St. Mary’s

Hall of faMe

June 5, 2013

The St. Mary’s Hall of fame acknowledges St.

Mary’s alumni and devoted friends who have

exemplified St. Mary’s Pillars for Success:

Catholic, excellence, Integrity and Respect.

Members of the St. Mary’s Hall of fame are

acknowledged and celebrated as testaments

of a St. Mary’s education.

Inductees are chosen for their service to the

St. Mary’s community and their altruistic

generosity toward others.

Their lifetimes are marked by their striving

toward excellence in whichever profession,

vocation, sport, endeavor or other calling to

which he or she answers.

Tonight, we are blessed to remember our

inductees of the past and honor our newest

members of the

a. JaMeS lyNCH ’45We induct A. James Lynch to the St. Mary’s Hall

of Fame posthumously for his life of honor,

achievement and generosity.

After graduating from St. Mary’s, Jim entered the

U.S. Navy. During World War II in 1946 he was

stationed on the new aircraft carrier Philippine

Seas on its Operation High Jump expedition into

the South Pole, led by Admiral Richard Byrd. After serving

his country, Jim moved back to Lynn to dedicate his life to

serving both his community and his family.

Establishing A. James Lynch Real Estate and Insurance in

1955, the firm (currently run by Jim’s daughter, Maura, and

son, Tom) offers insurance of all kinds, including home,

life, automobile and commercial. At the firm’s height, Jim

was the largest Realtor in the area with offices in Lynn and

Peabody.

After Jim retired in 1990, he and his wife, Patricia A.

(Newhall) Lynch, moved to Rockport and were able to spend

many years traveling around the world and welcoming their

many family members into their home further up the North

Shore. Though Jim lived in Rockport for many years, he still

considered himself a true Lynner.

Though Jim will always be remembered for his business

acumen, those who knew him best will perpetuate his legacy

of kindness, fairness and generosity to all. His son, Tom

Lynch, says, “Honesty and integrity is what he was about.

He wouldn’t always tell people what they wanted to hear, he

would always tell them the truth.”

Passing away at the age of 85, Jim left a legacy worth

celebrating and a loving family that we are thankful to

welcome this evening.

JoHN J. SCHICklING ’57We honor John Schickling, former Vice-Chair of

the St. Mary’s Board of Trustees and loyal friend, in

this year’s St. Mary’s Hall of Fame induction class.

John attributes much of his St. Mary’s success

to Sister Mary Honora Callaghan, a Sister of St.

Joseph, who encouraged him to live a life of

virtue and to, above all, go to college. Though

John entered the U.S. Marines right after graduation, he

always remembered the advice from Sister Mary Honora

and received his bachelors degree from Salem State while

working at General Electric. After graduating first in his class,

John was offered a position in GE’s Financial Management

Program and spent a total of fourteen years with GE. With

that experience as his springboard, John has pursued

the life of a businessman, receiving his MBA from Babson

College and serving as a longtime faculty member at the

Northeastern University Graduate School of Business.

Most recently, John has held the position Executive Vice

President for KaZaK Composites, Inc., a Mass. engineering

research firm that he sold to an international firm in 2011.

Previously, he was Chief Financial Officer for Phase Forward,

where he led the IPO in 2004. In the past, he has provided

business leadership at companies such as Mobile Systems

International (London), where he had extensive experience

in merger and acquisition activity as well as international

operations; PRI Automation, where he managed a successful

IPO as the company grew from $7.5MM in revenues to an

annual run rate of $170MM; and Telesis Systems, a successful

CAE/CAD company he helped to found in the early 1980s.

John has served on the Boards of several public companies

over his business career.

John and his wife, Janet, established the Schickling Family

Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2007 to help students in need

receive the St. Mary’s education that has affected John

so much throughout his life. John resides in Boxford and

enjoys time with his five kids and four grandchildren. We are

honored to recognize John’s commitment to St. Mary’s as

we induct him into our Hall of Fame.

alBeRT V. DiVIRGIlIo ’59Al DiVirgilio, a man who has worn many hats of

prestige and entrepreneurship throughout his

life, is deeply-seated in St. Mary’s history and

continues to dedicate an extraordinary amount

of time and effort to the school’s vision.

After graduating from St. Mary’s High School in

1959, Al continued on to Salem State University

for his bachelor of science and masters of education degrees,

and then to Suffolk Law School. He also served in the United

Stated Marine Corps as a 2nd Engineer Lance Corporal.

Al put his teaching degree to work at Cobbet Junior High,

Lynn Classical High School and Swampscott High School,

teaching biology, chemistry, physics and math. Later in his

career he taught at Salem State University.

In the arena of public service, Al served two terms on the

Lynn School Committee, four as City Councillor and three

as mayor of Lynn; the first St. Mary’s graduate elected to the

office. During his tenure, Al served as President of the Mass.

Mayor Association, Vice President of the Mass. Municipal

Association, Director of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and

member of both the North Shore and Lynn Chambers of

Commerce. He assisted in the formation of the Lynn Business

Partnership and the Lynn Adopt-a-School program.

As an entrepreneur, Al founded Mr. D School of Driving,

Robin Hood Travel Agency, Robin Hood School of Travel,

DiVirgilio Insurance, DiVirgilio Financial Group, Wyoma

Dairy Twirl, and TQM Consulting.

