“ After He had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into

a boat and precede Him to the other side, while he dismissed the

crowds. After doing so, he went up to the mountain by Himself

to pray.”

Matthew 14:22-23

The psychologist Carl Jung once said, “Busyness is not of the

devil, busyness is the devil!” Stewardship is not about

increasing our activities, but about establishing priorities in

how we utilize our gifts. One of those priorities is prayer. Do

we take time out to be alone with God?

Have you remembered St. Joseph Church in your will?

1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-13a; Ps 85:9, 10, 11-12, 13-14; Rom 9:1-5; Mt 14:22-33

During the fourth watch of the night, He came

toward them, walking on the sea. Psalm 67:2

The Romans divided the night into four watches of three hours

each. The watches extended from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The fourth

watch was from 3 to 6 a.m. It was during the fourth watch that

Jesus came walking on the water to rescue his frightened

apostles who were in their boat, struggling to survive a severe

storm. Jesus got into the boat to calm the sea and their fears. I

received a new insight into this story when I attended a lecture

by the famous D. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. She said it’s an ideal

time to visit the hospital between 3 and 6 in the morning—a

dark and lonely time when the sleeping pills wear off. Then the

patients often experience depressive worries about their health,

their families and their future. We hope the ill, injured or those

who are afraid will find courage, knowing Jesus still walks to

them “during the fourth watch.”

2017 Peter’s Pence Collection Next weekend, August 19-20, we will have a second collections. The

Peter’s Pence Collection provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs

to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds

benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including

victims of war, oppression, and disasters. As Pope Francis has reminded

us during this Year of Mercy: “the time has come for the Church to take

up the joyful call to mercy once more . . . Mercy is the force that

awakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the

future with hope.” Join our Holy Father as a witness of mercy for those

who are suffering with your contribution to this collection.
