Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary, On this Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the Church, I want to share with you what Saint John Paul II had to say on the subject of the Holy Spirit and prayer:

“The breath of the divine life, the Holy Spirit, in its simplest and most common manner, expresses itself and makes itself felt in prayer. It is a beautiful and salutary thought that, wher-ever people are praying in the world, there the Holy Spirit is, the living breath of prayer. It is a beautiful and salutary thought to recognize that, if prayer is offered throughout the world, in the past, in the present and in the future, equally widespread is the presence and action of the Holy Spirit, who "breathes" prayer in the heart of man in all the endless range of the most varied situations and conditions, some-times favorable and sometimes unfavorable to the spiritual and religious life. Many times, through the influence of the Spirit, prayer rises from the human heart in spite of prohibitions and persecutions and even official proclama-tions regarding the non-religious or even atheis-tic character of public life. Prayer always re-mains the voice of all those who apparently have no voice-and in this voice there always echoes that "loud cry" attributed to Christ by the Letter to the Hebrews. Prayer is also the rev-elation of that abyss which is the heart of man: a depth which comes from God and which on-ly God can fill, precisely with the Holy Spirit. We read in Luke: "If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him."

The Holy Spirit is the gift that comes into man's heart together with prayer. In prayer he manifests himself first of all and above all as the gift that "helps us in our weakness." This is the magnificent thought developed by St. Paul in the Letter to the Romans, when he writes: "For we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words." Therefore, the Holy Spirit not only enables us to pray, but guides us "from within" in prayer: he is present in our prayer and

gives it a divine dimension. Thus "he who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." Prayer through the power of the Holy Spirit becomes the ever more mature expres-sion of the new man, who by means of this prayer participates in the divine life.

Our difficult age has a special need of prayer. In the course of history-both in the past and in the present-many men and women have borne witness to the importance of pray-er by consecrating themselves to the praise of God and to the life of prayer, especially in monasteries and convents. So, too, recent years have been seeing a growth in the num-ber of people who, in ever more widespread movements and groups, are giving first place to prayer and seeking in prayer a renewal of their spiritual life. This is a significant and com-forting sign, for from this experience there is coming a real contribution to the revival of prayer among the faithful, who have been helped to gain a clearer idea of the Holy Spirit as he who inspires in hearts a profound yearn-ing for holiness. In many individuals and many communities there is a growing awareness that, even with all the rapid progress of technologi-cal and scientific civilization, and despite the real conquests and goals attained, man is threatened, humanity is threatened. In the face of this danger, and indeed already expe-riencing the frightful reality of man's spiritual decadence, individuals and whole communi-ties, guided as it were by an inner sense of faith, are seeking the strength to raise man up again, to save him from himself, from his own errors and mistakes that often make harmful his very conquests. And thus they are discovering prayer, in which the "Spirit who helps us in our weakness" manifests himself. In this way the times in which we are living are bringing the Holy Spirit closer to the many who are returning to prayer.

Muy Estimados Amigos y Familias de Sta. Marga-rita María, Hoy el día de Pentecostés, el cumpleaños de la Igle-sia, quiero compartir con ustedes unas palabras del Santo Juan Pablo II sobe el Espíritu Santo y nuestra oración:

“El soplo de la vida divina, el Espíritu Santo, en su manera más simple y común, se manifiesta y se hace sentir en la oración. Es hermoso y saluda-ble pensar que, en cualquier lugar del mundo donde se ora, allí está el Espíritu Santo, soplo vital de la oración. Es hermoso y saludable reconocer que si la oración está difundida en todo el orbe, en el pasado, en el presente y en el futuro, de igual modo está ex-tendida la presencia y la acción del Espíritu Santo, que « alienta » la oración en el corazón del hombre en toda la inmensa gama de las mas diversas situa-ciones y de las condiciones, ya favorables, ya adver-sas a la vida espiritual y religiosa. Muchas veces, bajo la acción del Espíritu, la oración brota del cora-zón del hombre no obstante las prohibiciones y per-secuciones, e incluso las proclamaciones oficiales sobre el carácter arreligioso o incluso ateo de la vida pública. La oración es siempre la voz de todos aque-llos que aparentemente no tienen voz, y en esta voz resuena siempre aquel « poderoso clamor », que la Carta a los Hebreos atribuye a Cristo. La oración es también la revelación de aquel abismo que es el corazón del hombre: una profundidad que es de Dios y que sólo Dios puede colmar, precisamente con el Espíritu Santo. Leemos en San Lucas: « Si, pues, vosotros, siendo malos, sabéis dar cosas buenas a vuestros hijos, cuánto más el Padre del cielo dará el Espíritu Santo a los que se lo pidan ».