Now retired, Al spends much time with his wife of 45 years,

Virginia, his five children and his ten grandchildren, two of

whom are current St. Mary’s students. He also dedicates

time to many local nonprofit organizations, including Franco

Amvets, Hibernians, Salem State University Foundation

Board, Lynn Historical Society, Knights of Columbus, the

Lynn Council on Aging and his alma mater, St. Mary’s.

Al has never forgotten the individuals and institutions that

have propelled him to where he is now. We are grateful that

he and his family are with us tonight.

DR. CHeRyl l. MeNINNo ’74 ed.D.We honor our dear friend Cheryl Meninno, a

champion of Special Education and a loyal friend

of St. Mary’s students and many other causes, in

this year’s Hall of Fame induction class.

Cheryl grew up in Saugus and Lynn and was the

oldest of six children to parents Nick and Peggy

Meninno. At St. Mary’s, Cheryl excelled on the

basketball court and on the softball field, deeming her time

in high school, “the greatest four years of [her] life.”

Cheryl went on to receive her bachelor of science degree

at Fitchburg State, her masters in special education from

the University of Southern Florida, and her doctorate in

educational leadership at the University of Massachusetts,

Lowell.

Cheryl’s life both inside and outside of the classroom has

been dedicated to ensuring quality education for students

with special needs. She worked at the Cardinal Cushing

Center in Hanover, Mass., from 1978–93 as a teacher, case

worker, Vice Principal and Director of Student Services. From

1993–2001, she worked at Saugus High School as a Teacher/

Evaluation Team Leader and Out of District Chairperson.

From 2001–04, she joined the Essex Agricultural and

Technical Institute as Director of Student Services before

assuming her current role as Director of Special Education

in the Lynn Public Schools.

Cheryl has continued to give back to her alma mater as the

St. Mary’s Golf Open Co-Chair over the past several years,

working to raise, on average, $75,000 per year to support

student scholarships and programming. In her spare time,

she enjoys golfing, gardening, boating and sunshine.

Extremely loyal to her family, friends and faith, we are so

blessed to have Cheryl as a part of the St. Mary’s family. With

pride, we induct her into the St. Mary’s Hall of Fame.

MaRk M. McGuIRe ’75We are thrilled to welcome Mark McGuire ’75 all

the way from Cleveland to join us as one of this

year’s St. Mary’s Hall of Fame inductees.

After his time at St. Mary’s, Mark earned a

bachelors degree in psychology, with distinction,

from George Washington University, where he

was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Following his

undergraduate education, he graduated from the University

of Virginia School of Law, where he was a J. Hardy Dillard

Fellow.

Mark was a partner with Powell, Goldstein LLP, a law firm

with offices in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., for several

years before joining International Paper Company, where

he held positions of increasing responsibility beginning in

1992. Prior to becoming Vice President and Deputy General

Counsel in 2003, he served as Associate General Counsel,

General Counsel—Europe and Senior Legal Counsel to the

corporate development function.

Mark currently serves as Executive Vice President and

General Counsel at Eaton Corporation, a global leader

in diversified power management. Since joining Eaton in

2005 he has been responsible for all general legal matters

involving the company, its product groups and related

trade regulation, and intellectual property issues. Mark

also supervises Eaton’s Global Communications and Public

and Community Affairs departments, serves as counsel to

the Board of Directors, and advises the Board on legal and

governance matters.

Mark is a member of the Board and past Chair of the

Governance Committee of the Cleveland Play House

and past president of the Ohio Chapter of the Society of

Corporate Secretaries and Governance Professionals, Inc.

Mark has been a tremendous supporter of the St. Mary’s

mission and values for several years and we are so pleased

to have him here this evening.

lISa J. NeRICH ’83We welcome Lisa Nerich, long time City of Lynn

employee and dedicated volunteer, as one of

this year’s Hall of Fame inductees.

After graduating from Regis College in Weston,

Mass., Lisa returned to Lynn in 1987 to work for

the City and has been serving the community in

various roles ever since.

Lisa joined the City of Lynn as Director of the Lynn Parks and

Recreation’s Lynn Special Needs Camp. In 2008, Lisa moved

into the position of Assistant Superintendent of Parks and

Playgrounds, where she is responsible for both the direction

and scope of recreational events for the parks and playground

as well as year-round administration of a comprehensive

recreational program for special needs children. With this

position, Lisa has gained the support and friendship of many

Lynn citizens and families. In April 2013, Lisa was named

Acting Associate Commissioner for the Lynn Department

of Public Works, responsible for the daily management and

supervision of personnel and operations in the following

areas: Administrative, Cemetery, Engineering, Equipment

Maintenance, Parks, Operations, Street and Sanitation.

An avid volunteer, Lisa has held lead roles in fundraisers and

programming at St. Mary’s, Sacred Heart, the Lynn YMCA,

the Lynn Special Games, the Salvation Army, St. Vincent de

Paul Society, Variety Children’s Charity of New England, Div.

13 Kiwanis Club, Lynn Youth Week, Challenger Little League

and the Women’s Auxiliary Hibernian Hall. Lisa has won many

awards for her service including the Lynn Heritage Park and

the The Daily Item of Lynn’s “Laudable Lynners” honor.

Lisa is the daughter of the late John Nerich, St. Mary’s Hall

of Fame inductee and Class of 1956, and Virginia “Jean”

Nerich. Lisa is one of six children and is the proud aunt to,

“eight beautiful nieces and three handsome nephews.” She

loves to golf, travel, attend Red Sox games, sail and spend

time with her family. We welcome her friends and family this

evening as we celebrate her achievements.
