EngineThe 3406E engine, when matched with the torque divider and field proven powershifttransmission, will provide years of dependable service.

3406E EUI Engine. The 3406E enginemeets worldwide emissions regulationsfor the Environmental ProtectionAgency (EPA), the European Union(EU) and the Japan Ministry ofConstruction (JMOC).

Turbocharged and Aftercooled. Providehigh horsepower while keeping rpm andexhaust temperatures low. The 3406Eelectronically controlled unit injectionfuel system helps it meet currentemission standards.

Reduced Exhaust Smoke. Exhaustsmoke is significantly reduced throughprecise, electronic control of fuelmetering and injection timing.

Engine Capabilities. The largedisplacement and high torque rise of the3406E EUI engine allows the D8R II todoze through tough material andprovides good lugging capability tomove heavy loads efficiently.

High Tensile-Strength Iron Block.The Caterpillar foundry casts the 3406EEUI block from high tensile-strengthgray iron. The one-piece casting isstabilized to maintain internaldimensions under all operatingconditions. A steel spacer placedbetween the head and block eliminatesthe need for block counterbores.

Cooling. An internal top-deck coolingshelf increases coolant flow to the topof the cylinders for long cylinder linerand piston life. The deep-skirted lowerstructure and heavy internal ribbing addstrength and rigidity to the block.

Carbon Steel Forged Crankshaft. The crankshaft is a carbon steel forging,fully heat-treated, super-finished anddynamically balanced.

Steel Spacer. A steel spacer betweenthe block and head eliminates the needfor block counterbores, extending blocklife.

Torque DividerThe D8R II torque divider provides efficiency benefits of a direct-drive power train whilemaintaining the capabilities of a converter drive.

Torque Divider Performance. Animproved single-stage torque convertersends 70% of engine torque through aconverter and 30% through a directdrive shaft for greater drivelineefficiency and higher torquemultiplication. The new torqueconverter provides improved efficiencyand broader range of performance insecond gear dozing and scraperpushloading.

Caterpillar Monitoring System. Providesthe operator instant feedback on thecondition of operating systems andrecords such performance data ashigh/low gauge readings to helpdiagnose problems and manageundercarriage. Caterpillar MonitoringSystem provides gauges that monitorthe temperature of the engine coolant,hydraulic oil and power train oil, plusthe fuel level.

Alert Indicators. The CaterpillarMonitoring System provides alertindicators that monitor engine oilpressure, inlet manifold temperature,coolant flow, electrical system,transmission oil filter, air filter serviceindicator, engine fault warning light and hydraulic filter. It also has an easyto read digital tachometer.

Comfortable Operation. An isolation-mounted cab reduces noise andvibration. The cab is pre-wired for a 12- volt radio mount recessed in the headliner.

Cat Comfort Series Seat. The new CatComfort Series seat is fully adjustableand designed for comfort and support.The seat and back cushions are thickerand designed to reduce pressure on thelower back and thighs while allowingunrestricted arm and leg movement.

Single Twist Tiller With Push-ButtonSpeed Control. New on the D8R II is asingle twist tiller with push-buttonspeed controls allowing one-handcontrol of the direction and degree ofturns, forward-reverse shifting, and gearselection.

Hydraulic Control Lockout Valve. Whenengaged, the lockout valve preventsinadvertent operation of the hydraulicwork tool attachments.

Throttle Control. A rocker switchcontrol sets the high or low idle with atouch of the finger. A decelerator pedalgives the operator full control of enginespeed when the rocker switch is in thehigh idle position.

Clear Full-Circle View. Tapered hoodand "notched" fuel tank give theoperator a clear line of sight to the frontand rear work areas. The low rearwindow lets the operator see the rippertip. The large, single-pane windows inthe doors allow the operator to see bothends of the blade.

Interior Amenities. The interior storageand amenities include:■ Intermittent windshield wipers.■ Small storage compartment behind

TransmissionWith differential steering, the D8R II delivers the performance you expect from Caterpillar.

Differential Steering. Deliversuninterrupted power to both tracks tohelp maintain blade loads and reducecycle times.

Tiller. A single lever - or tiller - controlsmachine speed, direction and steering.The operator can steer and changedirections easily with one hand. Thetiller control allows the operator towork more precisely in close areas,around structures, obstacles, gradestakes, other machines or on finegrades.

Planetary Gear Sets. The differentialsteering system consists of threeplanetary gear sets; a dedicatedvariable-displacement hydraulic pump;a bi-directional, fixed-displacementsteering motor; and steering drive gears.A planetary differential turns themachine by speeding up one track andslowing the other, while maintainingfull power to both.

Efficient Hydraulic System. Devotes onepump solely to steering with a separatepump to power work tools. Adequatehydraulic power is available to steer andoperate work tools at the same time.