El Espíritu Santo es el don, que viene al cora-zón del hombre junto con la oración. En ella se ma-nifiesta ante todo y sobre todo como el don que « viene en auxilio de nuestra debilidad ». Es el rico pensamiento desarrollado por San Pablo en la Carta a los Romanos cuando escribe: « Nosotros no sabe-mos cómo pedir para orar como conviene; mas el mismo Espíritu intercede por nosotros con gemidos inefables ». Por consiguiente, el Espíritu Santo no sólo hace que oremos, sino que nos guía « interior-mente » en la oración, supliendo nuestra insuficien-cia y remediando nuestra incapacidad de orar. Está presente en nuestra oración y le da una dimensión divina. De esta manera, « el que escruta los corazo-nes conoce cual es la aspiración del Espíritu y que

su intercesión a favor de los santos es según Dios ». La oración por obra del Espíritu Santo llega a ser la expresión cada vez más madura del hombre nue-vo, que por medio de ella participa de la vida divina.

Nuestra difícil época tiene especial necesi-dad de la oración. Si en el transcurso de la historia —ayer como hoy— muchos hombres y mujeres han dado testimonio de la importancia de la oración, con-sagrándose a la alabanza a Dios y a la vida de ora-ción, sobre todo en los Monasterios, con gran benefi-cio para la Iglesia, en estos años va aumentando tam-bién el número de personas que, en movimientos o grupos cada vez más extendidos, dan la primacía a la oración y en ella buscan la renovación de la vida espiritual. Este es un síntoma significativo y conso-lador, ya que esta experiencia ha favorecido real-mente la renovación de la oración entre los fieles que han sido ayudados a considerar mejor el Espíritu Santo, que suscita en los corazones un profundo an-helo de santidad.

En muchos individuos y en muchas comuni-dades madura la conciencia de que, a pesar del verti-ginoso progreso de la civilización técnico-científica y no obstante las conquistas reales y las metas alcan-zadas, el hombre y la humanidad están amenaza-dos. Frente a este peligro, y habiendo ya experimen-tado antes la espantosa realidad de la decadencia es-piritual del hombre, personas y comunidades enteras —como guiados por un sentido interior de la fe— buscan la fuerza que sea capaz de levantar al hom-bre, salvarlo de sí mismo, de su propios errores y desorientaciones, que con frecuencia convierten en nocivas sus propias conquistas. Y de esta manera descubren la oración, en la que se manifiesta « el Espíritu que viene en ayuda de nuestra flaqueza ». De este modo, los tiempos en que vivimos acercan al Espíritu Santo muchas personas que vuelven a la oración.

THIS WEEK IN SMM HISTORY

June 3, 1961—The Sacred Heart Guild of the Altar Society held a “Chef of the Year” contest as part of their annual Gourmet Dinner. Eight ladies participated as con-testants. Marion Yoklavich won the compe-tition with her lasagna. Her prize was a new set of Corning ware. June 5, 1976 - The school marked it 25th anniversary at the 5pm Mass followed by a reception in the hall. Many former teachers and students attended. June 5, 2017 - The parish begins a pew re-furbishment project. The pews are re-moved from the church for two and a half weeks and are replaced with chairs in the interim. This is the first time the pews have been refurbished since they were originally installed in the 1950s. The cost of the pro-ject was $85,000. June 7, 1970 - The parish celebrated Father Hegarty’s 25th year as SMM Pastor. He died six months later. June 10, 1995 - Parishioner Dick Corwin was ordained a permanent deacon. He was the first deacon ordained from the parish. Following Dick, Craig Siegman (2000), Rick Soria (2001), Dan Wallace (2006),and Che-to Mendoza (2013) Have been ordained deacons for the archdiocese and our par-ish.

