Thinking of Becoming Catholic? If you are thinking about becoming Catholic, then the Rite of
Christian Initiation for Adults program (RCIA) is for you. RCIA
teaches people about our church and prepares them to become
Catholic, if they wish.
God often speaks to people through others…especially their
relatives and friends. Do you have a friend or relative who would
like to learn more about God…and about your Catholic faith? The
program will begin in September, so now is the time to invite the
people you care about to learn what it’s like to be Catholic. For
more info call 812-934-2603.
Beat the Bid Booth Parish People serving People of the Parish! We are looking for all kinds of services
and items for the Beat the Bid booth this year that might bring a bid of $25.00 or

an item, service, tickets to a sporting event or play, or would like to donate an item,
please call the parish office. We are still in need of someone to chair this booth.
Country Store The Country Store will be in need of donations of jellies, pickles,
beets, salsa or any other home canned goods you might have. If
you don’t can vegetables, maybe you could make some fudge, bake
cookies, bread, pastries, cakes or pies. If you sew, think about
making aprons, potholders, coasters, etc. If you crochet or knit,
maybe consider making doilies, scarves, small lap blankets. If by
chance you happen to have extra fresh garden produce, please consider donating
it to the Country Store. Questions, contact Peggy Folkman, 933-0788.

DID YOU KNOW . . . Part II George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore, had decided before his death that
Maryland (Mary's Land), was not to be a colony just for Catholics, but a place where
Christians of different denominations could practice their faith without
impediment. Religious toleration became the official policy of the Maryland colony,
as did recognition of the Native Americans as a separate people with inherent
rights. This was extraordinary for the time. These two progressive pieces of 17th-
century policy foreshadowed the provisions of the U.S. Constitution guaranteeing
separation of church and state and subsequent laws enacted to protect civil rights.
St. Clements Island, Maryland: Where the first Catholic Mass in what would
become the United States was celebrated; Where Jesuits erected the first cross in
what would be the U.S.; Where settlers, seeking religious freedom in the New World
and granting it to others, would later be denied this freedom themselves. In 1654,
Protestants overthrew the proprietary government of Maryland. The new regime
outlawed the Catholic faith and repealed the Act of Toleration of 1649. In 1692,
Anglicanism was decreed the official religion of the state. Understanding what the
first Catholics endured both in Europe and the U.S. should help us today to
understand the importance of standing up for religious freedom in our own times.
FESTIVAL RAFFLE TICKETS If you have not picked up your raffle tickets, PLEASE do so this
