    ST. PAULS EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

    5th Sunday after Pentecost July 2nd & 5tth, 2009

    Theme of the Day

Today we celebrateGods power and grace in changing the lives of sinful human beings

    - especially as we see it in the life of the Apostle John

    Hymns: 517 467 379 & 507 & 304 619

Order of Service: The Common Service (p 15-25)

First Reading: Jonah 4:1-11John the Apostle was named after Jonah in the Old Testament. Jonah was

a fine name for a man who made his living fishing. Just as Gods grace

changed Jonah from an angry, self-centered man into a fisher of men, soGods grace transformed John in the same way.

Second Reading: 1 John 4:7-12God changed John from an angry man ready to call down fire from heaven

(see Luke 9:51-55) into a man who is well-known for hisencouragement to love one another. Some have called Johns words in 1

John 4 the greatest ever written on the subject of love.

    Sermon Text: Mark 1:14-20

    Sermon Theme:John

    The Youngest & Oldest Disciple

How Jesus Changed the Life of One Young Man

    1) He called him to believe in someone greater than himself2) He called him to a purpose higher than his own3) He called him to become a new man

Jonah 4:1-111 But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. 2 He prayed to the LORD, "OLORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick toflee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to an-ger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3 Now, OLORD, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live."4 But the LORD replied, "Have you any right to be angry?"5 Jonah went out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself ashelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6 Then theLORD God provided a vine and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for hishead to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the vine. 7 But atdawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the vine so that it withered.8 When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jo-nah's head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, "It would be better forme to die than to live."9 But God said to Jonah, "Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?""I do," he said. "I am angry enough to die."10 But the LORD said, "You have been concerned about this vine, though you did

not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11 ButNineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell theirright hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned aboutthat great city?"

1 John 4:7-127 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone wholoves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does notknow God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: Hesent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This islove: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoningsacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love

one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives inus and his love is made complete in us.

Mark 1:14-2014 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good newsof God. 15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent andbelieve the good news!"16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrewcasting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 "Come, follow me,"Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." 18 At once they left their nets and

followed him.19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brotherJohn in a boat, preparing their nets. 20Without delay he called them, and they lefttheir father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

    SUMMER SERMON SERIES

John MacArthur wrote a book on the twelve disciples whose title we will be using asthe theme for our summer sermon series. The words below are from the book whichbears this title.

TWELVE ORDINARY MENHow the Master shaped his disciples for service in Gods kingdom

and what he wants to do with you.

Who were these men? They werent saints. They werent scholars.

They werent even religious sages. What is most amazing about the disciples

is that Jesus ever selected them at all.Among them, a handful of common fishermen,

a hated tax collector, and an impulsive political zealot.

HOW DO I PREPARE MY HEART FOR COMMUNION?

A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of thecup (1 Corinthians 11:28). As you come to communion, ask yourself these ques-tions:

    1) Am I truly sorry for my sins?2) Do I trust in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of my sins?3) Do I believe that I receive the true body and blood of Christ in and with the

bread and wine?4) Do I intend with the help of the Holy Spirit to amend my sinful life?
