GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE
DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE
22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Can you imagine if Jesus threw a party? From the
wedding feast at Cana, we know he wouldn't let the wine
run out. From this Sunday's Gospel, we know there would
be quite a lively array of guests! We also knew who the
most important people would be - everyone. Jesus advises
throwing a party that turns everything upside down.
Everyone should assume they're the least important
attendee, and the guest list shouldn't include the neighbor-
hood "who's who." Rather, we should go looking for
"the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind" and hope they
RSVP. Jesus describes a particular posture towards our
own hospitality.
Parties are about the other people. "Do not recline at
table in the place of honor." How often can small talk
become a one-upmanship of job promotions, home
renovations, and our children's achievements? We've all
been to parties where being the most interesting guest is
the highest achievement. Yet so often, we know the best
party guests are the ones who listen well to our stories.
Whether we are guests or hosts, we have the opportunity
to look on others with humility and awe.
Parties are opportunities to serve. Jesus advises us to be
careful who we invite "in case they might invite you back
and you have repayment." Does Jesus literally mean we
shouldn't invite our friends over? Of course not! But he
does invite us to special consideration when we offer
hospitality. When we invite people over to our home,
what motivates us? Who we want to spend time with?
Who we'd like to impress? These ultimately have only
ourselves in mind. How about asking: Who could use
some extra care right now? Who could benefit from a
fun evening out? In other words, who can I serve?
Please remember in your prayers John Accettola, Josh B., Pam Balow, Mike Bartow, Matt Bauman, Dennis Buckholtz, Terry Cavicchio, Mary

BIBLE In order to better understand the Bible we should have
some knowledge about the author of a particular book and
about the events that were taking place at that time.
Jeremiah, for example, was a reluctant prophet who was
persecuted for advocating peaceful negotiations with in-
vading armies instead of rallying the citizens to take up
arms and engage in battle, whereas the Wisdom Books
were written as advice for daily living in times of relative
peace. Before the resurrection of Jesus most people
denied or were skeptical about a life after death. “Eat,
drink and be merry for tomorrow we die” was the preva-
lent attitude. Much spiritual benefit can be gained from
simply reading biblical passages, but deeper insight
can be gained if one also examines biblical notes and
commentaries related to a particular text.
NEW EVANGELIZATION
Evangelization is the process of announcing the Good
News of salvation to others. It is improper if not sinful
to approach this task with an air of superiority or self-
righteousness. All recent popes instruct us to evangelize
with an attitude of service with the intention of sharing
our gift of Faith. Our approach must be one of dialogue
and an invitation to others to take up a lifestyle that guar-
antees rewards of a spiritual union with an all-powerful
loving God, an emotional peace of mind, and a bodily
resurrection to the eternal life of heaven. Our motivation
to evangelize must not be to prove ourselves right and
others wrong or to proclaim an ultimatum that they
must accept baptism and become Catholic or face eternal
damnation, but rather our intention must be to share the
joy and privilege of our unique intimacy with the Son of
God.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Baptism initiates an individual into the Catholic
Church. But this is only the beginning: a true believer
will then live the Faith with prayer, regularly attending
church services, receiving the sacraments, reading and
meditating on the Bible, recognizing and serving the
needs of others. The most important and indeed the
central act of a Catholic is to attend Mass and participate
in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. At Mass the
Church recreates the Last Supper by bringing followers of
Jesus together and recalling through readings and prayers
what God has done for his people. Acting through and
with the priest, Jesus becomes present in the bread and
wine, and enables us to join with him in sacrificially of-
fering ourselves by committing to put to death our bodily
desires and rise to a new way of living in the Holy Spirit.
We Need You! Have you thought about becoming more active
in our parish?
We need help with ministers for Mass.
Altar Servers, if you have received First Eucharist
you have met the minimum requirement. We will have a
training session in September. Server guides are on the
back table of the church to review.
Readers, help others receive Gods Word by reading the
first and second reading and leading the Prayers of the
Faithful.
Eucharistic Ministers, help with the distribution of
communion at mass, you must be 18 and have received
Confirmation.
Cantors or Choir Members, to help lead the
congregation in song. We know you can sing and will
help you!
We try to meet your requests for preferred mass times
but some flexibility is needed to fill the schedule.
Current clearances are required for anyone over 18
and we will help you with obtaining what is needed.
If you have served in the past in any of these positions or
are interested in starting please call or e-mail the Parish
Office (724) 593-7479 and we will get you started!
or complete the form below and return either in the
collection basket or mail it to the Parish Office.
Fr. Teo went to our parishioners' house to Bless the family and their home along with many St. Raymond parishioners
who enjoy special celebrations with one another as well as breakfast after daily Holy Mass, calling themselves the
"breakfast club." Thank you Fr. Teo for blessing us all.

Season of Creation The Season of Creation is September 1 (the World Day
of Prayer for Creation) through October 4 (the Feast of
Saint Francis). To celebrate this Season of Creation the
Creation Care Team invites you appreciate creation,
which is a central expression of God’s love. The Team
highlights this month-long celebration of all creation
with a program title “Biodiversity and Why It Matters.”
Biodiversity matters to our food production, water, clean
air, the control of climate and disease, and to our spiritual
wellbeing. We live in a time of rapid species loss. Come
and learn about this loss and what people who care are
doing about it. What is the quality of life we are leaving
to our children and our children’s children? Do we hear
God’s observation at the time of initial creation, “and
God saw that it was good.” To learn more, visit the
Catholic Climate Covenant website at
https://www.catholicclimatecovenant.org or
www.globalcatholicclimatemovement.org
Lord, help us to maintain a reverent attitude towards
nature, threatened from all sides today,
in such a way that we may restore it completely
to the condition of brother/sister
and to its role of usefulness to all humankind
for the glory of God the Creator.
