Psalm for the Day: Psalm 84 on page 96

First Reading: Jeremiah 23:9-22 & 30-32Jeremiah describes falseprophets who preached lies to Godspeople. A good pastoror prophet teaches the truth of God notthe lies of man. Is this same sin going on in the world today? If so, how?

Second Reading: Matthew 23:13-15,25-28Here we see the Lion of Judah in all his fury. Jesus condemnsthe Pharisees for their hypocrisy. Outwardly they appeared to beholy and righteous, but inwardly their hearts were not right withGod. They rejected Jesus as the Messiah, relied on their own

righteousness instead of Gods grace in Christ, and served Godnot in humble gratitude but in worldly pride.

Jeremiah 23:9-22 & 30-329 Concerning the prophets:My heart is broken within me;all my bones tremble.

I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome by wine, because of the LORD and his holy words.10 The land is full of adulterers; because of the curse the land lies parched

and the pastures in the desert are withered. The prophetsfollow an evil course and use their power unjustly.11 "Both prophet and priest are godless;even in my temple I find their wickedness," declares the LORD.

12 "Therefore their path will become slippery;they will be banished to darkness and there they will fall.I will bring disaster on them in the year they are punished,"

declares the LORD.13 "Among the prophets of Samaria I saw this repulsive thing:

They prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray.14 And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible:They commit adultery and live a lie.

They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from hiswickedness.

They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah."

15 Therefore, this is what the LORD Almighty says concerning the prophets:"I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned water,

because from the prophets of Jerusalemungodliness has spread throughout the land."

    16 This is what the LORD Almighty says:"Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you;

they fill you with false hopes.

They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.17 They keep saying to those who despise me,`The LORD says: You will have peace.'And to all who follow the stubbornness of their heartsthey say, `No harm will come to you.'

18 But which of them has stood in the council of the LORDto see or to hear his word? Who has listened and heard his word?

19 See, the storm of the LORD will burst out in wrath,a whirlwind swirling down on the heads of the wicked.

20 The anger of the LORD will not turn back until he fully accomplishes

the purposes of his heart. In days to come you will understand it clearly.21 I did not send these prophets, yet they have run with their message;I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied.22 But if they had stood in my council, they would have proclaimed my words to my people

and would have turned them from their evil ways and from their evil deeds.

30 "Therefore," declares the LORD, "I am against the prophets who steal from oneanother words supposedly from me. 31 Yes," declares the LORD, "I am against theprophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, `The LORD declares.'32 Indeed, I am against those who prophesy false dreams," declares the LORD."They tell them and lead my people astray with their reckless lies, yet I did not sendor appoint them. They do not benefit these people in the least," declares the LORD.

Matthew 23:13-15,25-2813 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut thekingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let

those enter who are trying to. 1415 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel overland and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make himtwice as much a son of hell as you are.25 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean theoutside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside alsowill be clean.27 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are likewhitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full ofdead men's bones and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside youappear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wicked-

    ness.

1 Timothy 4:1616 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you

will save both yourself and your hearers.

1 T imothy Pauls first letter to the young pastor, Timothy

    What are the Pastoral Epistles?

1 Timothy is the first of the three pastoral epistles letters written to pastors (two toTimothy, one to Titus), rather than to churches. While the letters are written to pas-tors, they have great meaning for churches today.

Theme of 1 TimothyHow people ought to conduct themselves in Gods household (1 Timothy 3:15).

    Purpose of 1 Timothy

according to Merrill Ungerin Ungers Bible Dictionary

Paul had four main goals in penning this letter to Timothy.

    1) To encourage Timothy to oppose false teaching (1:3-7, 18-20; 6:3-5, 20, 21)

    2) To have Timothy appoint teachers in the church who will watch their life anddoctrine closely (3:1-13 & 4:16). They need not be brilliant men, butthey must be good men.

    3) To instruct him in the management of church affairs (3:14,15)

    4) To exhort him to diligence in the performance of his pastoral duties (4:6-6:2)

    Who was Timothy?

