    ST. PAULS EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

    3 rd Sunday after Pentecost June 18 th & 21st , 2009

    Theme of the Day

    COME AND LEARNGO AND SHARE!

    Hymns: 177 (v1-3) (v4-6) (see Insert) & Psalm 73 (p.94) & Psalm 78 (p.95) 331

Order of Service: Service of the Word & Sacrament (p. 26-37)

First Reading: Ephesians 6:5-9 These words addressed to slaves apply to us as workers. We do ourwork to the best of our ability, not to be men-pleasers but to serveour Lord wholeheartedly. We serve quietly not to make a name forourselves, but to honor our Savior, Jesus. The Apostle Andrew servedfaithfully, quietly, behind the scenes to his Saviors glory.

Second Reading: Mark 1:14-20 Andrew was one of the top four of the 12 disciples, but the leastknown of the four. Jesus called him along with Peter, James and Johnto leave behind their nets and be fishers of men. Are you bold likePeter? Are you shy like Andrew? Jesus wants to use you, as you are,to lead others out of darkness into the wonderful light of knowing Je-sus as the way to heaven.

    Sermon Text: John 1:35-42a

    Sermon Theme: BE AN ANDREW!

    1) Quietly follow

    2) Quietly lead

Ephesians 6:5-95 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of

heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor whentheir eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, 8 because you knowthat the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave orfree.9 And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you

know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favorit-ism with him.

Mark 1:14-2014 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, pro-

claiming the good news of God. 15 "The time has come," hesaid. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe thegood news!"16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon

and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for theywere fishermen. 17 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I willmake you fishers of men." 18 At once they left their nets and fol-lowed him.19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Ze-

bedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebe-dee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

John 1:35-4235 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.

36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around,

Jesus saw them following and asked, "What do you want?"They said, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"39 "Come," he replied, "and you will see."So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was

about the tenth hour.40 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said

and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brotherSimon and tell him, "We have found the Messiah" (that is, the Christ). 42 And hebrought him to Jesus.

SUMMER SERMON SERIESJohn MacArthur wrote a book on the twelve disciples whose title we will be using as

the theme for our summer sermon series. The words below are from the book whichbears this title.

TWELVE ORDINARY MENHow the Master shaped his disciples for service in Gods kingdom

and what he wants to do with you.

Who were these men? They werent saints. They werent scholars.

They werent even religious sages. What is most amazing about the disciples

is that Jesus ever selected them at all.Among them, a handful of common fishermen,

a hated tax collector, and an impulsive political zealot.

Sunday, June 14th Peter The Disciple with the Foot-Shaped MouthToday Andrew A Brother in the Background

HOW DO I PREPARE MY HEART FOR COMMUNION?As you come to communion, ask yourself these questions?

    1) Am I truly sorry for my sins?2) Do I trust in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of my sins?3) Do I believe that I receive the true body and blood of Christ in and with the

bread and wine?4) Do I intend with the help of the Holy Spirit to amend my sinful life?

A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup (1Corinthians 11:28).

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMMUNIONFor the 10:00 a.m. service - the ushers will speak to the people who are sitting in

the side pews at the front of church BEFORE THE SERVICE and ask them to walkto the back of church and down the center aisle for communion DURING the singingof O Christ, Lamb of God. This custom is done at other churches in the WELS andwas suggested to us to still be meaningful, and at the same time, we hope that thewalking during the singing of this part of the communion liturgy will eliminate somedelay time for our communicants. The people in the side pews will continue to com-mune first.