A JOURNEY OF FAITH My name is April Gonzalez and I am here to share part of my journey with you. My creator, a score keeper, and divine judge who saw me fall short me and me again. This was my defini on of who God was in my life before I started the RCIA program. My family grew up in a Bap st church and I fell away when I was s ll young. I knew Jesus died for my sins I also KNEW I was a sinner and did I REALLY know my eternal address?

I found myself a ending St. Margaret Mary for this first me, as a new family, with a small child and a husband who had been to St Margaret Mary but hadn’t been back to visit in a while. I came to my first mass wearing a huge judg-mental suit of armor. Growing up, everything I heard about the Catholic faith was nega ve and my head and heart were in no state of grace. I sat through Mass with my eyes wide open and my heart shut.

It was thru mee ng Deacon Rick and Maureen, a ending their engagement encounter program, having him marry me and Joe, and having our son bap zed that led my heart to start so ening towards the idea of joining RCIA. It wasn’t un l my second son was born, that I had a true “come to Jesus” moment in the back of the church while listening to Joey Albera share his RCIA tes mony last year. I felt the tears streaming down my face and I knew I was ready.

Upon joining the RCIA program I was overwhelmed at first with the informa on and the people God had brought into my life. I was told I would make bonds with my fellow classmates. Each week we broke open the gospel, listened to and supported one other. The dismissal process at Mass gave me me to ask my ques ons and find the understand-ing I needed. One of my biggest turning points was when I asked, “why do I even need to do this, why is the church tes ng me?” With a smile, Deacon Rick answered, “April, the church is not tes ng you, this is a me for you to test the church.” I came to class with all my deepest judgments to-ward the church and with each passing class I le feeling safe, supported, and loved.

The last year holds many moments filled with tears of happiness, tears of sorrow, and laughter that will forever be held within me. Being able to stand up with my brothers and sisters in Christ, walk over to the Holy Water, and have my sins washed away is an experience that truly cannot be put into words. In the past I didn’t think that being bap zed was that important , I now see it as such a gi .

My fellow brothers and sisters if you feel like you might be where I was -lost and looking—filled with judgment and con-cern, not sure of your eternal address. You can either chose to move towards God or away from Him. We are never just si ng s ll. Our church is here… ready and wai ng… wai ng to open her arms to you and welcome you. I thank you for your love, your prayers, and support during my journey through the RCIA program.

EL ESPIRITU SANTO EL ALMA DE LA IGLESIA Por Humberto Beltrán

Hoy es el día de Pentecostés. Día de gran gozo. En este día, Dios compartió con la humanidad la vida de su Hijo. En este día, Dios lleno todo el mundo con su Espíritu. En este día, Dios formó su iglesia y de muchas lenguas sacó una sola voz para profesar una sola fe. El día de Pentecostés que conmemora la venida del Espíritu Santo sobre el Pueblo de Dios completa la celebración de la Pascua. La gloria de una festividad se expresa en la inten-sidad con que la iglesia la celebra. Cuando una fiesta es grande, la celebramos con una octava: el día festivo y los siete días siguientes; como por ejemplo, la Navidad. La fiesta de la Pas-cua, que recuerda la muerte y resurrección del Señor, es tan grande que la celebramos por siete semanas. La primera lectura de esta fiesta nos da una descripción gráfica de la venida del Espíritu Santo sobre los discípulos con imágenes y pa-labras del Antiguo Testamento. En el antiguo Testamento, el profeta Elías tuvo una gran ex-periencia de Dios en el Monte Sinaí: Dios no estaba ni en el temblor, ni en el viento fuerte, ni en el fuego; estos tres elementos aparecen en la narración de San Lucas para Pentecostés anunciando la presencia de Dios Espíritu San-to. En Pentecostés se da la anti-Babel de los planes de Dios; como en la torra de Babel, gente de todo el mundo se encuentra reunida en la ciudad de Jerusalén; sucede una inter-vención milagrosa de Dios de modo que una sola lengua sea entendida por todos. En tiem-pos modernos se ha tratado de crear una len-gua universal, el Esperanto, olvidándose de que el único Esperanto que puede hablar y unir a toda la humanidad es el lenguaje del amor, que no necesita palabra sino acciones y gestos para ser genuino. La Fiesta de Pentecostés era celebrada por los judíos cincuenta días después de la Pascua; era la fiesta de la Alianza, que recor-daba el don de la Ley en el Sinaí. Los profetas habían anunciado la Nueva Alianza y el nuevo don que Dios iba a dar—un corazón nuevo y el Espíritu de Dios—El día de Pentecostés la igle-sia celebra su nacimiento en la Nueva lianza con la nueva Ley que es el Espíritu de Dios. Es conveniente subrayar que el milagro de Pente-costés fue el don de los “oídos” más que el don

