FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Praised be Jesus Christ! I recently came across a beautiful story that seems fitting to share with you on this most glorious day of the year. Jeremy was born with multiple physical and mental challenges, but his parents did their very best to give him a happy and relatively normal childhood. Added to his many crosses was the reality that he would not live a full life. In spite of it all, he was a joyful boy and loved going to school, though he struggled mightily. His 2nd grade teacher, Miss Miller, worked hard to make things go well for him, but Jeremy rarely was able to keep up with his classmates. Miss Miller suggested to his parents that Jeremy would be better served in a special school, but his parents begged her to give him another chance. Poor Miss Miller realized that there wasn’t much else she could do so she prayed to God for patience and greater love for Jeremy. Even in the midst of trying to teach her other 18 students, she did her best to show forbearance for Jeremy’s many quirks and his daily struggles to comprehend the directions she gave. One day Jeremy limped to her desk and exclaimed loudly, “I love you, Miss Miller!” The other children snickered and Miss Miller turned red but she did manage to stammer, “Wh-why, that’s very nice, Jeremy. Now please take your seat.” Spring came and the children were excitedly looking forward to Easter. Miss Miller told them the story of Jesus and then, to emphasize the idea of new life springing forth, she gave each of the children a large plastic egg. She instructed the children to “take this home and bring it back tomorrow with something inside that shows new life.” After the kids departed it occurred to Miss Miller that she should call Jeremy’s parents to make sure he understood the directions. However, as soon as she got home it was one thing after another and only as she was getting ready to go to bed did she remember her intention to call Jeremy’s parents. By then it was too late. The next day at school was full of energy and anticipation as each of the children couldn’t wait for Miss Miller to open their eggs. The first had a flower in it, “certainly a sign of new life,” Miss Miller exclaimed. Then there was one with a mossy rock – Billy shouted out, “My Dad helped me – the moss is alive!” Then Miss Miller opened an egg that was empty. Embarrassed, she felt even worse about forgetting to call Jeremy’s parents. As inconspicuously as she could, she put the empty egg aside and reached for another. Suddenly Jeremy spoke up, “Miss Miller, aren’t you going to talk about my egg?” Flustered, Miss Miller replied, “But Jeremy, your egg is empty.” After a brief pause, Jeremy responded, “Yes, but Jesus’ tomb was empty too.” Time stopped. When she could speak again, Miss Miller asked Jeremy, “Do you know why the tomb was empty?” “Oh yes!” Jeremy exclaimed.” “Jesus was killed and put in there. Then His Father raised Him up!” Miss Miller was filled with a joy all the more beautiful because it was so unexpected. Jeremy’s health took a sudden turn after Easter and three months later he died. Those who paid their respects at the funeral home were surprised to see 18 plastic eggs on top of his casket, all of them empty. A very happy and holy Easter to you and your loved ones – may God grant you His joy and peace! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin
