XVIII SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear brothers and sisters, “So, he began to calculate” is what we read in this Sunday’s Gospel, in the midst of Jesus describing a man who wasted much time on earth planning how he can get richer only to die the next day. Folks, we do NOT want to waste the time that God has given us on this earth. Unfortunately, so many people do just that. This, in part, is because we get anxious when we are faced with problems and we tend to try and (“calculate”) figure them out on our own. Just the other day a man approached me and said “Fr., I don’t like priests giving out homework.” This was a light-hearted reference to my challenge over the last 2 weeks to give God five minutes of your time. He told me how he has been struggling with it and, often, his mind begins to wonder with his plans for the day and other distractions. Ladies and gentlemen, this is VERY common. The devil does not want us to stop and reflect and be silent with God for even 5 minutes and ESPECIALLY every day. It is so important for us to ask Mary, all the saints and angels and God, Him Self, for help with staying focused and to persevere in prayer. If you can persevere every day in the 5 minutes of silence and stillness with God, I guarantee that there will come a day when some huge issue will become clear and be resolved. It is not because of your calculations, but, rather, God Who has revealed something. 5 minutes of stillness with God can seem like a waste of time, but, whenever we waste time with Jesus, it is a great preparation for the next life, and we will see the result great peace and joy. So, let the only thing that you calculate for tomorrow be when and where you will be for your 5 minutes wasted with Jesus.

Thank you and God bless you.

Fr. Shaun Foggo
