T he Ascension of the Lord Look, Up in the Sky! Around holidays, people tend to look fondly back

on past celebrations and romanticize old relationships. For some, remembering the past is the best part of their holiday. That is the image we get from the first reading as the apos-tles look up to heaven after the Ascension. They think it is Jesus' last Resurrection appearance and that they will never see him again. Maybe they were still amazed at seeing him ascend that way. Or maybe they were remembering all the things he said and did with them. We too sometimes look at the great feasts of Christmas and Easter in that way. We may dwell on the beauty of the deco-rations, on the innocence of the baby Jesus, on the horror of his passion and death, or on the wonder of his resurrection. Then when the holy day is over, we go back to our normal routine. Perhaps we need an angel to chide us for "looking at the sky." The angels were trying to tell the apostles two things. One was that Jesus would return as he left--in glory. This was not a time to say goodbye but a time of hope; the Lord who had changed their lives so radically would change the world next. While they certainly should remember Jesus and all he taught them, they should also expect to see him again. Once

they received the Holy Spirit, they would see how Jesus was present in the church, the mystical Body of Christ. The second thing the angels were telling them was to begin following Jesus' command to spread the good news to all nations. They would soon realize that Jesus was alive in them, not just as a fond memory, but with the power of his Spirit. With this power they would do mighty deeds in Je-sus' name and be his witnesses to the world. Because of what the apostles accomplished, we are now Je-sus' witnesses to the world. We celebrate his death and resurrec-tion not as a fond memory, but to en-courage each other to spread the Good News. We too have the hope of seeing Jesus come in glory, even as we see him now with the eyes of faith. Tom Schmidt, Copy-right (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

The Buzz 7th & 8th Grades Take a Pilgrimage to the

Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine

On May 17th, the 7th & 8th Grade classes boarded a bus to the Our Lady of Gua-dalupe Shrine in Des Plaines, Illinois. The spiritual director on this Marian pil-grimage was our very own Father Luis Gutierrez. When the bus arrived at the Shrine, the students were greeted by Father Manuel Padilla and Mr. Joaquin Martinez, who gave a tour of the Shrine and talked about the Shrine’s history. Father Esequiel Sanchez, rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, also welcomed the students and stressed the significance of opening up our hearts, praying to Our Lady of Guadalupe, and also offering heartfelt petitions to Her.

In the beautiful chapel, Father Luis gave a presentation on Saint Cristóbal Magallanes and Companions who were martyred between 1915 and 1937, by

shooting, hanging, or other means, throughout Mexico, for carrying out their priestly ministry despite laws which forbade them from practicing our Catholic Faith. In fact, St. Cristóbal is an ancestor of Father Luis. We can all be inspired and proud of our Catholic Saints who willingly and gladly give up their earthly lives, for “the greater glory of God.” As many of these Martyr’s stated when they were about to be killed, “Viva el Cristo Rey!” (Long

live Christ the King).

After a peaceful and spiritually uplifting day with Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Holy Family students and teachers arrived back to school feeling refreshed and spiritually revitalized!

The Influence of Catholic Education on the Life of a Child Public schools cannot compare with the educational environment we provide at Holy Family Catholic School. Our students are well prepared by our academic program. We consistently receive positive feedback from both Montini Catholic High School and Immacu-late Conception College Prep on how well our students perform. At Holy Family, special subjects like Technology, Art, Music, PE, and Spanish, and extracurricular activities including athletics, choir, chess, engineering, and guitar enrich the students’ academic ex-perience. Our dedicated teachers, Resource Specialist, instructional assistants, Social Worker, and Interventionist coordinate efforts to meet the individual needs of all students. Furthermore, with plans to create an integrated library and technology lab, and expand the Spanish language program, HFCS is ready to help your child meet the challenges of the future. However, what really sets HFCS apart is our Catholic culture. In the Diocese of Joliet, our motto is: We Teach More! We strive to help our students see all that is true, good, and beautiful in the world and help them grow in their personal relationships with Jesus. In so doing, we further the mission of the Church to develop modern day Disciples of Christ. At HFCS, students realize they belong to something bigger. They begin to see how they can change the world. Holy Family School, Faith—Family—Future!

For more information and a tour, please call our Principal, Linda Kelly, at 630-766-0116.
