    ST. PAULS EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

    10th Sunday after Pentecost August 6th & 9th, 2009

    Theme of the Day

From the little-known Disciples, James and Jude, we learn to

    Serve the Lord in Humility

    Hymns: 251 463 770 (see bulletin) 260

    Order of Service:Thursday: Order of Evening Prayer (p. 52-61)Sunday @ 8 a.m. Service of the Word (p. 38-44)Sunday @ 10 a.m. Contemporary Service (see insert)

First Reading: Genesis 24:1-4, 10-20We do not know the name of the servant of Abraham whom God used tofind a wife for Isaac, but we know that he was a man offaith - as evidenced by his prayer. The names of Jesus disciplestoday are little known to the world, but their work is of great value in the

    eyes of the Lord.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5Pauls goal was not to gain fame and attention for himself. When hecame to the city of Corinth, he said, I resolved to know nothing while I was

with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. His mission was not to

point people to himself but to the Savior.

    Sermon Text: Matthew 10:1-4

Sermon Theme: James & JudeThe Unknown Disciples

    1) Jesus must increase, but I must decrease2) Your labor in the Lord is never in vain

Genesis 24:1-4, 10-2081 Abraham was now old and well advanced in years, and theLORD had blessed him in every way. 2 He said tothe chief servant in his household, the one in charge of allthat he had, "Put your hand under my thigh. 3 I want you toswear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of

earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from thedaughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living,4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a

wife for my son Isaac."10 Then the servant took ten of his master's camelsand left, taking with him all kinds of good things from hismaster. He set out for Aram Naharaim and made his way to the town of Nahor.11 He had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was towardevening, the time the women go out to draw water.12 Then he prayed, "O LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14 May it be that

when I say to a girl, `Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,' and she says,`Drink, and I'll water your camels too' -- let her be the one you have chosen for yourservant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master."15 Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder.

She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham'sbrother Nahor. 16 The girl was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever lain with her.She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.17 The servant hurried to meet her and said, "Please give me a little water from your

jar." 18 "Drink, my lord," she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gavehim a drink. 19 After she had given him a drink, she said, "I'll draw water for yourcamels too, until they have finished drinking." 20 So she quickly emptied her jar intothe trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his

    camels.

1 Corinthians 2:1-51 When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdomas I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For I resolved to know nothingwhile I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weak-ness and fear, and with much trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were notwith wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, 5 sothat your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power.

bled. You must go down before you can go up. Joseph finds his path to the Egyp-tian court through the pit into which his brothers threw him. Paul rose to the apostle-ship only by falling flat on his face on the road to Damascus.
