New forklift order strengthens bond with ToyotaA leading timber and hardware supplier with a history going back over a century recently replenished more than half of its 40-strong all-Toyota fl eet of forklifts.

Bowens Timber and Hardware has ordered 24 new 8-Series 8FG 4-tonne and 2.5-tonne forklifts to replace existing Toyota forklifts that had reached the end of their rental term.

For the family-operated and privately owned business the decision to re-commit to Toyota forklifts was as much about the relationship with the brand as the quality and features of the equipment itself.

“Anyone can sell you a forklift; it’s what happens later that really matters,” said Mark Woollard, Bowens OHS group manager.

“Our experience with Toyota is that it makes quality, state of the art equipment, so in that sense it wasn’t a hard decision to make.

“We looked at a range of providers, from smaller ones to other big operators like Toyota, but it was Toyota Material Handling Australia’s (TMHA’s) willingness to show us what goes on behind the scenes that really

won us over,” Mark said.

“We were invited to TMHA’s Melbourne branch where we met the key back-up and service staff and managers, giving us an insight into the business and how things are done.”

Mark says that TMHA’s willingness to take Bowens behind the scenes and treat them as a partner was greatly appreciated.

“As a family-owned and operated business, building and maintaining lasting

relationships is really important to us. We were able to see that TMHA is growing and investing in new technicians to support the business, and that’s a positive for us, as Bowens is a business that is focused on continuous improvement,” he said.

Bowens also had specifi c requirements in relation to servicing and maintenance of the new forklifts, which TMHA was happy to accommodate.

“We had KPIs regarding service and response times, and arrangements for replacement items if major servicing is required. With a business like ours if an important piece of equipment like a forklift is

out of action for a period of time it can have a detrimental fl ow-on effect.

“TMHA was receptive to our needs and willing to meet these requirements,” Mark said.

TMHA Melbourne area sales manager Darren Smith said the arrangements with Bowens are a good example of the way in which TMHA can partner with its customers to meet their individual needs.

“We were only too happy to give Mark and the Bowens team an insight into our business and what we could offer them, and I’m pleased to see this long-term

relationship extend even further to the

benefi t of both parties,” Darren said.

Toyota’s 8-Series forklift range includes

safety features like Toyota’s exclusive

System of Active Stability, which helps

reduce the likelihood of roll-overs, and load-

sensing power steering that adjusts the

amount of power-steering fl uid according to

the load burden on the rear axle to reduce

energy loss.

Bowens’ origins go back to the late 19th

century, and it now operates 13 building and

hardware stores located throughout Victoria.

New Hilux: Tougher, more refined and more Australian than ever Toyota has released the toughest HiLux ever - a new-generation range that combines impressive global advances with extensive local development and evaluation designed to conquer the most severe operating conditions in Australia.Almost every aspect of the eighth-generation HiLux has been strengthened, including a thicker frame, stiffer body, new high-torque turbo-diesel engines, advanced six-speed transmissions, beefed-up suspension and brakes, and expanded off-road ability.

Towing capacity is now up to 3.5 tonnes* and payloads are up to 1240kg” with 23 of new

HiLux’s 31 variants confirmed as genuine one-tonners, including all 4x2 variants and all 4x4 single and extra cabs.

At the same time, the latest HiLux offers SUV-like features including a more compliant ride, quieter cabins and higher levels of comfort and convenience with standard air-conditioning, touch-screen display audios, cruise control,

more supportive seats and power-operated windows, mirrors and door locks.

New HiLux also has a distinctive Australian flavour with Toyota’s local engineers undertaking an unprecedented six-year program that delivered a new rugged suspension package, enhanced underbody protection, and electronic control systems

tuned for more effective operation on gravel and during off-road driving.

More than one million kilometres of testing, including 650,000km in Australia, has confirmed the performance, reliability and durability of new HiLux over the widest possible on-road, off-road and climatic conditions.

A new family of high-torque turbo-diesel engines is headed by a 2.8-litre version with maximum torque of up to 450Nm - a gain of 25 per cent compared with the previous 3.0-litre engine. Its 2.4-litre sibling also generates higher torque of up to 400Nm.

Toyota anticipates the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating across the range with a reversing camera on all pick-ups (accessory camera available on cab-chassis models),

seven airbags including driver’s knee protection, vehicle stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes with brake assist, and trailer sway control.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the new range is the total package - the toughest, most comfortable and most Australian HiLux ever.

“Australia’s favourite ute has taken the ‘unbreakable’ HiLux DNA to new heights due to Toyota’s global expertise in developing tough trucks and the extensive involvement since 2009 of our local engineers,” Mr Cramb said.

