A Word from Fr. Drummond * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Every time we make the Sign of the Cross whether or not we use the words “In the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” we invoke the Trinity. Those of us who have grown up in

the Faith often fail to realize just how revolutionary the concept of the Trinity —One God in Three Persons— is. There is no other monotheistic faith system that has anything like the Trinity, and many non-Christians think that we believe in multiple “Gods.” (And adding to their confusion is our veneration of Mary as the Theotokos, the Mother of God). But we who have grown up with this idea of “three in One” simply accept that there is a single God in Three Persons. The fact of the matter is that the idea of the Trinity is a revealed Truth which we could never have come to on our own, through our own thought processes and observation of the world around us. There are hints of God as Trinity in the Old Testament, most notably Genesis 18 which opens, “The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre…” Then describes three visitors who together are addressed in the singular by Abraham as “Adonai” a Hebrew word used in relation to God and generally translated as “Lord.” Adonai, however is not the word for Lord used at the beginning of the passage which in fact YHWH, the Name by which God identifies Himself to Moses in the Burning Bush. With hindsight we can read this passage and recognize in it a Theophany of the Trinity. The revelation of the Trinity is given to us by Jesus Christ Himself who time and time again both calls God His Father and even identifies Himself with the aforementioned Name of God which in English means “I am” (eg. John 18: 5-8). Jesus also speaks of sending the “Paraclete,” sometimes rendered “Advocate” in John 14: 15-27. And Jesus’ final command to the Disciples before ascending to Heaven is for them to go out to all nations and baptize “In the Name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28: 15). Many of the Church’s greatest theologians have written extensively on the Trinity including St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. These speculations are only possible because the Trinity was first revealed to them and even in light of everything written about the Trinity, this Dogma is ultimately a mystery. There is a delightful story about St. Augustine, that one day walking along the seashore he comes across a little boy using a sea shell to carry water from the ocean and pour it into a small hole in the sand. The Saint asks the boy what he is doing and he replies that he is trying to bring the entire ocean to pour down the hole. St. Augustine tells him that it is impossible to do so, to which the boy responds, “No more impossible than you understanding the Mystery of the Trinity with your limited intelligence.” The boy then vanishes from sight and St. Augustine realizes that God Himself has reproved him for his pride in thinking he could understand the greatest mystery of all.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Religious Education/CCD

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * High School Students: The Young Disciples (YD) of St. Mi-chael’s meet on Sunday nights from 7:30 to 9:00 PM in the Young Disciples’ Room (part of the All-Purpose Room). The YD is not a typical youth ministry; it is an "open time" for growing in one's per-sonal relationship with Jesus of Nazareth - in a way that calls us all to mature into authentic disciples. A typical night is 7:30-8:10 - basketball, recreation, and conversation; 8:10-8:45 - "The Learning" part. We can't love Christ if we don't know him / topics of faith in current events (usually suggested by the youth); and 8:50-9:00 - si-lent prayer in the Church. For more information, please contact Adina Ordonez ([email protected]). We are looking for Catechists and aides to help with the CCD/Religious Education Program. There are several openings in the ele-mentary grades. We are also looking for catechists interested in helping with our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program. CCD REGISTRATION for the 2019/2020 school year has be-gun. If you are new to the parish or to our religious education pro-gram, please contact Adina Ordonez at [email protected] to set up an appointment to register your child(ren).
