Last Judgement “And then they will see the ‘the Son of Man coming in the
clouds’ with great power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of
the earth to the end of the sky.” (Mark 13:24-32)

Dear Parishioners,
Perhaps you noticed last Sunday that the church bell is now ringing in sync with the new Mass sched-ule, and maybe you also noticed that it is ringing five minutes before Mass begins. The following re-flection by Dom Virgil Michel, O.S.B., a Benedictine Monk writing in 1939, offers some insight into the ceremony that was likely used, even in 1871, to bless our bell. One way or another, this reflection is well worth keeping in mind each time we hear our bell ring.
A mixture of salt and water is made in the blessing of the church bells, which are washed with it while psalms are chanted. The prayers ask that we may experience an increase of devotion when we hear the bells ringing and that then “the snares of the devil be repelled, hail and tempests be averted.” The bell is anointed with holy oil in the ceremony. The gospel that is read in the ceremony contains the sig-nificant message of Jesus to Martha of Bethany: “Only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part, which shall not be taken from her.” This is the message the church bells constantly ring out even to our modern world of forgotten religion and of forgetful Catholics. In the ringing of the bells the voice of Christ calls to us, and whether we are in a position to answer its summons in person or no, Christ’s message to Martha should come to our minds and thus revive in us the consciousness of the high calling we have as members of Christ.
Even now in 2018, may we respond to this beautiful call of our church bell each time we hear it.
You are in my daily prayers.
May God bless you and keep you in His care, and may the Blessed Mother intercede for you,
Father Cibelli
P.S. Please note that we will have daily Mass at 8:30 am only on both Thursday and Friday on account of Thanksgiving. Please consider starting your Thanksgiving Day with greatest act of thanksgiving that there is, the Eucharist.
Please pray for…

Right to Life: -- There's an abor-tion facility in Hagerstown at 160 W. Washington St, Suite 100, just 3 doors from St. Mary Church, and there's a serious need for adults and children to be there praying for a change of mind of those enter-ing. There's an opportunity for side-walk counseling if you're comforta-ble doing that, but first, prayer at the site is very powerful. Volunteers are needed 2 days each week: every Thursday and every other Tues-day from 9 to 11 AM; every other Saturday from 8 to 11 AM. Open Tuesday, November 20 and De-cember 4; Thursday, November 29 and December 6; and Satur-day, December 1 and December 8. We also need another "shift" to stay until the women come out after the abortion so we can provide some help. Please email Janet Neel [email protected] .

Father,
If I attend Mass daily, receive the Eucharist frequently, pray, and go to Confession
frequently, do I need to ask for or seek indulgences for praying certain prayers or doing
certain practices? Why?
“Each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire,
and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.” (1 Corinthians 3:13) Any soul not totally pure,
cannot enter the presence of Almighty God. Purgatory is the state or condition of the human soul where the
temporal punishment for sins is “purged” or expiated after death; if such consequences have not already been
expiated before death. The eternal consequences for sin, i.e. going to Hell, are erased by Sacramental Absolu-
tion. The temporal consequences for sin must be expiated either in this life or in the next. Temporal conse-
quences are those residual effects that remain after the eternal consequences are erased; for example, a linger-
ing attachment to some venial sin or material thing; situations that were a result of my sin which have been left
unresolved; etc. If one has not rectified these situations prior to death, Purgatory is the place where one is pu-
rified of such attachments and sees the true suffering which their sins have caused. According to The Cate-
chism of the Catholic Church, #1498 “Through indulgences the faithful can obtain the remission of temporal
punishment resulting from sin for themselves and also for the souls in Purgatory.” (“For if he were not expect-
ing that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for
the dead.” 2nd Maccabees 12:44) Indulgences can be either partial or plenary, meaning that they remit
some (partial) or all (plenary) of the temporal consequences due to sin. The general conditions for receiving
an indulgence are: 1.) one must be in a state of grace, subject to the one granting the indulgence, and intend to
acquire the indulgence, 2.) perform the action to which the indulgence is attached, 3.) Sacramental Confession
and Communion within about two weeks before or after the action, 4.) Prayer for the intention of the Holy Fa-
ther, on the day of the action, 5.) be free from all attachment to venial sin. Since the power of the keys
(Matthew 16: 19) were given to Church by Christ, the Church is the one who may grant the indulgence. The
list of the approved indulgences was reissued after the Second Vatican Council. Therefore, old books or pray-
er cards may say “500 days indulgence” but they may no longer be on the Church’s current approved list. To
see the current list of indulgences one must check the Enchiridion of Indulgences, which can be found on the
Internet.
Have a Blessed Thanksgiving

ADVENT SERVICE PROJECT helping children who without our help will
have nothing at all for Christmas
Dear Parishioners, We are announcing plans to adopt the children of
Washington County Head Start and asking for your help.
We appeal for your assistance with our Advent
service project as we have in the past. Your generosity will
enable us to continue our in-gathering of gifts for these
needy little ones. Because of your warm and generous
response in the past we are calling upon you again. You,
the members of the parish, and the children in our Sunday
School of Religion have made it possible to provide both
new toys and new clothing to our adopted boys and girls
of Washington County Head Start. This event has become
a St. Mary’s tradition. We thank all who return each year to
adopt a needy child, and we welcome those of you who
adopt a child for the first time. The children we adopt are
infants through five year olds.
As you can imagine, the needs of this program
continue to grow with each passing year. Without the help
from St. Mary’s parishioners, these little ones will have
nothing at all for Christmas. To those who may not know
about this program, let me explain just what the CCD
School of Religion has been doing for the past 48 years . .
36 of those with your help.
Each child in our Sunday School of Religion, along
with the CCD Executive Board members, teachers, and
classroom aides, brings a gift-wrapped item of new
clothing for his or her adopted friend. While the CCD group
takes care of all the clothing, hopes are that St. Mary’s
parishioners will once more provide the toys. All toys and
clothing are distributed to the children after we deliver them
to Washington County Head Start.
Our “shopping list” this year is as big as ever. With
your help we will be able to provide for all these children
once again.
What we ask of you: On December 1 and 2 Names of the children will be attached to the Advent wreath for you to take. Also, CCD members will be outside the church entrances with the names of the children. You may select a name to purchase toys for that child. If
possible, we estimate the cost to be about $30 or more
per gift. Complete directions will be given to you when you select a name. If you would prefer giving a cash donation, instead of buying a toy, a group of volunteers will do the shopping for you. If you plan to make a donation, please do not select a name of a child. Donations in any amount are most gratefully accepted. Your gift, along with the gifts of clothing that our CCD children, teachers, helpers, and Executive Board members will bring, will be delivered to Washington County Head Start in time for Christmas. The needs of these children are very great; their resources are very limited. We hope to make at least one day very happy for them, with your help.
Please:
Because checking in all the gifts, making sure that each child is taken care of, is time consuming, we ask you
to bring your gift to church on any day and put it around the advent wreath, during the week (8AM -3:30PM) drop it off at the parish office, or bring it to Sunday Mass on the weekends of Dec 8 and 9 and Dec 15 and 16.
To insure each child has his or her gift please be on time with your gift? The gifts will be delivered on December 17. Thank you for your help!!
