I HIT HAPPY HOUR AT Eat the Rich

after 11 p.m. $1 oysters and a

cheap Natty Bo and Old

Overholt shot do the job.

etrbar.com

A LOCAL RESTAURANT TOTALLY

WORTH THE BUZZ IS The Red Hen.

The food is excellent and

unfussy, and the wine list is

expertly curated. theredhendc

I’D BEAR A BRAIN FREEZE FOR a

milk shake from Trickling

Springs Creamery in Union

Market. Their shakes are

seriously thick, and seriously

good. tricklingspringscreamery

I ESCAPE SUMMER RAINSTORMS AT

Showtime Lounge. This

former barbershop-turned-

bar feels like it’s been there

for 50 years. It reminds me

of New Orleans dives, which

makes me think of sweating

over a cool drink. 113 Rhode

Island Ave NW.

I’M DAY-TRIPPING TO Topping,

Virginia, to visit Merroir.

It’s a restaurant on the

Rappahannock River Oyster

Company’s farm, overlooking

the mouth of the Rappahan-

nock. rroysters.com

FOR THE PERFECT SUNDAY DRIVE GO

west. Head out to the Virginia

Blue Ridge, or up into the

panhandle of Maryland.

THE BEST PLACE TO SOAK IN THE SUN

IS an urban beer garden. Get

to either Dacha in Shaw or

Garden District (gardendistrict

dc.com) at 4 or 5 p.m. to beat

the rush, drink some German

beers, people watch, and get

a bit of late-afternoon sun.

I’D CATCH THE SUNSET AT The

National Mall. Sitting there,

watching the sun go down

behind the Lincoln Memorial,

is quietly spectacular.

I SCOUR THE FARM STANDS AT

Bloomingdale Farmer’s

Market. It’s not huge, but it

has great, honest producers

from around the region.

I’M DRINKING like it’s my job.

More to the point, I’m

drinking anything that

2 Birds 1 Stone’s Adam

Bernbach makes, because

the drinks he creates are

infuriatingly great. 2birds

I’M PICNICKING AT Rock Creek

Park. It’s a little slice of the

countryside in the middle of

the District.