“As a result, new HiLux is remarkable for the way it inspires go-anywhere confidence, advances its role as a workhorse and is also fun to drive with SUV-like ride, handling,

comfort and convenience,” he said.

“It is ideally suited to Australian customers for

whom towing is part of their life, carrying a load

is vital for their job - and they love their bull

bars, winches and other accessories.”

Toyota’s expanded HiLux range includes more

double cabs, 4x4 and diesel choices plus the

introduction of three 4x2 Hi-Rider variants with

the ride-height and heavy-duty suspension of

4x4 vehicles. There are narrow and wide-body

versions as well as single, double and extra

cab styles - the latter now providing easy entry

to second-row seats by incorporating rear-

hinged access doors.

Hino helps towing giants hit 250 Hino is at the centre of a milestone in the relationship between Australian towing giants Ekebol and Nationwide Towing & Transport.

Tow truck manufacturer Ekebol has delivered a new Hino FE 1426 with six-tonne tilt tray body to Nationwide - the 250th vehicle the Queensland company has built for Nationwide since the beginning of their partnership in 1988.

The FE XL Air is also the 200th Hino purchased by Nationwide since becoming their brand of choice in 2005.

Nationwide began purchasing Hino trucks following success with their fi rst Hino tilt tray - a Ranger 6 - which was acquired in 2003.

The 500 Series FE 1426 is powered by the 6.4-litre J07E-TN fi ve-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 260HP (191kW) and 794Nm. It features advanced safety and comfort features, with ISRI air-suspended driver’s seat, ABS brakes, SRS driver’s airbag and ECE-R29 crash safety compliance.

CEO Rob Nicholls says Nationwide will continue to build its fl eet, which operates in Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Perth, with Hino because of their strong product and excellent service.

“Over the years we have found Hino to be very reliable, and the company to be professional and easy to deal with,” Mr Nicholls said.

“Our tow trucks work hard - 24 hours, seven days a week all over metropolitan areas, the countryside, on busy freeways and isolated outback roads.

“They also work on construction sites and at major events, including the Australian Grand Prix, the Australian Open and various concerts.

“Our customers include everyday motorists, major access equipment hirers and auto club members.”

Mr Nicholls added that Nationwide’s trucks tow very diverse loads, including cars, trucks, boats, buses, excavators, forklifts, containers, generators and portable buildings.

“A robust, durable and reliable truck and tray are critical - Hino and Ekebol clearly fulfi l these key criteria and have performed at very high levels for Nationwide over the long term.”

Mr Nicholls is also pleased with Nationwide’s long-lasting relationship with Ekebol.

“It’s great to have such a long and successful relationship with them, and I’m proud to be a part of this milestone,” he said.

Ekebol Managing Director Gary Roe said Hino trucks are a solid base for a reliable tow truck.

“The Hino Ranger 6 then FD models have

been great products to install our most popular TFS 4000 tilt tray body on, and you can see these in operation all around Australia.

“Now the FE model, with its increased capacity, has become very popular and is widely used for our TFS 6000 product.”

Mr Roe said Ekebol is proud to be supporting Nationwide’s growth across the country.

“Everyone at Ekebol values the long-term relationship that we have with Nationwide and we look forward to supporting them into the future,” he said.

“We pride ourselves on supporting our customers’ businesses with parts and excellent customer service, even for our earliest bodies still operating after nearly four decades.”

Ekebol has been designing and manufacturing towing equipment in Kunda Park, Queensland, for 37 years.

Nationwide has grown from its humble beginnings in 1987 as Blackburn Towing in Melbourne with four tow trucks. It is now the largest towing company in Australia.

Training provider tools up withToyota forklifts The ease of use of Toyota forklifts has led a warehousing and logistics training provider to purchase its fi rst Toyota forklift, with more Toyota and Raymond forklift equipment on order over the next few months.Sydney-based Tag Training recently took delivery of a Toyota 8FG 1.8-tonne counterbalance forklift to use in its warehousing and logistics training courses. It also has a Toyota 7FBE 1.5-tonne counterbalance forklift and a BT OSE250 electric pallet jack on long-term loan, with a Raymond 5200 order picker arriving shortly. The intention is for Tag Training to eventually run an all-Toyota fl eet nationwide.

Tag Training business manager Trent Ruddiman said the decision to change to Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) supplied equipment over the company’s previous brand was largely due to the ease of operation and his past experience with the product within the industry.

“I operated Toyota forklifts for many years when I worked in distribution centres and always found them to be very well built and reliable,” Trent said.

“In my current role as business manager of Tag Training I believe they’re the best machines for our clients to learn on: they’re much easier and more intuitive to use than most other brands I’ve come across.

“The safety features are also great for us, like the OPS (Operator Presence Sensing system)

that can sense if the operator isn’t in the usual travelling position and cuts off power,” Trent said.

