Pastor’s Corner / Rincón del Pastor Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Perhaps we are still eating left over food from our celebration of Thanksgiving; but nonetheless from the perspective of our civil American culture, Christmas is here! From now until Christmas Day, we will be bombarded with advertisements of gift giving, party celebrations and discounts suggesting that we “need” to buy this item or to attend this celebration. And so our culture continues… However, it is not Christ-mas yet – it’s not even Advent! Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. This celebration commemorates the last Sunday of our Liturgical Year, thus Christ the King is the pinnacle celebration of the mercy and judgment of God. In other words we celebrate that Jesus Christ is the “Alpha and Omega” – the beginning and the end of life, that all times and seasons obey Him. From the example of Jesus Christ, we learn too that the Kingdom of God is a servant kingdom, whereby Christ “came to serve and not be served.” In a like manner, the Church is called to be a “servant Church” – whereby we imitate the Lord in ministry; for as He washed his disciples’ feet (John 13), so too we are called to do the same.

In his encyclical “The Joy of the Gospel,” Pope Francis reminds pastors of souls that they must “Smell like their sheep.” Pastors ought to guide the flock in the midst of them, not only ahead of them – and even sometimes from behind, thus reconciling and assisting all people to follow Christ our Good Shepherd. Pastors should be close or accessible to their sheep, not distant. I pray that as your pastor, we can be guided by Jesus the Gentle and Good Shepherd (Psalm 23). I am indeed thankful for all of you who serve wonderfully in your respective ministries. Next weekend marks the new liturgical year with the first Sunday of Advent, whereby we celebrate with joyful expectation of the coming of Jesus Christ. Remember that it is not yet Christmas. May we pause today to give God thanks for our ministries and to those persons who give selflessly to others in ministry. They are wonderful examples of servant leadership. Queridas Hermanas y Hermanos,

Peace and Blessings / Paz y bendiciones, Fr. Tim / Padre Tim
