...in the presence of the angels I will sing your praise..

Psalm 138:1

When I was bapitized many years ago, my godfather gave me

a gift: M.J. Hummel’s depiction of the guardian angel, which I

still have. There’s a deep peacefulness in the painting, showing

an angel leading a small child by the hand as they walk

together. The child, wearing sturdy boots, carries a hiking

staff. In their path is a snake with its head raised, yet neither

the angel nor the child seem afraid. Instead, they’re fully

attentive to each other’s presence and to the path of the snake

as they move forward.

This painting reminds me that, so many times in the Scriptures

when angels announce startling news, their message is often

accompained by the words, “Don’t be afraid.”

May we live this day and the days to come conscious of, and

grateful for, the presence of these angelic protestors and

guides, in whose company we can find our authentic voice and

sing God’s praise.

ROOM IN THE INN Homeless Program Beginning in Nelson County November 1

Room In The Inn, an inter-denominational help-the-homeless program, consists of congregations of all faiths

working together to provide small, independent shelters within their own facilities. Each congregation has

chosen one night a week to welcome no more than 12 homeless individuals as guests November 1 to March

31, the coldest months of the year. All guest are screened and vetted for our volunteers safety

St. Joseph Basilica has signed up to be the host church on Tuesday nights. The location will be the

second floor of St. Vincent De Paul’s building at 310 N. Second St. The entrance is in the rear.

There are many ways you can Volunteer:

• Prepare and serve meals: dinner, breakfast, and a sack lunch.

• Assist with set up or clean up.

• Spend time fellowshipping with our guests during meals, playing games, or watching movies.

• Share your talents: music, devotion time, craft, etc.

• Serve as overnight hosts - we’ll need at least one male and one female scheduled

• Washing laundry

Sheltering the homeless is a perfect example of what the MERCY is all about. So many times God

speaks of helping those who are less fortunate and how blessing them, in turn, blesses us. Jesus spoke in

Matthew 25:40: “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”

We can’t solve the problems of the homeless but we CAN provide them with the basic necessities: food,

shelter, and people who care. I hope you will join us in this wonderful ministry. For more information and

testimonies about Room In The Inn, please check out their website: http://www.roomintheinn.org. Hardin,

Bullitt, Fayette and Warren counties currently have Room In The Inns, and most Tennessee counties.

Washington and Marion counties are watching our program closely and will most likely be starting their own

soon. To volunteer, please call Chris Hovan 502-773-1130.

The Twenty-Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time

A woman’s risk of breaking a hip is equal to her risk of developing breast cancer, uterine and ovarian cancer combined, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation website. This is why Basilica of Saint Joseph Proto Cathedral is hosting Life Line Screening, the nation’s leading pro-vider of preventive health screenings on Monday, October 16, 2017. The screenings provided include an ultra-sound of the heel, which is a first-rung osteoporosis risk test. This is an important test to take during October, a month dedicated to recognizing bone and joint disorders such as osteoporosis. Screenings include tests to check for blocked carotid arteries, atrial fibrillation, and high blood pressure, which are the three leading risk factors for stroke. Nearly 800,000 strokes will occur this year. Other tests check for abdominal aortic aneurysms and PAD, also called “hardening of the arteries” in the legs. Many events also offer blood tests, including cholesterol, glucose and c-reactive protein screenings, as well as take-home colon cancer early detection tests. Screening packages start at $139. Single tests cost around $70. For more information regarding the screenings or to schedule an appointment, call 1-888-653-6441 or go to www.lifelinescreening.com/communitycircle or text the word circle to 797979. Pre-registration is required.

On November 4th St. Joseph

Marriage Moment

Ways to turn your spouse off #2 - Be married to social media. Technology and the internet can save us a lot of time, but it

can also be addictive and take a lot of time. Ask your spouse if you’re over committed to the internet?

Parenting Pointer

Respect Life Month. When things are not going well for you or your child (and there are plenty of days like this) try

reversing your attitude. Think of one thing that you are grateful for this day. Ask your child to stretch to think of something

too.
