Pastor’S Corner—Father Paul O’Donnell

Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary,

Since being restricted to celebrating the Holy Mass out of doors, I have been forced to re-flect on many things. Here are a few, in no par-ticular order.

My first reaction to the state’s mandate was, “Lord, what are we going to do?” The answer came quickly, easily and almost amazingly fast—presenting itself in the form of the Msgr. Marc Trudeau Courtyard attached to Hegarty Hall. It just so happened that it exactly fits the permitted number of participants and was easily adaptable to our emergency needs. The number of seats, safely spaced, under a nice pergola keeping out the worst of the sun’s harsher rays, combined with our faithful daily breeze keeping even the hotter days fresh and even comfortable—made the whole experience enjoyable, almost like camping when your were a kid! So, my first in-stinct, perhaps yours as well, was indeed to com-plain, but with actual experience, my lamenta-tions turned to praise. Just like the structure of most of the 150 Psalms in the Bible. They always start out griping but end with praising. So, my to my surprise, over these past few months, my general attitude is gratitude, wherein I thank God daily for what He has provided. Also, listen-ing to some local pastors in our last deanery meeting describe their own parishes’ outdoor logistics, I am inclined to be even more thankful. They are either on soggy grass or blazing black-top. Even when raining, a timely blue tarp has shielded us from the worst of the weather. Even this past Sunday when seeming hurricane force winds began to lift the consecrated hosts out of the ciborium while distributing Holy Commun-ion, I was inclined to praise Jesus for allowing us some small participation in His Cross. Moreover, I thank and praise God for His goodness, calling the hearts of so many good parishioners to attend the six Sunday Masses held each weekend (4 Eng-lish and 2 Spanish). I am edified daily by those attending our 8:15am weekday Masses (Monday through Friday). In each Mass I am further re-minded of so many who are not able to attend, and so, I pray for each one individually and for all together, their families and intentions.

Another thing I enjoy very much is having the open backdrop behind our temporary altar

with a beautiful view of St. Margaret Mary’s patio area. The white statue of the holy angel and Our Lady with the grotto of the Sacred Heart as a backdrop is accented by roses and well-kept greenery. Having confessions outside too is a happy experience, that despite mosquitos, sun and wind and lines of penitents— despite every-thing—we here at St. Margaret Mary are still providing the Sacraments, the best we can under very strange and unusual circumstance: the Holy Eucharist, Marriages, Funerals, Baptisms. We may not be allowed to hold parish meetings yet but we are still meeting each other in the Lord through grace.

When all this will end, your guess is as good as mine. But, like you, I long for the day when we can all be together again, worshipping freely, thankful for everything. No one is ever so restricted that they cannot pray. No one is ever so restricted that we cannot appreciate the good things God continues to provide. If the Son of Man makes you free, you are truly free! So let us continue to grow in faith, full of hope, taking advantage of the many opportunities God still offers us daily to be charitable to others. Imagine, if we are still outside at Christmas, our parish family will be offered an extraordinary experi-ence, sharing the Holy Family’s trial of having no room at the inn, the cold hillside stable, and hopefully too, myriad angels glorifying God!

Prayer for the Presenta on of the Blessed Virgin Mary – November 21st

Most gracious Virgin Mary, on this, the feast day of your presenta on in the temple, we honor your parents’ decision to consecrate you to God. Your dedica on to a life spent wholly in His service is an inspira on to us all. You yourself would grow to become a living temple for our Lord. Because of your fiat, now we all can become temples for our Lord as well; first, as the Trinity dwells within us; and secondly, in the Eucharist. Help us to be worthy dwelling places for God by following His will and loving Him with our whole hearts. May we become a living praise of His glory by allowing him to shine forth freely from our being. Blessed Virgin, pray for this favor for us this day. Amen.