de lenguas. Pedro hablaba una lengua, y cada uno lo oía y entendía en su propia lengua. Hoy tenemos mucha necesidad de un don semejan-te. El evangelio narra la donación del Espí-ritu Santo a los apóstoles el día de Pascua, el llamado “Pentecostés del cenáculo”. El Espíri-tu es el primer don del resucitado. Lo último que Jesús había hecho en su vida había sido incli-nar la cabeza y entregar su Espíritu. Lo prime-ro que hace al resucitar es dar su Espíritu. El don del Espíritu es la primera y primordial ex-periencia de la iglesia. El Espíritu de Dios es el don de la Pas-cua, porque Jesús resucitado y subido al cielo quien nos lo envía. San Juan nos dice que si el Señor no hubiera resucitado, el Espíritu no ha-bría venido. Y entonces como dice San Pablo, aún estaríamos en nuestros pecados. Estaría-mos con en los tiempos antiguos. Moisés subió al Monte Sinaí para recibir de Dios las tablas de la Alianza; y al bajar se las entregó al pue-blo de Dios, como una guía y un camino en la nueva Alianza establecida con El. Jesús el nue-vo Moisés; ha subido no a una montaña, sino a los cielos. Y de allí nos envía como signo de alianza, no unas tablas de piedra, sino su mis-mo Espíritu. Y por medio de este Espíritu, no-sotros realizamos la Nueva Alianza con Dios. Reflexión. Somos el templo del Espíritu de Dios que mora en nosotros. Por eso somos iglesia, por eso somos santos, por eso somos uno. Por la realización del don que tenemos , por la constancia de nuestra vida cristiana, por la prontitud de escuchar al Espíritu de Dios, podemos, en este día de Pentecostés y to-dos los días, confesar que Jesús es el Señor, para alabanza y gloria de nuestro Padre, ahora y por siempre.

Además de nuestra Adoración Nocturna el primer viernes de cada mes, ahora tendremos exposición del Santísimo Sacramento durante el día en la iglesia. Oración por las Vocaciones Sacerdotales

Jesús que sientes compasión al ver la multitud que está como ovejas sin pastor, suscita, en nuestra Iglesia, una nueva primavera de vocaciones. Te pedimos que envíes: Sacerdotes según tu co-razón que nos alimenten con el Pan de Tu Pala-bra y en la mesa de Tu Cuerpo y de Tu Sangre; Consagrados que, por su santidad, sean testigos de Tu Reino; Laicos que, en medio del mundo, den testimonio de ti con su vida y su palabra. Buen Pastor, fortalece a los que elegiste; y ayú-dalos a crecer en el amor y santidad para que respondan plenamente a tu llamada. María, Madre de las vocaciones, ruega por no-sotros. Amén.

Support is needed in many varied ways for all of our programs: catechism with chil-dren ages 6-9 years of age, young teens ages 10-14, youth in high school… in Eng-lish and Spanish language communities. Prayer for Priestly Vocations Good and gracious God, you have called us through our Baptism to discipleship with your Son Jesus Christ, and have sent us to bring the Good News of salvation to all people. We pray for you to grant us more priests, deacons, religious brothers and sisters and lay ministers to build up your Church here within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Inspire young men and women by the example of Saint Junipero Serra to give them-selves totally to the work of Christ and His Church. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen!

