SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C

In the first reading of today, David had the opportunity to kill Saul, his enemy but he did not. Saul was the first king of Israel who wanted to kill David because God had rejected him as king and God chose David to replace him as the new king of Israel. The Psalm is a song of praise to God for his mercy upon us. In the second reading, Paul said that as we bear the image of Adam, so shall we bear the image of Jesus Christ. In the gospel reading, Jesus Christ challenged his disciples to be merciful as God is merciful to his people. True children resemble their parents in many ways. True disciples follow the instructions and examples of their master. We are children of God, therefore we should resemble God in our behaviors. We are disciples of Jesus, therefore we should follow his instructions and examples. Jesus is challenging us today to love our enemies just as David did to Saul; turn the other cheek, give to those who ask of our help, bless those who curse us, pray for those who treated us badly, lend without expecting repayment, judge not lest you be judged as well. We are challenged to love others just as God loves us. God’s love is without conditions or discrimination against anyone. We are challenged to forgive those who have offended us. We are called to practice what we say in the Lord’s Prayer: “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” This means if we do not forgive those who have wronged us, God should not forgive us our sins. The teaching of Jesus on the love of enemies and forgiveness is in contrast with the teaching in the Old Testament in Exodus 21: 23-25 where we read…an eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth and so on and so forth. That is what many people do in our world today. There is no love and forgiveness in our society. Jesus came to review and update and correct this type of teaching in the Old Testament and attitudes in our society. Jesus tells us that the right thing to do is to love others, and be merciful as our heavenly father is. We are called to love everybody without discriminating against them for whatever reasons. Remember that two wrongs cannot make one right. Instead, they will be equal to two wrongs. The best way to correct a wrong action is by countering it with love and forgiveness. Love is the most effective weapon we can use to conquer hatred and win our enemies and bring them to God. But an eye for an eye will render many people blind in our society, or a tooth for a tooth will render many people toothless. The lack of love and forgiveness breeds more evil and misery in our society, but love and forgiveness breeds peace and happiness in our society. Therefore, as children of God let us resemble our heavenly father in love and mercy. As disciples of Jesus, let us follow his instructions and examples to love and be compassionate as our heavenly father is.

World Youth Day 2019 - update

Esta es la juventud del Papa could be heard chanted anywhere you walked in the city, the crowds were unbelievable, and every-where you turned there were encounters with individuals from half-way across the world. World Youth Day was underway, and

the Church was alive in Panama City, Panama! During the week-long experience that took place January 22-27, the central American city had hundreds of thousands of pilgrims descend on their streets to engage in an opportunity like none other. The worldwide church came

together to celebrate the joy of our Catholic faith, to recognize just how similar we are in our faith journeys, to share in our differences, and to join as one in Eucharistic celebrations. Throughout the week, pilgrims experienced catechesis sessions given by bishops, joined in festivals and large group gatherings throughout the city, and participated in a night of Adoration fol-lowed by the Sunday liturgy with our Holy Father, Pope Francis.

As representatives from St. Jude, three individuals from the parish joined the delegation from the Dio-cese of Dallas – Bridget Hanafin, Jordan Hawkins, and Michael Ingram.

While Bridget had previously participated in World Youth Day in Brazil, this was Jordan and Michael’s first time engaging in a World Youth Day pilgrimage. Upon returning home, all three spoke to the beauty of the worldwide church – the universality that is truly present in our faith. As Jordan put it, “World Youth Day was an amazing opportunity to be able to experience the worldwide church, and really get to experience the same faith we all share but from different cultures and different back-grounds from all over the world. World Youth Day really made me appreciate the faith that not only I have, but that so many other people have across the world. “ Michael similarly ex-pressed “the Universality of the Catholic Church was on full dis-play.” There were many highlights throughout the pilgrimage experience, with it all being so hard to convey adequately through words on a paper or even in a conversation. The joy that surrounded the entire week was incredible; the authentic witness of bold Catholics around the world was inspiring, and celebrating the Eucharistic feast with a field full of believers was indescribable. Among the large group experience, there were also many smaller significant moments, and as Michael shared, “some of the highlights were morning catechesis sessions, din-ner with Bishop Burns, and simply walking around meeting pil-grims from other countries.”

While World Youth Day may have concluded at the end of Janu-ary, the fire and fruit of the pilgrimage will carry on!

The next World Youth Day will be held in Lisbon, Portugal in 2022.

FURNITURE MINISTRY

The Furniture Ministry collects gently used furniture and household items for families in need. This ministry falls under the People Helping People (PHP) umbrella. There is always a need for volunteers to help pick up and deliver the items. Volunteers are placed on an email list and notified of dates, times and locations for pickup/deliveries. Typically we try to schedule Saturdays, however, weekdays are also a possibility. You do not need a truck to be a part of this ministry.

We are able to accept most gently used furniture and household items (including couches, chairs, dining tables/chairs, side tables, lamps, mattresses in good condition, dressers, pots/pans, utensils, towels, sheets, etc.) We are unable to accept large tube TV’s. We will accept washers and dryers IF we have a family who needs those items. We generally pick up on Saturdays.

We work closely with the Samaritan Inn (local homeless shelter) with clients who are transitioning from homelessness back into housing. Your furniture donations are greatly appreciated by these families.

CURRENT NEEDS

PHP Furniture Ministry is in need of pots and pans, new and gently used bedding for the families they serve. In addition, we need people that have a vehicle with a hitch that can pull a trailer to help pick up furniture from those donating the items. Contact Cheryl Griffith at [email protected] for questions.