Mensaje del Padre Paul O’Donnell Queridos amigos de Santa Margarita María   Desde que se limito a celebrar la Santa Misa al aire libre, me he visto obligado a refle-xionar sobre muchas cosas. A continuación se muestran algunas, sin ningún orden en parti-cular. Mi primera reacción al mandato del estado fue: "Señor, ¿qué vamos a hacer?" La respuesta llegó rápida, fácil y casi asombrosamente rápi-da— presentándose en la forma del Patio Mons. Marc Trudeau adjunto al Hegarty Hall. Dio la casualidad de que se ajusta exactamente al número permitido de participantes y fue fácil-mente adaptable a nuestras necesidades de emergencia. La cantidad de asientos, espacia-dos de manera segura, bajo una bonita pérgola que protege de los peores rayos del sol más duros, combinada con nuestra fiel brisa diaria que mantiene frescos e incluso cómodos inclu-so los días más calurosos—, hizo que toda la experiencia fuera agradable, casi como acampa-ba cuando era ¡un niño! Entonces, mi primer instinto, quizás también el suyo, fue de hecho quejarme, pero con la experiencia real, mis lamentos se convirtieron en elogios. Como la estructura de la mayoría de los 150 salmos de la Biblia. Siempre comienzan quejándose, pero terminan con elogios. Entonces, para mi sorpresa, durante estos pocos meses, mi actitud general es la gratitud, en la que agradezco a Dios diariamente por lo que me ha proporcio-nado. Además, al escuchar a algunos pastores locales en nuestra última reunión del decanato descri-bir la logística al aire libre de sus propias parro-quias, me inclino a estar aún más agradecido. Están sobre hierba empapada o asfalto ardien-te. Incluso cuando llueve, una lona azul oportu-na nos ha protegido de lo peor del tiempo. Incluso el domingo pasado, cuando aparentes vientos con fuerza de huracán comenzaron a levantar las hostias consagradas del copón mientras distribuía la Sagrada Comunión, me incliné a alabar a Jesús por permitirnos una pe-queña participación en Su Cruz. Además, agra-dezco y alabo a Dios por su bondad, llamando los corazones de tantos buenos feligreses a asis-tir a las seis misas dominicales que se llevan a cabo cada fin de semana (4 en inglés y 2 en español). Los que asisten a nuestras misas de

lunes a viernes a las 8:15 am me edifican diaria-mente. En cada misa, recuerdo a muchos que no pueden asistir, por lo que oro por cada uno individualmente y por todos juntos, sus fami-lias e intenciones. Otra cosa que disfruto mucho es tener el telón de fondo abierto detrás de nuestro altar temporal con una hermosa vista del área del patio de St. Margarita María. La estatua blanca del santo ángel y Nuestra Señora en la gruta del Sagrado Corazón como telón de fondo está acentuada por rosas y una cuidada vegetación. Tener confesiones afuera también es una experiencia feliz, que a pesar de los mosquitos, el sol y el viento y las filas de los penitentes— a pesar de todo— aquí en Sta. Margarita María seguimos brindando los sacramentos, lo mejor que podemos en circuns-tancias muy extrañas e inusuales: Primera Comunión, Matrimonios, Funerales, Bautis-mos. Puede que no se nos permita celebrar reuniones parroquiales todavía, pero todavía nos encontramos con el Señor a través de la gracia. Cuando todo esto termine, su conjetura será tan buena como la mía. Pero, como su, anhelo el día en que podamos estar todos juntos de nuevo, adorando libremente, agradecidos por todo. Nadie estará tan restringido que no pueda orar. Nadie estará tan restringido que no pueda apreciar las cosas buenas que Dios sigue proporcionando. Si el Hijo del Hombre lo hace libre, ¡es verdaderamente libre! Así que sigamos creciendo en la fe, llenos de esperanza, aprovechando las muchas oportunidades que Dios todavía nos ofrece a diario para ser carita-tivos con los demás. Imagínese, si todavía esta-mos afuera en Navidad, a nuestra familia parroquial se le ofrecerá una experiencia extra-ordinaria, compartiendo la prueba de la Sagra-da Familia de no tener lugar en la posada, el frío establo de la ladera y, con suerte, ¡miles de ángeles glorificando a Dios!

