A Note From Fr. Patrick The Catholic Both/And

Recently, I have had a number of conversations with parishioners, students and residents, about the challenges and the difficulties we all face, individually and societally, in confronting the injustices and dangers which surround us and working to create a better, more just, more peaceful world.

People are anxious, concerned, confused—you name the emotion, people are experiencing it right now. As a result, we see the fight/flight principle in full effect. Some people are diving into every issue; others are completely frozen. Many are somewhere in between. As a parish community, as men and women of faith, we are called, perhaps now more than ever, into the challenging breach of the both/and of Catholicism.

At his Mass of Installation as archbishop, Archbishop Thompson had this to say about the Catholic Both/And. “Far too often, we are being confronted with an ‘either/or’ mentality. We must dare to coun-ter the growing polarization, division and radical individualism that breed fear, distrust, hatred, indiffer-ence, prejudice, selfishness, despair, violence and radical ideology. Our role as people of faith—I es-pecially hold myself accountable as bishop—is to be willing to stand in the breach of the divide, draw-ing people back from the ledges of extremism in self-indulgence and self-righteousness by serving as bridges of unity, ambassadors of hope, instruments of peace. To do so, we must allow the seed, as the Gospel reminds us, the word of everlasting life, Jesus himself, to take root in the very rich soil of our very souls, of our being.”

In our daily lives, in our relationships, in our work, in our advocacy, in our prayer, can you say you are striving to be (and are) a bridge of unity, an ambassador of hope, an instrument of peace?

One of the great challenges of the Catholic both/and is how we hold together and of equal value seemingly opposing forces. We recognize the importance of both faith and reason, rights and responsi-bilities, prayer and action. As a result of reflecting upon this, we are able to understand and see more clearly how beautiful life is in its simplicity and complexity.

A seminary professor of mine once told me the Catholic both/and is like breathing. We can breathe with one lung—just like we can get by with faith and little reason, or vice versa—but we are made for and flourish when both are working to their fullest capacity and complimenting the other.

As each of us and each our families works to respond to the coronavirus, address systemic racism, advocate for the rights of immigrants, evangelizes, engages in any of the important and necessary work of discipleship, the best way to do it is with our lungs at full capacity, filled with the Holy Spirit. Pray for peace and work for justice. Evangelize and accompany. Believe in the Lord and search for the Truth. Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Patrick

Sloane Monroe Sheridan

Welcome, Sloane, and God bless your family!

During a time of prayer on Sunday or while viewing the Mass on TV or online, the faithful

are encouraged to make an act of Spiritual Com-munion. This beautiful devotional practice in the Church is a real source of grace in Com-

munion with our Lord. Below is an example of a prayer for Spiritual Communion.

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things, and I desire to re-ceive you into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacra-mentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and

unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen.

Parish/Community News Annual Missionary Appeal Every summer we welcome a group of religious mis-sionaries, and a group of priest missionaries to St. Paul’s. These missionaries, which are thoroughly vet-ted by the Archdiocese, rely on the generosity of the parishes they visit to support their vital work in the missions. In fact, when this year’s missionary called me, she informed me that almost all of their religious community’s financial support comes from these mis-sion appeals in parishes. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the missionaries are not able to do in-person appeals this summer. In our effort to support this community, I will run their appeal message in the bulletin for the month of July. Here is the information Sr. Pedro Opara, this year's missionary representative, provided me on her com-munity: “The New Evangelization Sisters of Mother of Per-petual Help, Nigeria The New Evangelization Sisters (NES) of Mother of Perpetual Help is an indigenous Religious Congrega-tion founded on the 1st of July 1993 in response to the incessant call of the St. John Paul II to a new Era of Evangelization. The New Evangelization Sisters are called to holiness of life to union with Christ in an interpersonal relation-ship. The NES live out this call, in particular, through the following practices:

• A daily hour of Eucharistic Adoration

• A daily hour of Bible Study, reflection and sharing

• Special Devotion to the Holy Spirit, the Principal agent of Evangelization, and to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Star of Evangelization

Mission / works Our mission works include: Primary Evangelization, Catechesis, Spiritual Anima-tion, Clinical Services, Teaching, Outreaches to Schools, Homes, Prisons, Churches, Hospitals, Car-ing for the elderly, the Motherless, widows and the needy in our society. Our Needs include:

• Assist the needy, the widows, and Motherless ba-bies in Nigeria.

• Feeding the sisters in formation in Nigeria.

• Helping pay sisters tuition in College in Nigeria.

• Financing the works of Evangelization in Nigeria We work here in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, New York, South Africa, Rome, Austria, Tanzania, Burkina Faso and many dioceses in Nigeria. Please I ask for your financial assistance in any way you can, nothing is so small. We appreciate your help especially to us in Africa. May the good Lord reward you abundantly for supporting the needy in Africa and especially in Nigeria. I regret that I cannot be in your parish in person to share our mission and works with you because of COVID 19. May the Lord protect you, bless you and your Families, Amen. Sr. Pedro Opara (Mission Representative)” To support the New Evangelization Sisters, please send any financial gifts to St. Paul and mark the gift, “Missionary Sisters.” We will be sure to send them all of the money we raise.
