Everyday Stewardship

My wife is a big Dave Ramsey fan. She loves when he tells people that in order to pay down their debt they need to sell so many of their possessions that the kids think that even they can be sold for the right price. He definitely sees earthly possessions as sim-ply tools to be used and not "possessed." This is a tough, countercultural message for sure in the eyes of the average American. Too often, our self-worth is derived from our wealth and the items we own. The size of our house, the brand of our car, and the quan-tity of our belongings are all gauges of success in our world. For Ramsey, not only can you not truly own anything if you owe money to others, it belongs to God anyway and is only given to us as stewards. Could you sell all you have right now? Could you walk away from all that you have amassed and be truly free? When Jesus speaks of the merchant who sells all he has to obtain a pearl of great price, he calls us to see the pearl as the kingdom of heaven. Nothing on earth can rival the value of the kingdom. If that is true, why is it so hard to surrender everything to God to obtain it? It can be fear that keeps us from stepping out in faith. It can be selfishness that prevents us from letting go. Whatever it is, we must face the fact that we are "possessed" by it. The good news is that God does not expect us to conquer this obstacle on our own. But with God, all things are possible. O ur weekly Bible Study is reading and dis-cussing Paul’s letter to the Romans. We meet on Tuesday evenings from 7:30-

8:30pm downstairs in the Stephens Room. Please join us! You are most welcome.

A Note From Coffee & Donuts Hi Friends!

Greetings from India! Do you know that we actually found a DUNKIN’ DONUTS store here? Yes, they do seem to be everywhere! Different flavors are very popular here—like donuts filled with Saffron cream and pistachios! Tasty! The traditional Indian donut is “Balushahi.” It looks a lot like a glazed donut in America because it’s flaky, puffy, and round, but it’s soaked in syrup to give it a moist, sugary center. DELICIOUS! Tea is more popular in India than cof-fee, and a sweet, spicy Chai Tea sure goes nicely with Balashahi!

Did you know: India is the world’s largest democ-racy, with 1.2 BILLION people! 100 MILLION people come to India’s Kumbh Mela Festival, the world’s largest gathering of humans. India is the world’s second-largest English speaking country (second only to the USA!) India’s Hindu Calendar has 6 sea-sons: spring, summer, monsoon, autumn, winter and prevernal! Next stop: Kazakhstan!!

See you on September 10!

Women’s Bible Study Ladies of the parish are invited to attend our weekly Women’s Bible Study. We meet every Thursday downstairs in the North Meeting Room from 9:30am to Noon. Discussion, prayer, and, of course, Bible Study!

Thanks from Glenmary!

Fr. Bruce Brylinski and Lalo Mercado of the Glenmary Home Missions wish to extend their tanks to the par-ish family of St. Paul who generously contributed to the home missions. They assure us of their prayers and request that we pray for Glenmary, all those served by Glenmary in the home missions, and for an increase in vocations to missionary priesthood and brotherhood.
