2 Chronicles 32:6-8,10, 16-226 He appointed military officers over the people and assembled them before him inthe square at the city gate and encouraged them with these words: 7 "Be strong andcourageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and thevast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him.8 With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and

to fight our battles." And the people gained confidence from what Hezekiah the kingof Judah said. 10 "This is what Sennacherib king of Assyria says: On what are youbasing your confidence, that you remain in Jerusalem under siege?16 Sennacherib's officers spoke further against the LORD God and against his ser-vant Hezekiah. 17 The king also wrote letters insulting the LORD, the God of Israel, and saying this against him: "Just as the gods of the peoples of the other lands didnot rescue their people from my hand, so the god of Hezekiah will not rescue hispeople from my hand." 18 Then they called out in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalemwho were on the wall, to terrify them and make them afraid in order to capture thecity. 19 They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of theother peoples of the world -- the work of men's hands.20 King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz cried out in prayer to heaven

about this. 21 And the LORD sent an angel, who annihilated all the fighting men andthe leaders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king. So he withdrew to his ownland in disgrace. And when he went into the temple of his god, some of his sons cuthim down with the sword.22 So the LORD saved Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem from the hand of Sen-nacherib king of Assyria and from the hand of all others. He took care of them onevery side.

Luke 22:39-4639 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and hisdisciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he saidto them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." 41 He

withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt downand prayed,42 "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yetnot my will, but yours be done." 43 An angel from heavenappeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being inanguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat waslike drops of blood falling to the ground.45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disci-ples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up andpray so that you will not fall into temptation."

Titus 3:3-83 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds ofpassions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating oneanother. 4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared,5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of hismercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eter-nal life. 8 This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so thatthose who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what isgood. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

T i tusPut Gods House in Order

The 3rd of the Pastoral Epistles

After Paul was released from his first imprisonment in Rome in 63 A.D., he left Titus on theisland of Crete to put Gods house in order [literally to straighten out what was left unfin-ished (1:5)]. Pauls letter to Titus stresses the importance of Christians living upright andmoral lives. The motivation is not the law, but the gospel what God has done for us inChrist. The residents of Crete had a bad reputation for unruliness, as Paul explains, Evenone of their own prophets has said, Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons (1:12).In the Greek language, to cretinize (to behave like a resident on the island of Crete) meantto be deceitful and dishonest. In the opening words of his letter to Titus, Paul speaks ofthe knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness (1:1). The gospel is not just head knowl-edge. It is soul-saving and life-transforming truth! Right teaching leads to right living.

    Put Gods House in Order

    1) By teaching the truth that leads to godliness (1:1ff)

    2) By training godly men to transmit the truth (1:5-9)

    3) By teaching people to live godly lives (2:2-8)[ older men (2:2); older women (2:3); younger women (2:4,5); and young men (2:6-8)].

Note the Emphasis in Tituson Sanctified Living

Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith (1:13).

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say,

No to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly livesin this present age. . . so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Saviorattractive (Titus 2:11,12).

Jesus Christ . . . gave himself . . . to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himselfa people that are his very own, eager to do what is good(2:14).

Remind the people . . . to do whatever is good (3:1).

Those who have trusted in God (are) . . . to devote themselves to doing what is good (3:8)

Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that theymay . . . not live unproductive lives (3:14).

T i tusNote: beautiful descriptions o f the Gospel in Titus

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men (2:11).

    Jesus Christ . . . gave himself . . . to redeem us from all wickedness (2:14).

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because ofrighteous things we had done, but because of his mercy (3:4,5)

He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he pouredout on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that having been justified by hisgrace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trust worthy say-ing (3:8).

    Food for Thought

How relevant is the message of Titus to the 21st century church in America today? Are many Christians giving themselves over to drunkenness, immorality, materialism anddishonesty just as the Cretans were doing in Pauls day? Does the church today need arenewed emphasis on the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness(1:1) ?

    Who was Titus?

Titus was a trusted companion of the Apostle Paul, a man whom he could rely on to getthe job done and to do it right. How valuable is a friend and coworker like Titus? Paulused him not just a few times to help churches out, but again and again. God made Titusan instrument of blessing to Paul and to the people of God. The Zondervan Pictorial Ency-clopedia has this to say about Titus: In many respects Titus appears in the NT as an idealpastor. Paul reflects very favorably upon Titus genuine devotion and pastoral concern(2 Cor 8:16,17). . . These scattered allusions (8 times in 2 Corinthians; twice in Galatians,

once in 2 Timothy and once in Titus) indicate . . . his stellar qualifications as a pastor.

As you read in last Sundays worship folder, Pastor & Kathryn Scharrer at-tended their son, Alans Installation Service atGarden Homes Lutheran Church inMilwaukee last Sunday. There were allkinds of connections with our congregationand with our area at Garden Homes. In fact,

seated right behind the Scharrers in churchwas a sister in Christ who shared that shehad attended our school about 30 years ago.She rode a bus to our school from ruralWhitewater. On the faculty at GardenHomes is Micah Walz, son of the former Lake-side Basketball Coach, Dale Walz. Twobrothers are on the faculty. They are sons of James Bauer who teaches Math atLakeside. Perhaps you had a similar heart-warming experience when visiting sisterchurches in our Wisconsin Synod while on vacation or out of town.

THANK YOU FOR CABLE TV SERVICE !Your pastor visited Lucas Hartwig last week. Lucas is the son of Robert and

Leanne Hartwig and grandson of Katherine Kutz. Due to special needs, he lives inhis own apartment and receives 24/7 care. Even though he is unable to talk, can heever communicate! He had such a warm reaction when his pastor visited with him.His caretaker shared that Lucas pays attention. He really listens to our Cable TVService. Again, as his caretaker is talking, Lucas had such a warm and exciting re-action. Your pastors heart was touched. He said, Lucas, Im going to put yourname in the bulletin and share with our congregation that you say, Thank you forthe Cable TV Service. Once again, Lucas had such a warm, friendly, and excitingreaction. Its difficult to convey in words the joy and excitement Lucas had for theopportunity to hear Gods Word from his church on Cable TV. But, heres his thankyou to you. The service means a lot to him!