Ser hijo de Dios es, sin duda, un gran privilegio, pero es, al mismo tiempo, una gran responsabilidad. Fuimos creados y adoptados por Dios como hijos. Para nosotros Dios hizo la tierra, el cielo y todas las cosas. Por nosotros se hizo hombre el Hijo de Dios, Jesucristo, y vino al mundo a librarnos del pecado y de la muerte. Por nosotros creó Dios la gracia y los sacra-mentos. Por nosotros reveló su palabra. Por nosotros también instituyó la iglesia. ¡Es la maravilla de la bon-dad de Dios! Pero ser hijo de Dios es también un compromiso y una responsabilidad que no podemos descargar en otros y decirle: “Cumple tu por mí lo que yo, y sólo yo, debo hacer.

El evangelio, con la parábola de los talentos, recalca la responsabilidad del cristiano. Una persona que hereda miles de dólares se pondrá a calcular en cómo hacerlos producir invirtiéndolos y protegiéndo-los contra la inflación o el robo; para ello tomará medidas concretas. El evangelio nos recuerda que cada uno ha recibido de Dios capacidades y cualidades para trabajar; hay que hacerlas producir los frutos que el Señor desea y espera de nosotros. No hay que tener ociosos los dones que hemos recibido. El tercer siervo de la parábola, insolente y perezoso, se disculpó (como Adán) echándole la culpa a su Señor, defrau-dando las esperanzas que se habían puesto en él. En su plan de amor, Dios repartió sus dones a cada uno; más que fijarse en la cantidad o la calidad de talentos Que uno tiene, lo más importante es descubrirlos y hacerlos fructificar.

Sería de vez en cuando conveniente que los miem-bros de la familia o de un grupo de amigos, se dijeran mutuamente los dones y cualidades que ven en los otros, y como pueden ponerlos en uso para beneficio de todos, especialmente de las personas más necesita-das. Sucede algunas veces que hay personas con talen-tos, las cuales o por vergüenza o porque nadie las invi-

ta, no pasan a la acción. Todos debemos animarnos unos a otros a trabajar para el Señor.

Somos administradores de los dones de Dios. En la parábola, el mismo premio, el gozo de tu Señor, reciben el que recibió tres y el que recibió cinco talen-tos, porque ambos hicieron lo que estaba de su parte. El cristiano no debe ser enterrador de talentos, ni bajo pretexto de humildad ni por miedo o por pereza. Nues-tra sociedad de consumo está llena de cementerios de talentos; en el trabajo, a los empleados se les pide que sigan reglas y obedezcan, pero muy poco se les pide que usen su iniciativa e inteligencia para crear un ambiente de amistad y de ayuda mutua. Nuestra parro-quias y grupos religiosos deberían ser centros de opor-tunidad y desafío para poner los talentos de los fieles s producir a través del servicio generoso a los demás, especialmente a los necesitados.

No todos tenemos la misma inteligencia, capacidad de trabajo, fuerza y resistencia. No todos tenemos la misma salud. No todos alcanzamos igual cantidad de bienes materiales. Todos tenemos la obligación de trabajar con los dones que Dios nos dio. No podemos enterrarlos ni mucho menos acusar a Dios de ser exigente. El trabajo es una ley de la vida. Ley impuesta por el mismo Dios, que dijo a Adán en el paraíso: “Comerás el pan con el sudor de tu frente”. Pero el trabajo no puede ser igual para todos, porque no todos tenemos la misma capaci-dad para trabajar.

Reflexión

Siempre nos ha resultado difícil entender que a quien no tiene le será quitado lo poco que tiene y al que mucho tiene le será dado más. Esto significa, sencilla-mente, que quien trabaja recibe más con el fruto de su labor, mientras que le no trabaja llega a perder hasta lo que poseía al comienzo.
