GOSPEL MEDITATIONGOSPEL MEDITATIONGOSPEL MEDITATION
"This is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can
reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dis-solved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity ? and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God.
LIVE THE LITURGYLIVE THE LITURGYLIVE THE LITURGY
Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed, the tiniest of seeds. When planted, the tiny mustard seed grows into a t remendous tree with
large branches. So, too, in each of our lives, small things can have profound effects. God can use one of our more insignificant gestures to radically change another person's life. It may be the kindness of a smile, our willingness to accommodate someone, listening to someone's story, helping some-one who is hurting, standing up for someone who is right, or complimenting someone on something they did. We all have God-given gifts and talents. Our task is to use them creatively, consistently, lovingly, and generously. We trust that God will take care of the rest.
EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP
You could buy a meal for a person who is hungry or for a person who just ate a feast. You could spend time with a lonely person or with someone who has more friends than you. You could step forward to join a parish committee that your experience and knowledge can help, or you can join a ministry where you will constantly struggle to figure out what to do. All of the above actions involve you giving and sharing yourself and your gifts. But not all of these actions will bear good fruit. If a sower sows seeds only on rocky or weed-infested soil, nothing of great value will grow. But if that same sower plants his seeds in rich soil, then the harvest will one day be great. In all of the soils, the seed is being sown, but it is not the act of sowing that is the most important factor. In living a stewardship way of life, we must discern how best to share our gifts. Discernment needs the Holy Spirit and a desire to follow God's will, not our own. Our own desires and misconceptions can cause us to use our gifts unwisely. The more mindful we are of how, when, and why we are sharing ourselves, than the greater the impact for God's glory. God wants all of you, but not in a way that is without understanding and discernment. He wants you to shine as a light to the world through your stewardship just as He came to you as the Light of the World in baptism. You can't shine brightly if the match does not hit the wick. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

WHY DO WE DO THAT? -
CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED
Ques on:
If God knows everything we do, why do we need to go to Confes-
sion?
Answer: Another term for the Sacrament of Confession is the
Sacrament of Reconcilia on. We go to this sacrament not only to
confess our sins, but to be reconciled with God. Of course, this
begs the ques on, "If I can pray to God on my own, why can't I
be reconciled to God on my own?" In the seven sacraments, we
recognize the importance of community. Sacraments like Bap-
sm or Matrimony happen in the context of the wider church to
remind us of the communal impact of our lives. We are not alone
in our walk of faith!
We don't need to confess our sins in front of the whole commu-
nity -- thank God! But going to the Sacrament of Reconcilia on is
a tangible reminder that our sins affect not only ourselves and
our rela onship with God, but others as well. Jesus gave his
Apostles authority to forgive sins in his name. Through this sacra-
ment, we are really, truly forgiven by God Himself. We receive an
outpouring of grace and strength to sin no more and our rela-
onship with Christ and his Body, the Church, are restored.

St. Romuald was born in Ravenna and led a self-indulgent life
as a young man, but when he saw his father kill an opponent in a
duel, he fled to a monastery. Romuald yearned for a stricter life
than he found there, and so he withdrew to become a hermit.
Eventually, he founded the Camaldolese branch of the Benedic-
ne family, integra ng community life with the solitary life. His
monks live and work in individual hermitages by come together
to celebrate the Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours.

St. Aloysius Gonzaga (1568-1591) was born to a noble family
in Italy who had him des ned for the military. While recovering
from an illness, he read the lives of the saints and spent me in
prayer. As a result, Aloysius decided to dedicate himself to God
as a Jesuit. Most of his family was against it, but he joined any-
way, making his vows in 1587. In 1591, the plague broke out in
Rome. Aloysius volunteered to care for the vic ms and became
sick himself. He recovered, but he never became health and he
died within a few months. Many schools are name for him be-
cause he is the patron saint of Catholic youth.
June 22-Op!onal Memorial of St. Paulinus of Nola, Bishop, Sts.
John Fisher, Bishop, and Thomas More, Martyrs
St. Paulinus of Nola (c.354-431) was raised in a family of
wealthy poli cians in Bordeaux. His interests were varied; every-
thing from poetry, from traveling to governing. A&er the death
of a newly born son, he and his wife, Therasia, gave away the
family fortune to the poor and to the Church. St Paulinus and
Therasia moved to Italy, where they began to live, along with
some other friends, a life of prayer and service. They lived in a
two-story building in which the first floor provided a place to rest
for the wayward and the lost, and the second floor was their
place of residence based on the rhythms of monas cism. Gaining
a reputa on of holiness, St. Paulinus was ordained a priest and
was eventually made a bishop of Nola.
St. John Fisher (1469-1535) born in Yorkshire, was an astute
scholar recognized for his profound insight into the complex
ques ons of life. He held many posi ons of esteem, serving as a
tutor to the young Henry VIII, Chancellor of Cambridge Universi-
ty, and Bishop of Rochester
St. Thomas More, born in London, was a family man charac-
terized by a deep affec on for his wife and three daughters. He,
too held many powerful posi ons in the Church and in society, in
par cular, he was a Parliament lawyer, Speaker of the House of
Commons and Chancellor of England.
Both St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, lived during the
me of great upheaval and reforma on. Both were friends and
consultants to King Henry VIII, and both were executed because
they would not declare the king’s supremacy over the Church.