Maneuverability and Efficiency.Especially efficient in soft underfooting,where both tracks can power throughturns to keep loads moving andmaintain traction.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control(ECPC). A new feature on the D8R II isan Electronic Clutch Pressure Control inthe transmission which providessmoother shifting by modulatingindividual clutches precisely. ECPCalso provides auto shift and auto-kickdown features.

Auto Shift and Auto-kickdown. Autoshift allows the operator to pre-select aforward and reverse gear for directionalchanges. Auto shift settings include firstforward to second reverse, and secondforward to second reverse. Auto-kickdown allows the transmission to automatically downshift whensignificant load increases are detected.

Advanced Modular Cooling System (AMOCS)AMOCS utilizes an exclusive two pass cooling system and increased cooling surface area toprovide significantly more cooling capacity than conventional systems.

Separate Circuit Aftercooler. AMOCSfeatures a new Separate CircuitAftercooler and aftercooler water pump.

Two Pass Cooling System. Circulatescoolant from the sectioned bottom tankup through one side of the coolingelement and down through the otherside returning it to the bottom tank.

Modular Design. The cooling elementsare individual core modules that areconnected to a sectioned bottom tank.There is no top tank to remove.■ With 9 steel fins per 2.54 cm, or an

optional 6 steel fins per 2.54 cm.■ Brass tube construction within each

core for improved reliability.

Serviceability. Servicing of theAMOCS can be performed withouttilting the radiator guard.■ No need to remove or replace a major

component as on a single-coreradiator.

■ Each core module can be replacedindividually (without removing theentire radiator), saving considerablecost and repair time. It also features asite gauge for quick service checks.

Protection From Leaks. To reduce thepotential for coolant leaks, brass tubesare welded to a large, thick header,improving strength of the tube-to-header joint. The attachment sand blastgrid should be used to prevent coredamage in the conditions whereabrasive materials can be airborne.

Blades. The Universal (U) blade and theSemi-universal (SU) blade make fulluse of the D8R II power. The U bladehas increased capacity and less spillage.The SU blade is built for toughapplications in tightly packed materialwhere penetration is more importantthan capacity.

Universal (U) Blade. The U blade isefficient at moving big loads over longdistances. It's ideal for lighter orrelatively easily dozed material.

Semi-Universal (SU). Built for toughapplications in tightly packed materialwhere penetration is more importantthan capacity.

Dual Tilt. Dual tilt option can improveload control.■ Allows the operator to optimize the

blade pitch angle for each portion ofthe dozing cycle.

■ Faster tilting and greater tilt angle indual tilt mode.

■ Single tilt mode provides highestpryout force.

Single Lever Control. A single leverutilizing pilot hydraulics controls allblade movements, including theoptional dual tilt.

Cutting Edges. Cutting edges are DH-2steel. End bits are DH-3 to providemaximum service life in toughmaterials.

Tag Link. Tag link construction bringsthe blade closer to the machine for moreprecise dozing and load control. The taglink design provides solid lateralstability and better cylinder positionsfor constant pryout independent ofblade height.

Heel Clearance. Works well in hard-to-penetrate material because it has excellent heel clearance.

Ground Engaging Tools (GET). A largerange of Ground Engaging Tools isoffered.

Rippers. The D8R II is available witheither single or multi-shank ripper andfeatures a notched fuel tank for a bettervisibility to ripper tip.

Single-Shank Ripper. The best choice insevere applications where penetration isdifficult or when you need more lift.■ Operator can adjust the shank depth

from the seat using an optional singleshank pin puller.

■ Large ripper frame view holeimproves viewing of the ripper tip.

■ Narrow carriage body for improvedrear view.

■ Heat treated, cast spacer bars in rippercarriage to extend pocket life andreduce shank notching.

■ Large one-piece shank.■ Available in deep rip configuration.

Multi-Shank Ripper. Tailors the tractorto the material by using one, two orthree shanks.

Hydraulics. Adjusts attachmenthydraulic power to increase bothoperator and machine efficiency.

Load-Sensing Hydraulics. Load-sensinghydraulics utilize a feedback loop fromthe control valve to the hydraulic pumpto continually monitor the hydraulicpower requirements of the blade orripper.

Precise Power for Dozing or Ripping.During normal blade or rippercorrections, pump output increases anddecreases to provide precise power fordozing or ripping.

More Drawbar Power. Lower pumprequirements reduce engine powerrequirements for the hydraulics, makingmore drawbar power available forincreased machine production.

Variable-Flow Design. The D8R IIvariable-flow design minimizeshydraulic oil temperatures and saves onfuel.

Optional Ripper-Ready HydraulicSystem. An Optional feature on theD8R II is a ripper-ready hydraulicsystem with an additional valve, pilotcontrolled hydraulic lever, manifold,and the additional componentrynecessary to install a ripper. This makesit "ripper ready," improving versatilityand resale value.
