THE EPISTLE St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Kennewick, WA

Vicar’s Message Paul uses the Biblical phrase “A Still More Excellent Way” to introduce his hymn praising agape love,

found in 1 Corinthians 13. Because this phrase expresses our life in Christ at St. Paul’s, we are using it

for this year’s pledge appeal.

Jesus’ Way of love weaves together our congregation. Those of you who heard Max Cervantes and

Beatrice Elizai talk about their pilgrimage to Ireland experienced their more excellent way. You heard

the same agape experience when Kimberly Elliott preach about Inviting, Welcoming, and Connecting

newcomers. Our Sunday School and the coalition work for racial equity and social justice also follow

Jesus’ path to seek God’s

excellence.

Our newest “still more

excellent way” involves

visiting sick members and

those who are homebound.

After a strenuous and yet

profound summer of clinical

pastoral education, Kathy

DeMers is beginning a visiting

ministry. She welcomes you to

join her, and assures you of

her support.

Keep the eyes of your heart

open to seeing yet other more

excellent ways.

In Christ’s Love, Rick+

Vision for Becoming Beloved Grant

October 27 Conversation

on Becoming Beloved

Community Grant

The Bishop’s Committee

is seeking a $10,000

Episcopal Church grant

for racial equity work.

The purpose of the Seed

Grant is to further

empower St. Paul’s to

serve as a catalyst and

resource for mobilizing

citizens in the greater Tri-

Cities area to establish

greater and greater racial

equity and social justice.

.

Below are ways such a grant would further bring our vision into

action. We would like to hear from you about this possibility at

coffee hour on Sunday, October 27. A more complete description of

our grant proposal is found on the narthex table and on our

webpage.

To further St. Paul's mission by turning our vision into action

Re-image the Gospel and Re-invigorate the Church

Make St. Paul’s more porous to neighbors and the Tri-Cities,

transforming self and neighbors Through Jesus’ Way of Agape

Love

Build lasting relationships within coalition and beyond

Increase racial equity in St. Paul’s and the Tri-Cities

Awaken more white people to their privilege

Inspire and train more allies working for liberation

Embody a lifestyle that coincides with our baptismal covenant

Participate in the suffering of the oppressed in solidarity with

them

Extend Jesus’s Beloved Community through ecumenical worship

Tell and listen to our stories of “otherizing” and of being

“otherized”

Increase reconciliation by acknowledging systemic racism

“Our newest “still more excellent way” involves Kathy DeMers visiting and organizing volunteers to visit sick members and those who are homebound.”

Father Rick

A Still More Excellent Way

Goals for Becoming a Beloved Community

This fall we will enjoy the beauty and study

the mandate of Paul’s homage to God’s

agape love. You will hear a series of

sermons on 1st Corinthians 13. Two hymns

will accent our liturgies with Jesus’ Way of

Excellence over these weeks. They are

“Come down, O Love divine” and “Come,

thou fount of every blessing.” Finally, you

will be asked to estimate your giving for the

coming year in the form of a 2020 pledge.

Please begin praying about the excellence of

your giving to God’s work in and through St.

Paul’s.

Pastoral Care, My Journey by Kathy DeMers

As many of you may know, I spent the summer completing

a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) unit at Legacy Memori-

al/Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon. The

hospital supports the greater Portland area as one of two

Level I trauma centers. Also a part of the complex is the Or-

egon Burn Center, which is the only burn center in the state

of Oregon. CPE involves both education training and clini-

cal experience in pastoral care. As a Chaplain Intern, I had

the opportunity to provide emotional and spiritual support

to patients and their families. For me, the experience drew

me closer to God and helped me realize those religious val-

ues that are integrated into my very identity. As I reflect on

the summer, I recognize in myself a more relational person

who has the potential to share herself with others in new

genuine ways. I am a more integrated person drawing up-

on my head/heart/gut, which is messy but more hu-

man. The future is still unfolding, but it looks very different

from what it was when I began the CPE journey.

As a part of my service to the parish, I feel compelled to en-

ter into a pastoral care ministry that will support congre-

gants in their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual

healing. For me, this ministry includes visits to the home-

bound, hospitalized, or a person and/or families in general

need. If you find yourself in such a need, please contact the

church and let them know.

Outreach

Once again Saint Paul’s

Outreach would like to

offer our assistance to

students at Park Middle

School by collecting

donations to help keep

them warm throughout

the winter months.

The big red bin is out and

ready for collection in the

church. Drop your

mittens, scarves, extra

jackets, blankets or

hats: whatever you

believe will help keep

these young people

warm and comfortable.

We’ve also been

informed that students

need personal hygiene

items such as shampoo,

conditioner, deodorant,

toothpaste, tooth

brushes, etc. If you have

any extra items or are

able to make an extra

trip to help these kids

out, they are ever so

grateful.

We’ll continue collecting

throughout the winter

months as long as people

are leaving items to be

distributed.

The Old Farmers Almanac

is calling for a record

snowfall again this year.

Brrrrr!

Penny by Penny….

Room for the "Miles of Pennies Fund" del Church Periodical Club (CPC) parece

Me

Deacon Lynn

Has the collection canister in the Fireside Room for the “Miles of Pennies Fund” of the Church Periodical Club (CPC) seemed a bit low on pennies lately? There's a very good reason for that. All the coins were changed into a check, and sent to the Diocesan CPC Chairman. (Sending the actual pennies was not the way to go!) Our contribution joined contributions from other churches to the fund. A “Thank-you” note from the CPC Chairman is posted on the bulletin board in the Fireside Room hallway. The Miles of Pennies Fund was established in 1988 on the 100th anniversary of the Church Periodical Club. The Miles of Pennies Fund Committee awarded its first grants in 1991. The maximum grant given by Miles of Pennies is $844.80 which represents one mile of pennies. The grants serve the needs of children from kindergarten through high school wherever there is a need. I was surprised to learn that it's been over 30 years since the Miles of Pennies Fund was established. Think of all the children and youth who have benefited from it. Thank You! Deacon Lynn

Come and join the fun with some really important people, The Altar Guild! They are the folks that keep our sanctuary beautiful. Altar Guild is looking for volunteers on Saturday, October 12 at 9:30 am to help with cleaning and polishing.

The figures for September were posted in the Bulletin and in the August Epistle.

We have been doing quite well with our predictions for 2019 income and expenses. That said, this Fall we will put together a Budget for 2020 and launching our Stewardship Campaign.

Please be sure to check out the information as it is produced and ask questions as we move through the process. Thank you to everyone for your support. Susan Moore, Interim Treasurer

¡Brrrrr!