PRO-LIFE To some, having a handicapped child seems like a terrible thing. The reality is that it does add work and time, but it normally increases the reward and the joy of par-enting. Let us pray that a handicapped child will never be considered a burden but rather a blessing. SMM Parish prays to end death by human hands: abortion, euthanasia, and capitol punishment.

FAITH FORMATION New registrations on May 1st for the up-coming year of formation. Current fami-lies will be receiving renewal forms that can be dropped off at our office during business hours. For any new family inter-ested in enrolling their child to any of our Faith Formation program, you may in-quire and pick up informational packets as of May 1st.

UN VIAJE DE FE Mi nombre es Abril González y estoy aquí para compartir parte de mi viaje con ustedes. Mi creador, un guardián de la puntuación, y el juez di-vino que me vio caer una y otra vez. Esta era mi defini-ción de quién era Dios en mi vida antes de comenzar el programa RCIA. Mi familia creció en una iglesia Bautista y caí cuando aún era joven. Yo sabía que Jesús murió por mis pecados. Yo también sabía que yo era una pecadora y realmente sabía ¿mi dirección eterna? Me encontré asistiendo a Santa Margarita María por pri-mera vez, como una nueva familia, con un niño pequeño y un marido que había estado en Santa Margarita María pero que no había vuelto a visitar en mucho tiempo. Lle-gué a mi primera misa llevando una enorme armadura de juicio. Creciendo, todo lo que oía sobre la fe católica era negativo y mi cabeza y mi corazón no estaban en gracia. Me senté durante la misa con los ojos bien abiertos y el corazón cerrado. Fue a través del encuentro con el Diácono Rick y Mau-reen, asistiendo a su programa de encuentro de compro-miso, haciéndolo casarse conmigo y Joe, y tener nuestro hijo bautizado que llevó mi corazón a comenzar a ablan-darse hacia la idea de unirse a RCIA. No fue hasta que nació mi segundo hijo, que tuve un verdadero momento de "venir a Jesús" en la parte de atrás de la iglesia mien-tras escuchaba a Joey Albera compartir su testimonio de RCIA el año pasado. Sentí las lágrimas corriendo por mi cara y supe que estaba lista. Al unirme al programa RCIA me abrumaron al principio con la información y la gente que Dios había traído a mi vida. Me dijeron que haría lazos con mis compañeros de clase. Cada semana abrimos el evangelio, escuchábamos y apoyábamos a los demás. El proceso de despido en la mi-sa me dio tiempo para hacer mis preguntas y encontrar la comprensión que necesitaba. Uno de mis mayores puntos de inflexión fue cuando le pregunté, "¿por qué tengo que hacer esto, por qué la iglesia me está probando?" Con una sonrisa, el Diácono Rick contestó: "Abril, la iglesia no te está probando, es tiempo para que usted pruebe la iglesia. "Vine a clase con todos mis juicios más profundos hacia la iglesia y con cada clase de paso dejé sentirme segura, apoyada y amada. El año pasado tiene muchos momentos llenos de lágri-mas de felicidad, lágrimas de tristeza y risas que siempre se celebrarán dentro de mí. Ser capaz de ponerse de pie con mis hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, caminar hacia el Agua Santa, y tener mis pecados lavados es una experien-cia que realmente no se puede poner en palabras. En el pasado no pensé que ser bautizada fuera tan importante, ahora lo veo como un regalo. Mis hermanos y hermanas compañeros si sienten que podrían estar donde yo estaba—-parados y llenos de jui-cio y preocupación, no estoy segura de su dirección eter-na. Usted puede optar por moverse hacia Dios o lejos de Él. Nunca estamos sentados. Nuestra iglesia está aquí... lista y esperando... esperando para abrir sus brazos a us-ted y darle la bienvenida. Les agradezco su amor, sus ora-ciones y apoyo durante mi viaje a través del programa RCIA.

The Thursday morning Bible Study Group, which is led by Fr. John, is continuing its study of St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians. The group meets on Thurs-days from 10:00-11:30 a.m. in the St. Joseph Cen-ter. Our upcoming meetings are as follows: June 1, 15, and 22. Please note that there will be no meet-ing on June 8. June 22 is our last meeting before a summer hiatus, which will continue until mid-September. All are welcome to join, even if you have missed previous meetings or have never studied the Bible before.
