all-around female and male “Gym Rat” awards went to Candace Mesner and Charlie Emby. Best all-around campers were Wendy Kohansky and Randy Katz while the Odd team took home the Camp St. Andrews Color War Championship. Thanks to Ron Gallatin, our club had an incredible weekend with all sorts of activities for all abilities and ages. It was too great to not become a tradition that sets this club apart and makes us the “Best of the Best.” A million thanks to Mr. Ron Gallatin and all who were involved in coming together to make this event such an incredible success.
