The Palm Sunday brunch is the largest single annual appeal for fi-nancial support to help sustain the operations of Catholic Social Ser-vices throughout western South Dakota. About $130,000 was raised through sponsorship and the free-will offering at the Brunch. Many of our clients are unable to pay for only a part of the costs of their services. In some cases they are unable to pay anything. Your donations place you next to our counselors and prevention special-ists as we serve the poor in our communities.

CSS HOLDS BOARD/DEPARTMENT HEADS RETREAT AT TERRA SANCTA RETREAT CENTER ON FEBRUARY 28

UPLIFTING PARENTS PROGRAM HELPING YOUNG FAMILIES

SUCCEED AND GROW

The Board of Directors and Department Heads held a day-long Planning Retreat in February. Some of the new 5-Year Goals included: Suicide Pre-vention, access to Child Care, use of Para Professionals to supplement staff, a review of services offered and communities served, expanding LCH into middle schools, employment of a grant writer, expansion of marketing ef-forts, Estate Gift marketing and the utilization of new technology to improve the delivery of services.

Joy is retir-ing next week from many years of services to those in need. Natalie Lecy is the Program Director at CSS.

Jim Kinyon, CSS Executive Director, set the stage for a discussion on reducing poverty in our community.

Stephanie Hurd, CSS President, lead the Retreat discussion and prioritiza-tion of goals identified. The Retreat began with Mass celebrated by Bishop Robert Gruss and ended with a Reception for participants and their spouses. The final 5-Year Goals, Fiscal 2016 Business Plan, Budget and Leadership assignments will be approved by the Board at their June 4th meeting.

Various events will take place throughout the month to bring awareness to the people living in Western South Dakota that there is help and there is hope. One of the highlighted activities during May is our Mental Health Awareness & Suicide Prevention Day to be held May 21, 2015, at the Main Street Square. This year’s theme is Healthy Minds, Healthy Families.

There are 11 nonprofit, 501(c)(3)mental health organizations; Black Hills Health Care System Department of Veteran Affairs, Catholic Social Services, Children’s Home, Community Health Center of the Black Hills, Front Porch Coalition, Lifeways, LSS, National Alliance on Mental Ill-ness, South Dakota National Guard, Behavior Management Systems, and Youth & Family Ser-vices joining their collective voices for mental wellness. The 211 Helpline, Children’s Home Society, the National Guard and NAMI Recovery Connections, will also join us in the May 21st ac-tivities.

This is the fourth Annual Mental Health Aware-ness & Suicide Prevention Day in Rapid City. The first year we had about 125 people attend, the sec-ond year closer to 250 and we continue to grow each year. This is a fun event to bring awareness to our community that 1 in 5 Americans has a di-agnosable mental health disorder that is treatable with the help of a mental health professional. Our goal is to breakdown the stigma associated with mental illness. We will have live music, a dance group, free food, mental health services informa-tion, and a balloon release. Guest speakers will share their personal stories of living with mental illness. A proclamation from the governor and mayor will also be read. Our balloon release finale is very popular. Many people write personal notes on the balloons; it is a very touching moment that ends the evening with hugs, smiles and tears.

We are going to continue into the evening this year with a family movie under the stars, Big Hero 6. The Rapid City Movies Under the Stars group is a new sponsor to our event. They are not hosting but are helping us obtain the movie. Manlove Psychi-atric Group is also a new sponsor helping to pay for the cost of the movie.
