Joshua 24:1,2,14-16,28-301Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned theelders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves beforeGod. 2Joshua said to all the people . . . 14Now fear the LORD and serve him with allfaithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River andin Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you,

then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods yourforefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose you areliving. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD. 16Then the peo-ple answered, Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods!28Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance. 29After these

things, Joshua, son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundredand ten. And they buried him in the land of his inheritance. . . . 31Israel served theLORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and whohad experienced everything the LORD had done for Israel.

Matthew 14:1-131 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, 2 and he said to his

attendants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why mi-raculous powers are at work in him."3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because ofHerodias, his brother Philip's wife, 4 for John had been saying to him: "It is not lawfulfor you to have her." 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, be-cause they considered him a prophet.6 On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herodso much 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Promptedby her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." 9The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he orderedthat her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 His head wasbrought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John's

disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus. 13When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitaryplace.

    2 Timothy 1:2,8,13 & 2:3,15 & 4:2,3,5-9, 21,13, 22To Timothy, my dear son . . . Join with me in suffering for the gospel . . . What you

heard from me keep as the pattern of sound teaching. . . Endure hardship with uslike a good soldier of Christ Jesus . . . Do your best to present yourself to God asone approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctlyhandles the word of truth. . . . I give you this charge: Preach the word; be preparedin season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage with great patience

and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sounddoctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a greatnumber of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. . . . But you, keepyour head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, dischargeall the duties of your ministry. . . For I am already being poured out like a drink offer-ing and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have fin-

ished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of right-eousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day andnot only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing . . . Do your best tocome to me quickly . . . Do your best to get here before winter. . . When you comebring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas . . . The Lord be with your spirit.Grace be with you.

2 T imothy The Historical Setting

As described by Martin Franzmannin The Word of the Lord Grows

Paul writes from prison in Rome. He has been a prisoner for some time: Onesiphorous,a Christian of Ephesus, has already sought him out and visited him in Rome (2 Timothy1:16,17). There has already been one hearing, at which Paul was deserted by all men andyet, with the Lords help, so successfully defended himself that he was rescued from thelions mouth (2 Timothy 4:16,17).

But Paul has no hope of ultimate acquittal; he is at the end of his course. And he is vir-tually alone; only Luke is with him. He longs to see his beloved child Timothy once moreand bids him to come to Rome before the winter makes travel by sea impossible (2 Timothy1:4: 4:9,21).

But he must reckon with the possibility that Timothy may not reach Rome in time; and sohe must put in writing all that he hopes to tell Timothy in person if and when he arrives. Theletter is thus, as Bengel has put it, Pauls last will and testament in which he bids Timothyto:

    1) Preserve the Gospel pure and unchanged;2) Guard it against the increasingly vicious attacks of false teachers;3) Train men to transmit it faithfully; and4) Be ready to take his own share of suffering in the proclamation and defense of it.

The most personal of the Pastoral Letters is therefore in a sense official too; for Paulcannot separate his person from his office. The man who has been set apart for the Gospelof God (Romans 1:1) remains one with that Gospel in life and in death.

Date of Writing: 65-67 A.D.Pauls first imprisonment was from 61-63 A.D.. When he was released from his first impris-

onment in Rome, he may have fulfilled his desire to go to Spain. He then went to the islandof Crete where he left Titus to put Gods house in order. He then traveled to Ephesus onthe western coast of Asia minor (present-day Turkey) where he left Timothy to pastor thechurch of God in that place. Paul then traveled to Macedonia (northern Greece) and Achaia(southern Greece) where he no doubt visited many of the churches he founded on hissecond missionary journey Philippi, Thessalonica and Corinth. Then he was arrested a second time.

The conditions of his second imprisonment were much worse than the first. Paul writeshis second and last letter to Timothy from prison in Rome sometime between 65 and 67 A.D.
