Staff Development Unit:

“Web 2.0 Tools and You”

Arlene H. Dawson and Juanita Douglas

Participant Information:

This staff development lesson is designed to share with teachers a variety of Web 2.0 tools that

they can use in their classrooms to enhance instruction and learning. We chose Web 2.0 tools

that are easily accessible and economical. We identified these Web 2.0 tools because they are

accessible through the Dekalb County School’s network. Since we recognized that to adequately

prepare students for twentieth first century learning, we must expose students and teachers to

technology on a daily basis. We selected the following tools: Voki, Wordle, and Voice Thread.

4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility

Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital

culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:

a.

advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and

technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate

documentation of sources.

b. address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing

equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.

c. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use

of technology and information.

d.

develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with

colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and

collaboration tools.

5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership

Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit

leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the

effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers:

a. participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of

technology to improve student learning.

b.

exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in

shared decision making and community building, and developing the leadership and

technology skills of others.

c.

evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to

make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of

student learning.

d. contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and

of their school and community.

Participants:

All 7th grade teachers will participate in this lesson.

STAGE 1: DESIRED RESULTS

Teachers as students will be able:

Create products for their classrooms and students using Web 2.0 tools.

Create, edit, and share creative presentations through Web 2.0 tools.

Collaborate with teaching peers, students and other learning community members using

Web 2.0 tools.

Use video, presentation, and communication tools to support learning.

UNDERSTANDINGS:

Teachers as students will understand that:

Technology can be easily incorporated into the classroom

Many of the Web 2.0 tools are easily adapted for instruction

How to make a Wordle for vocabulary, an avatar to introduce the lesson, use

VoiceThread to enhance their lessons.

Related Misconceptions:

New technology is complicated.

Making and uploading a screencast is difficult

There is not enough time to develop technology and enhance lessons.

Web 2.0 tools cannot be used at school.

Stage 2: ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE

Performance Tasks:

Grasp: You will use various Web 2.0 tools to create vocabulary lists, introduce standards, and to

deliver a mini lesson.

Role: Teacher using technology to enhance your daily lessons.

Audience: Seventh grade teachers.

Situation: Your goal will be to develop lesson enhancements for various disciplines using

technology.

Product, Performance, and Purpose: Your products will be added to your list of favorite

websites, teacher web pages and saved to student work stations for easy access and re-teaching.

Standards for success: Successful creation of various products using Web 2.0 tools.

Stage 3: Learning Plan

Where is this unit going?

1. The librarians will each introduce the unit by explaining that there are many Web 2.0

tools out there that seem difficult, but are in fact easy once you delve in and get use to

using them.

2. The teacher-librarians will provide a list of various Web 2.0 tools for teachers to use in

their classrooms.

3. The teachers - librarians will introduce at least four Web 2.0 tools (Voki, Wordle, Jing

and Voice thread) and show samples of each.

4. Teachers will choose at least two of the Web 2.0 tools and create a product that they can

use in their classroom.

The Hook-

Teacher-librarian will show a Voki as an introduction to the staff development.

What experiences will the teachers have at this staff development?

1. The teacher-librarians will introduce a discussion on Web. 2.0 tools? What are they? How

are they accessed? How much do they cost? Are they difficult to use? How can they

improve student learning? How can they be used in the classroom?

2. The teacher-librarians will present a PowerPoint briefly introducing each of the above Web

2.0 tools and giving step by step instructions for producing each.

3. Teachers will use computers in the media center to access Voki, Wordle, and VoiceThread.

4. The teachers will practice at least two of the above Web 2.0 tools to create sample products

for use in their classroom.

5. The teacher-librarians will close using the 3-2-1strategy. (3 things you learned, 2 remaining

questions, and one-life-long lesson).

6. Teachers will complete an evaluation of the staff development presentation.

Rethink/Reflect:

Teachers will be asked how they feel they can use Web 2.0 tools in their classrooms.

Can they think of other ways to use the Web 2.0 tools introduce in the lesson?

Revise:

Teachers will revise their thoughts on how they can use technology in their classroom to

enhance instruction.

Teachers will also engage in group discussions about ways to implement into the

classroom and share those ideas.

Exhibit:

Teachers will share their products by e-mailing them to other members of the group for

comments.

Evaluate:

Teachers will complete an evaluation on the staff development presentation.

Sequence of Activities, Tasks, and Reflections

This lesson will last 45 minutes.

First 5 minutes:

Introduction:

Teacher - Librarian will introduce Web 2.0 tools and briefly discuss I their uses.

Next 15 minutes:

Lesson:

Teacher-librarians will introduce three Web 2.0 tools.

In addition, they will show one example of each Web 2.0 tool.

Teacher librarians will then demonstrate how to sign on and use these tools in their

classrooms.

Next 15 minutes:

Guided Practice:

Teachers create accounts for the various Web 2.0 tools.

Teachers will create products and save for future use with students.

Teacher-librarian will assist teachers and will answer any questions that arise.

Last 10 minutes:

Practice, Sharing, and Evaluation:

Teachers will share three things they learned.

Teachers will ask two remaining questions they may have.

One life-long lesson about Web 2.0 tools.

Follow-up plan:

Teacher librarians will continue to offer support to teachers using these Web 2.0 tools.

Teacher librarians will upload lesson to SMS library website.

Teacher librarians will entertain questions and offer support on or using Web 2.0 in the

classroom at our blog site.