Ease of use features on Toyota’s 8-Series forklifts include a height selector that simplifi es load handling operation, a shock sensor that detects and sends a warning of an imminent collision, and a PIN code entry system that prevents unauthorised people from operating the forklift.

“Another benefi t is that they’re widely used in the warehousing and logistics industry, so there’s an advantage in offering the Toyota brand for training purposes when there’s a good chance our clients will be using them in the workplace.”

Trent said that while the demands placed on the Toyota forklifts in the training environment are different to what they would be in the fi eld, the quality and durability of the Toyota forklifts is still a plus.

“The forklifts probably aren’t worked as hard as they might be on the job, but they are used consistently, and by inexperienced operators. We’ve found the Toyotas are by far the best ones for the job.”

TMHA area sales manager Corey Denford said the application of the Toyota forklifts in a

training environment was an example of the range of purposes the Toyota forklift equipment is suited to.

“It’s great to see Toyota forklifts delivering in the training environment, and it’s pleasing to hear that the simplicity of layout and ease of operation is a big plus for those learning how to operate the equipment.

“We look forward to enjoying a long relationship with Tag Training and taking care of their material handling equipment needs for many years to come,” Corey said.

Since 2009 Tag Training has offered a wide range of industry-specifi c training courses at its purpose-built training facilities at St Marys in Sydney’s west and in south-east Brisbane. It also conducts on-site training for clients at their own premises.

“We offer comprehensive and practical training packages and cover all facets of supply chain management, ensuring we use up to date equipment and technology for warehouse operations, driving operations, licensing and preparation for industry employment,” Trent said.

“We strive to deliver confi dence, not just competence, through practical solutions and practical training.”

Toyota forklifts part of the furniture at UnitransThe distribution centre servicing some of Australia’s best known retail furniture brands has increased its all-Toyota Material Handling forklift fl eet with the delivery of 21 order pickers and seven reach forklifts at its busy warehouse in western Sydney.

Unitrans Asia Pacifi c is part of the Steinhoff Asia Pacifi c group and specialises in the warehousing and distribution of all bulky goods. It took delivery of its latest batch of Toyota Material Handlingequipment at its 50,000m2 distribution centre in Kings Park, NSW, at the end of May.

The reach forklifts and order pickers joined a 50-strong all-Toyota fl eet that also includes Toyota Material Handling turret trucks and counterbalance forklifts.

Unitrans Asia Pacifi c has been a Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) customer for over 10 years and is in the process of upgrading to a 100 per cent TMHA fl eet at all its warehouses across Australia.

Unitrans Asia Pacifi c distribution centre manager Zanko Kotevski said the ease of use of the TMHA equipment is a big plus in the busy warehouse that handles both domestic distribution and overseas exports.

“We’ve always found Toyota equipment to be the easiest to use,” Mr Kotevski said. “The order picker and reach forklifts in particular are lighter and more agile than similar equipment from other brands, making them much easier to manoeuver in the confi nes of the warehouse.”

The safety features offered on the Toyota equipment are also an important consideration for Unitrans.

“We appreciate the standard safety features on offer, like the auto slow-down function on our high reach forklifts that slows them down to 2km/h when travelling with a load at height ensuring operator safety,” Mr Kotevski said.

“Toyota is also able to add the specifi c safety features we need. For example half of the

new batch of forklifts have been specially fi tted with weight scales so that if the forks are overloaded a fl ashing light and siren warns the driver, and the machine cuts out.”

TMHA corporate account customer manager Mike Andress said these safety modifi cations are just one example of the way Toyota ensure its forklifts, reach trucks and other warehouse equipment meets each of its customers’ specifi c needs.

“TMHA’s forklifts and other warehouse equipment feature industry-leading safety and comfort features as standard, but we are always willing and able to listen to the needs of our customers and make sure their TMHA equipment is set up to suit their individual requirements,” Mr Andress said.

“This holistic approach extends well beyond the initial sale. For example, we have a full-time Toyota mechanic on site at Unitrans with his own workshop, so regular servicing and maintenance is taken care of quickly and effi ciently.”

Having a mechanic based on site also has advantages in the event of breakdowns.

“We really appreciate the convenience of having the mechanic here and the quick turnaround it provides if a machine breaks down,” Mr Kotevski said. “With a busy warehouse like ours it’s important for us to keep downtime to the absolute minimum.”

Unitrans introduced Toyota Raymond swing reach forklifts to its Kings Park warehouse in 2005, enabling it to adopt a narrow aisle confi guration and increase storage capacity by over 30 per cent.

and deceleration.