Paul came into contact with Timothy probably during his first missionary journey(sometime around 48 A.D.). Timothy lived in the town of Lystra in central Asia Minor present-day Turkey. Pauls first experience in Lystra was anything but positive (readabout this amazing experience in Acts 14:8-20).

In this unlikely place Timothy was raised in a godly home. Though his father wasa Greek (a gentile), his mother, Eunice, and his grandmother, Lois, were devoutChristian Jews. These two women instructed Timothy in the Old Testament Scrip-tures from his earliest childhood (2 Timothy 1:5 & 3:14-16).

When Paul visited Lystra on his second missionary journey (Acts 16:1-3) threeyears after his first visit Timothy was a disciple so highly spoken of that Paul tookhim along as his companion in ministry. When trouble arose in churches and Paulwas prevented from visiting them personally he often sent Timothy in his place. This happened in Thessalonica (1 Thessalonians 3:1,2) and Corinth (1 Corinthians 4:17 &16:10).

T imothy (Please note - This is the second page of information on 1 Timothy)

When Paul sent Timothy to Philippi, he commended Timothy to them with thehighest praise that any minister of Christ can hope to receive. Paul says of Timothy:I have no one else like him, who takes a genuine interest in your welfare. Foreveryone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But you knowthat Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he has servedwith me in the work of the gospel (Philippians 2:20-22).

Commentator Martin Franzmann in The Word of the Lord Grows adds, IfPaul was a fond father to Timothy, he was not a blind one. He knew his beloved childs

weaknesses: Timothy was still young and apparently conscious of it as a handicap (1 Timothy4:12). He was inclined to be timid (1 Cor. 16:10,11 & 2 Timothy 1:7).Besides his health was not the best; his stomach troubled him, an ailment not un common

among sensitive and conscientious young men of God (1 Timothy 5:23).

    Timetable for the Pastoral Epistles

as constructed by Martin Franzmannn The Word of the Lord Grows

The following is a probable timeline.1) That Paul was released at the end of the two years imprisonment recorded inActs 28:30 (61 A.D.) seems certain. Whether Paul ever carried out hisintention of going to Spain (Romans 15:28) remains uncertain.

    2) Paul revisited his former mission fields in Asia (present-day Turkey) andMacedonia (northern Greece). Paul returned to the East by way of theisland of Crete where he left Titus with the task of putting Gods house in or-

der (Titus 1:5). Paul left Timothy in charge at Ephesus (1 Timothy 1:3).Paul proceeded from Ephesus to Macedonia and from there he wrote his first let-

ter to Timothy (1 Timothy 1:3)

    3) Paul wrote the letter to Titus, either from Macedonia just before his departure forNicopolis or during the journey to Nicopolis where he hoped to spend the winter.

Paul then visited Troas, Corinth and Miletus (2 Timothy 4:13,20).

    4) Paul was again arrested and imprisoned at Rome. This time his imprisonmentwas much more severe than 59-61 A.D. and he saw no hope for acquittal. In his

second letter to Timothy he summons his beloved child to him once more beforethe end.

    5) This second imprisonment in Rome ended in the martyrdom of Paul. It took placeunder Nero sometime between 63-67 A.D..

JESUS CARES MINISTRY START-UPJesus Cares Ministries (JCM)

is a unique outreach ministry whosemission is to assist congregations inthe WELS/ELS in meeting theirresponsibility to share the Gospel with people who have an intellectual and develop-

mental disability, their families and communities. We assist congregations by train-ing volunteers, encouraging congregations to use our simplified Bible history curricu-lum, conducting our simplified worship service, helping plan fellowship events, andhelping you locate and conduct outreach to people with special needs in your area. When possible it is important to include people with disabilities in a regular Bibleclass or worship opportunity that the church provides. However, sometimes it isbeneficial to have programs that are specifically designed for persons with specialneeds that will allow them to know Jesus as their Savior and for them to have an ac-tive worship and prayer life.We have an opportunity in Jefferson to share the Gospel to a large number ofadults with special needs. Many of them gather on a daily basis at the St. Colettacampus in Jefferson. They want to hear more about their Savior. If you are inter-

ested in hearing and discussing more about this possible outreach program pleasejoin us for a meeting. We hope to see you there.