Automatic High Beam* (already standard on Cruiser) detects the headlights of oncoming vehicles and the taillights of preceding vehicles, switching automatically between high and low beam to avoid dazzling other drivers. More frequent use of high beam helps with earlier detection of pedestrians and obstacles.

Lane Departure Alert* (already standard on Cruiser) is designed to help avoid collisions by warning the driver if the vehicle starts to deviate from the lane without the indicators having been engaged.

Cruiser variants will continue to be fitted with Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. They gain front parking sensors, which is also part of the safety option pack on GXL.

RAV4 is offered with three four-cylinder engines, starting with a 107kW 2.0-litre petrol for the two-wheel drive (2WD) variants.

All-wheel drive (AWD) versions can be specified with a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine that develops 340Nm of torque, or a 2.5-litre petrol engine that develops 132kW.

The 2WD RAV4 is fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox or Toyota’s Multidrive S automatic transmission that also provides a sporty, sequential seven-speed mode. Petrol AWD variants are fitted with a six-

speed multi-mode sequential-shift automatic while diesel AWD RAV4 offers the choice of the six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes.

RAV4 features Toyota’s advanced all-wheel drive technology, Dynamic Torque Control AWD. It uses information from speed, steering-angle and yaw-rate sensors to control torque transfer between the front and rear wheels.

Newly developed safety technologies that can prevent or mitigate the force of a collision - including autonomous braking - will be standard on high-grade Cruiser variants and optional on mid-range GXL.

Every RAV4 will gain trailer sway control*, which is designed to assist if a towed vehicle becomes unsettled by crosswinds, bumpy roads or sharp turns of the steering wheel.

The extensive list of updates - announced at the Frankfurt Motor Show - includes more dynamic exterior styling, enhanced interior sensory quality and functionality, and engines that comply with Euro 5 emissions standards.

Revised models feature a significantly larger lower grille, new LED headlamps that

incorporate daytime running lights, a more prominent rear bumper and restyled LED taillights.

Interior updates include redesigned instrument clusters with GXL and Cruiser variants fitted with twin dials separated by a 4.2-inch colour TFT (thin-film transistor) multi-information display.

Ride comfort and driver involvement have been improved with measures including a more rigid rear body shell that contributes to greater driving stability and improved ride quality.

Shock absorbers and coil springs have been revised to give a flatter, more comfortable ride and to enhance straight-line stability.

RAV4’s cabin is quieter for greater occupant comfort and ease of conversation due to expanded insulation coverage and thickness to reduce road, tyre and exhaust noise.

The newly developed active safety measures adopted for RAV4 use a forward-facing camera and millimetre-wave radar.

A Pre-Collision Safety System* can warn the driver of a possible crash and automatically apply the brakes. Automated braking can reduce vehicle speed by approximately 30km/h.

Active Cruise Control* helps the driver keep a safe distance from the car in front. It also monitors vehicles merging into or out of the lane ahead to support smooth acceleration

Toyota RAV4 adds safety, prestige and comfort Toyota’s popular RAV4 will be updated in December with advanced safety features, premium styling, sharper driving dynamics and a quieter ride.

Toyota Huski helps expand arborist businessA progressive arborist and fi rewood business has commissioned a new Toyota Huski skid-steer loader to help grow the business and increase safety.Above The Rest Tree Care, based at Conjola on the New South Wales south coast, commissioned the Toyota Huski 5SDK8 earlier this year.

Company principal Jesse Chinnock said it is the company’s fi rst skid-steer loader.

“We’ve been in operation for six years now and the time was right to add a skid-steer loader, both to progress the business and for added health and safety benefi ts – by using the Huski to lift heavy items,” he said.

Mark Elvins, area sales manager from the Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) Queanbeyan branch, sold and delivered the Toyota Huski skid-steer loader.

“I had plenty of experience with Toyota Huskis through the business where I used to work and colleagues who have had four to fi ve thousand hours of service from them,” Mr Chinnock said.

“They are reliable and robust machines, and they’re well priced for what you get.

“Mark Elvins fi rst visited me three years ago to ask about adding a Toyota Huski skid steer loader to the fl eet, and he has been terrifi c in his back-up and support. He’s always happy to do things to help out,” he said.

“I have bought a variety of equipment in the last six years and have had some unsatisfactory experiences with companies that forget you after you’ve made the purchase.”

Mr Chinnock said the fi rst service on the Toyota Huski was a good example of Toyota’s different approach.

“I realised I had missed the scheduled service mark by 10 hours, so I rang Mark at TMHA. It was already mid-afternoon, but he contacted a service technician who was in Nowra that day and he drove 45 minutes to see us.

“By then it was late in the day, but the technician did the service and gave me some extra tips on how to look after the loader,” he said.

“I was amazed by the promptness and quality of service,” Mr Chinnock said.
